Mentioned in the other thread I got Smashing Pumpkins tickets for August 1st....and today I got Radiohead tickets for July 11th! Never seen Radiohead live...!

Saw them in 2008 around the Zeitgeist era. They were great. Jimmy was still the drummer at the time. He's gotta be one of the best drummers on the planet. I was able to get two tickets for this reunion tour at Madison Square Garden on August 1st. Me and my brother are very excited. He's 8 years older than me and grew up on the Pumpkins, and he got me into them many years ago. Sucks about D'arcy but she's had a tough life and her absence shouldn't stop them from doing this tour with Jimmy and James.

What's wrong with lyric videos? Just something interesting to look at on Youtube rather than a static image.

What an idiot. I don't think there's really any defense for what he did. Looked pretty intentional. I'm not a fan of QOTSA so I can't comment on separating that action from the music. I've separated Matt Good from the music at times because he says/does things sometimes that make me scratch my head. I separate Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins because they're one of my favorite bands but he's kind of an asshole/nut a lot. I mentioned in the Upcoming Concerts thread that the Pinegrove show I was supposed to attend last Wednesday was cancelled because the lead singer announced in a long letter on Facebook that he was accused of "sexual coercion" and going to start therapy. I read the letter and it was really strange. It didn't sound like anything that was...that bad...but it was hard to know because it was vague. I haven't listened to Pinegrove since then but I will probably go back to them at some point. I personally just don't care that much about his transgressions, whatever they were. As mentioned earlier, if there were a situation like "Lost Prophets" I would swear off that band entirely. It's all got to be based on context and your own feelings I guess. Case by case basis. But I do think it is important to consider separating art from artist in general. I still like Kevin Spacey movies.

Anyway so I didn't get to see Pinegrove this week as planned, but I do want to mention another concert I went to last Saturday. So it's not "upcoming" but I'd like to mention it in case anybody finds this worth checking out on spotify or whatever. I saw Christopher O'Riley for the first time. I've been a fan for many years. He is a classically trained pianist that covers Radiohead, Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, Tori Amos, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Guided by Voices, the list goes on. He plays a lot of classical music too but he has several cover albums of his own arrangements of contemporary music...basically stuff that he likes. The show was in a little concert hall just north of NYC. There were mostly older people there that didn't know his work necessarily, but as I said I've been a fan since freshman year of college so 14 years. He was great. After the show I asked a question during Q&A (and part of his answer involved the plot to the Raisins episode of South Park)...and after the Q&A he went out to the merch table where he signed several items for me, including a CD I bought 14 years ago. And we talked a bit and he was just an incredible guy. I would just like to recommend that you guys check him out. I downloaded the newest Foo Fighters album (after skipping the one before that) and I have to say I really like it. It has some cool classic rock vibes throughout.

For me the emotional reactions come from songs that represent a time or moment in my life. I've always been someone that likes to take walks. I walk everywhere, and especially living in New York City I walk because I don't own a car. And when I'm walking I almost always have headphones on. Doing this has always just deepened my personal connection to music. It's like an old friend that is always by my side. And in that way Matt Good's music has been traveling and walking with me for years. And there have been certain moments/periods of time where songs like Non Populus or She's In It For The Money or Last Parade or Fearless or It's Been A While Since I Was Your Man ... were on repeat and became important to me and had a special impact on me at the time. And when I listen to them I still think back to those moments. Dunno that I can pick favorites honestly.

I regret not seeing more full band shows. I probably had the resources to see the Vancouver, LOES, or Arrows tours but I just didn't make it happen. Prior to 2007 I would say it would have been difficult for me to have traveled to Canada since I was in my early 20's and wouldn't have known what I was doing. But yeah I wish I would have seen some of those late 2000's, early 2010's tours. The first time I did see him though I flew to Buffalo by myself in October 2007 for the Club Infinity solo acoustic show. It's still probably the best show I've ever seen, just because of how different of a thing it was for me to do to fly somewhere alone when I was 22, and because of what the show itself and the music meant to me. I slept overnight at the airport and went home the next day. Got delayed and ended up in 2 different cities before getting home to NY about 8 hours later than scheduled. Wouldn't have changed anything about that weekend.

Ugh. That was literally 2 days after my mom passed away. I was 17 at the time. At that age I had no concept of when things came out but I remember getting Avalanche somehow by April or May and listening to it a ton that spring and summer. That album along with a bunch of others helped me through tough times.

I definitely associate certain bands or albums with seasons. I don't associate Matt Good with any particular time of year though. Actually there was one summer when I was 14 or 15 years old where I spun Beautiful Midnight cd CONSTANTLY so I kinda associate that album with summer I guess. But in general MG is not an artist I associate with seasons. I do associate Ryan Adams with fall. It's like as soon as the weather cools off his music just fuckin strikes a chord with me like no other time. Probabably cause I played the shit out of Heartbreaker after a girl dumped me in October 2007. I also associate Jar of Flies by Alice in Chains with fall, just because of having tended to listen to it in the month of November. I don't know where I'm going with this post. hah.

Aight. Just kinda surprised because it was one of the songs that I had an immediate positive reaction to upon first listen. Earlier I was talking about album rankings. I don't think it's fair to hold up every new album to the classics. I just think overall there's something missing with SLAS. I think someone mentioned earlier they were waiting for a peak moment that didn't seem to come. I've still enjoyed it though. Also in general with Matt's albums I've gotten the concept every time up until the last two albums. Chaotic Neutral had a lot of very good songs on it, including one of my favorites ever by Matt (Cold Water), but the album doesn't seem to flow as well as Arrows or Lights or Hospital Music, etc. You can argue that that's the concept of CN lol, but I'm not sure. In the same way I'm having trouble getting the concept of SLAS as a whole. On the 3 albums I mentioned specifically each song sounds like a natural progression of the song before it and on CN and SLAS I don't get that feeling.

I've noticed that he never does a full summer tour, or even a spring tour. His tours have always tended to land in fall/winter, which is tough for traveling with the weather especially from the US. But I would also understand he probably likes to have summers off, save for a few one off shows.

Having listened to SLAS a few more times I will say the fade outs don't bother me. The length doesn't bother me. I like the album as a whole, but I dunno, I just probably wouldn't rank it above most of his other solo albums. I guess I'm a little salty nothing from the original SLAS demo made the cut because I loved that SO much. Still happy to have the album of course, but unfortunately due to ECONOMICS I don't think I'll be able to get up to Canada for a show on this tour. I have to plan my honeymoon and I have to save up $$$ and time off for 3 friends' weddings next summer.

I finally got to listen to the whole album tonight for the first time. I mentioned it before, but I got married on the 20th and then immediately left town for a few days, so I wasn't really able to get alone with the album. I previously only heard Bad Guys Win and Decades. Having heard the whole thing, I have to reserve judgment until a few more full listens. I will say "She's Got You Where She Wants You" is the song that I immediately went back to replay after the album ended. Instant classic. Also really liked Men at the Door and Something Like A Storm (even though it didn't resemble the demo at all). Days Come Down was definitely the weakest track on the first listen. I know the album is short but that doesn't necessarily bother me. I think many shorter, more concise albums are better than some needlessly long albums, in general.

That video is a trip. I first became a fan of Matt Good around the time of the disbanding of MGB. I was a teen and developing my initial Internet footprint. I was a member of some message board and on that board was a Canadian guy from BC. He turned me onto MGB and after some initial hesitation I became hooked quickly. I would assume most fans outside of Canada found him somehow on the Internet, like me. The first songs I really dug into were Hello Time Bomb, Strange Days, Fearless, and Euphony. By the time I became more than a casual fan of the band, Audio of Being had either just come out or had already been out for a little while. But the first MG album I anticipated the release of was Avalanche, so that's really where I started following his career in earnest. First saw him live in 2007 at Club Infinity outside Buffalo (10 year anniversary of that acoustic show just passed last week), and by that time his look was vastly different than the video above. So the long-haired young version of Matt Good is like a foreign concept to me. I'm more used to him having short hair and looking older and wiser.

Pre-ordered my vinyl shortly after I saw the Facebook post. I haven't downloaded the 3 advance tracks yet because I kinda don't wanna listen too much and spoil the newness of the album in general. Was surprised when I read that nothing from the original Something Like A Storm demo is actually included in the newly recorded title track. That seems kind of weird, that he would completely change the song and keep the name. But hey, he's the artist, he can take the music in any direction he chooses. Hoping that this time around the vinyl doesn't take like 4 additional months to ship. Very excited as always for a new Matt Good album!

Bummed that Something Like A Storm (song) was cut down so much. There were a lot of good riffs in the original demo. I still listen to it all the time. Also bummed that Bad Pennies was not on the table for the album :( Also if October 20 is indeed the release date....that's the date of my wedding. Guess I'll have to wait until after the mini-honeymoon to hear it. However if I buy the vinyl like I did for Chaotic Neutral, and it takes like 4 months to get to me, like the last time, well then maybe I won't hear it til 2018 :lol:

Totally agree the albums themselves are surprisingly pretty shitty, but the Audiotree Live performance is actually luckily the first thing I heard by them. My friend linked me to it. When you compare that live performance to the studio albums it's like night and day. Very weird how all that energy didn't translate in the studio. But yeah, Pinegrove on Audiotree Live is one of the best performances I've ever heard. I listen to it all the time. PS My favorite song in that Audiotree performance is Size of the Moon.

Hmm, I haven't gotten a country vibe from Pinegrove's vocals. I'm a relatively new fan but they strike me as an evolution of some of the emo rock that I mostly ignored in the mid 2000s. But for some reason when I heard them for the first time earlier this year, and even though I'm now in my 30s now, their music has just kinda struck a chord with me. I like their lyrics and the stories they tell, and just the sound and tone reminds me of when I was a bit younger...I like that.
