What constitutes selling out is a very tough call. A lot of underground bands may think signing to a major label is selling out, however signing to a major label may insure that a band gets to do what they want for a living. Then there's other produced bands that are featured in all the commercials. They're not really selling out because it fits with what they do, so I guess you could say that they already sold out, although they probably never were anything else so what did they sell out from? In the case of U2 promoting the iPod and iTunes, I think that was a good move and not selling out. Promoting iTunes is a very responsible way to keep he music industry alive, because trying to ignore downloading is just silly.

What are you listening to?

Do You Feel Loved - U2 Because U2 are awesome and Pop is a really good album. -
I completely agree that the US is better than a dictatorship. In many ways it is far ahead of a country like Syria or Saudi Arabia. I just think it's a little unfair to say that those countries should have no say in the UN. And with the points presented earlier, the US is not so innocent. Especially in the last couple decades.

Did Saved By The Bell Run In Canada?
pearanoid replied to jmp's topic in Rentals, Television, and Readables
My favorite thing about it was that Zack would do something really crazy, like steal the Principal's car to impress a girl, and he'd get caught, but instead of getting in trouble, Mr. Belding would say "Let's get even." Then he'd do some equally crazy and unrealistic thing to teach Zack a lesson. A lesson that we could all share in. Good stuff. -
I'm glad this is still a peaceful respectful debate. Nice work all! And with regards to being a conspiracy theorist, I'm not. The tin foil hat is just a new fashion trend I'm starting. The fact that it stops them from reading my mind is just an added bonus. Really. My dog has one too.

The US oppresses, they're just sneakier about it. (ie. FOX News and such). True, the US had freedom of speech, as long as it doesn't go against go against the current administration. Free press, not really, although they like to make us think that. Women's rights, okay, I'll agree with that, Saudi Arabia sucks there. Free elections? Yeah, okay sure, I think that that may still be up in the air too. Remember 2000? I guess I just disagree with how you see the US.

This Is What John Kerry Did A Few Days Ago

Since I don't watch FOX News, I don't really know what the actual definition of "flip-flop" is. But Bush sure looks like he flip-flopped! -
Yeah, it's all really sensationalized, but I think the important thing is to just ignore all the glory of it and realize how much people lost and how we're lucky to have what we have. And donate some money. Anything at all. Do that instead of buying a CD or something.

I think the better thing to do is to vote for the person you want representing your riding instead of voting for the party who's leader you want to be PM. I think it's a better way to think about politics. If you know the person representing you is actually representing your views and values, then you have a person clsoe that will fight for those things on the larger scale. Does that make sense?

I think if every country was more concerned with Humanitarian Aid and not "security issues", we'd all be better off. If anything, the US should be kicked out of the UN. A huge part of the reason the US has to worry about security issues is due to their actions in the past and present. They're currently creating a whole new generation of security concerns. And comparing Syria and Saudi Arabia to the US in a weak argument. If Syria and Saudi Arabia shouldn't be allowed to have a say because of their actions, that the US sure as shit shouldn't have a say because their actions are just as bad. Okay, go ahead, start attacking this comment now.

"Popular Mechanics for Kids". A Canadian kids show that Elisha Cuthbert co-hosted a few years back.

Once again, a documentary does not have to show both sides. It only has to show what it wants to serve it's purpose.
-
I also agree that even if you don't walk out of the theatre believing everything you just saw, if it gets you talking to people about, then it's served its purpose. But I'm really tired of people criticizing Michael Moore by saying his film is "one-sided". It's a Documentary! It's supposed to be one-sided! It's created to get his point across! If you want an objective point of view, you're supposed to be able to watch the news, although even that's not true anymore.

Movies That Made You Cry
pearanoid replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Rentals, Television, and Readables
I cried during Old School, but not because Blue died, just because the movie was too damn funny. -
I find that genres don't really apply to the music I listen to. Or maybe I'm realizing that genres just don't work because they're too general. Best bands/Artists: Death Cab For Cutie Thursday Sigur Ros The Shins Matthew Good Yeah Yeah Yeahs Ben Folds U2 Deftones And that's all I can think of for now.

Higher Ground was a Vancouver shot drama that is a few years old. Matt's song is probably in it since it's a Vancouver show. It's probably on reruns somewhere, and you might recognize a young Anakin Skywalker in his first role.

This Is What John Kerry Did A Few Days Ago
pearanoid replied to no yu begin wher i end's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
Of course my opinion is based on what I watch. That's a good way to get information. But it's also combined with what I read. And I'm not a person to just believe everything I hear, I'm going to think about it and then decide. And you're right, Canada is pretty leftist and I'm glad for that. I think a leftist attitude puts people first and points the way to a much more accepting society. I don't know a lot about John Kerry, but I do know that Bush stands for a lot of stuff that I do not believe in. That's why I would prefer Kerry. And I don't mean to judge you in any way, I don't even know you. Please realize I'm keeping this a friendly debate and I do respect what you have to say. -
This thread is already too long but I just wanted to mention that I actually went to the protest. It was nice and respectful and everyone was just there to bring attention for what they believe in. No one was trying to force the people around them to sign up or get in anyone's way, they were just there to spread the message to whoever wanted to stop to listen. I also had the chance to talk with Jennifer for a while. Since this thread started with a criticism of her, I just wanted to say that she is a very nice and friendly person and I enjoyed talking with her. That's all I need to say.

CNN, a left wing station? Nope, that just doesn't sound right. And I'd like to add that I'm glad I live in Canada. -
I believe it was in the Season Finale of Season 2. And yeah, it just played a bit in the BG. Not really worth watching the Ep just for the song. And I only know this because I've worked on the show, I DO NOT watch Smallville.
