  1. I don't think I've ever seen a thread here about Pavement or Stephen Malkmus. Pavement are probably the best indie rock band of the 90s as they with Sebadoh (well, Lou Barlow from Dinosaur Jr) really kick-started the whole lo-fi style in the early 90s. Without Pavement, there would be no Beck or Neutral Milk Hotel. Slanted And Enchanted is the perfect example of their lo-fi sound but I think for sure that their 94 album Crooked Teeth, Crooked Teeth was easily their best album and one of the best albums of the 90s. These days, they're turned into a really melodic band and now share some alt-country roots (thanks to Guided By Voices) on top of their layered and wacky experimental sound (borrowed from Sonic Youth). Any fans? EDIT: these days of course meaning the later years as they haven't recorded an album together this decade.
  2. They're seriously one of the worst bands out there. That techno/rap/punk shit does not work together and their songs are just fucking stupid. Their fanbase is embarrassing too--you don't want to see them in concert. They're a kids band like MCR or Billy Talent.
  3. Muchmusic is your perfect definition of Top 40 music. Looking at their playlist, I guess the Chili Peppers are the best top 40 band right now. Incubus also made it into the top 40 (tv & radio) many times so I won't count them out. BUT a lot of bands make it into the top 40 so it doesn't mean that they're a top 40 band. For example, Green Day have had more top 40 hits than most bands these days but I wouldn't call them a top 40 band.
  4. An underrated vocalist is Todd Lewis of the Burden Brothers (formerly from Toadies).
  5. Not that I like Matt Mays, but does music ALWAYS have to be complex for you for it to be good?
  6. i saw them the next night with about 100 people. kicked ass. Respect.
  7. We can only hope.
  8. I hate people who only listen to something because it's "influencial". As much as the Foo Fighters suck right now, they would be a hell lot more entertaining (in a non-acoustic set) to see in concert over Bob Dylan.
  9. *waits for cringleman to write an essay--one that's going to kick everyones' asses*
  10. He's destroyed so many bands.
  11. Yes, Make A Move wasn't a very good song.
  12. gish isn't artistic? i'm not following you here. then change artistic to experimental... but gish did have its on sound back in 1991 (in my opinion, the far superior "noisy record" over My Bloody Valentine's Loveness). Either way, I find the later albums to have more depth and all the songs on Gish, with the exception of Daydream, flow the same. Still a fabulous record.
  13. The only problem on I/O is that the drumming can become very irritating and monotonous. It's still a great record but I still feel that Bellaclava was their best record as the instrumentation on that record was superior to anything off I/O.
  14. Gish is a great, great record but I much prefer the later, artistic albums of the Smashing Pumpkins like Adore and Machina--excellent underrated albums.
  15. I think part of the reason why Carmelina had the amount of success it did was because of how far out the video was. It definitly got me hooked on the song and on MGB (AoB was the first MGB album I bought). I also think that Carmelina fits the mood of AoB far better than Pony Boy. AoB is a record whose songs more often than not lean towards extremes, extremely tender (Advertising on Police Cars, Sort of a Protest Song) to extremely hard and rough (Carmelina, Fall of Man), with a bit of middle ground (Workers Sing A Song of Mass Production, Under the Influence). Pony Boy isn't as hard or dark (musically) as Carmelina, and thus wouldn't fit the mood of the album. Carmelina also provides a fine contrast to Tripoli. It's hard, heavy, pounding, and screeching; and Tripoli is soft, mournful, and just beautiful. Pony Boy wouldn't provide this contrast and would diminish the feel of the record, as it moves from one extreme to the other suddenly. You don't think Anti-Pop changes the mood of the cd? Also, to add something for everyone else. I never said that Pony Boy is the "better" song so I really don't see any Carmelina hating here. I just think that Pony Boy has "accessible radio single" written all over it while Carmelina definitely did not.
  16. I'm assuming you haven't heard Murray Street? Murray Street is great but it's way, way too damn short. Karen Revisited is excellent though but the rest of the album isn't even freaking close to Daydream Nation.
  17. $35-40 isn't ridiculous for me.
  18. Yes! (lousy 8 character limit thing)
  19. Everytime I see the word "balalaika", I think of the band Ozma. Yes, I know I'm the only one. Looking forward to the album.
  20. Name a band that has one album that is easily, easily sticks out as their best album--it's not even funny nor worth comparing to their other albums. I have to go with Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation". The other albums ARE great but this was in a different territory in terms of music.
  21. So I was listening to Pony Boy today and I thought to myself, why the hell wasn't this the lead single for the Audio Of Being. It's hard for me to decide which song I enjoy more (Pony Boy or Carmelina) but Pony Boy is a FAR more melodic song. It has some of the catchiest and easy-to-sing along lyrics in Matthew Good's whole discography. Sure, Pony Boy wouldn't have been a hit single but it would have easily been more popular than Carmelina (which was probably too heavy for the casual fans who really digged Hello Time Bomb/Load Me Up). Lyrically, I don't think people could have "related" to Carmelina and the video was so in left field that I'm surprised it even got the seldom rotation that it received. Overall, Carmelina should be replaced by Pony Boy as track 2 on the Audio Of Being. What about All Together? I don't know, this isn't a part of the discussion!
