Dave Genn Youtube Interview on Producing and MGB
andydanger85 replied to daniel_v's topic in Matthew Good
I think that it's entirely possible that a person can make an intellectually honest observation about a mistake, and also still be uncomfortable about other things that may have happened. I was careful to note while watching that he never directly refers to Matt or presumes that the audience knows that he was in that band, just that one time he was in a "band called the Matthew Good Band" in the abstract, as if he just told you he had eggs for breakfast or that he just took a dump. Matt has said on various occasions (in addition to the bit that people all wanted to get "theirs" on the record) to the effect that none of them were ever really the greatest of friends from a start and something to the effect of there was a time that "if [Matt] died right then, they wouldn't have shed a tear." I think the problems were both personal and band politics; Dave may be able to admit he had a big ego music wise, but the fact that he was weird at Geoff's memorial I think still fits. Definitely an interesting talk though! He seems to be a little bit more level headed than I remember him being back in the day... -
So, um, Matt just posted mockups of new MG(B)FC merch on his instagram. I'm pretty sure my head just exploded.

He had a stroke recently. I wonder how he's doing, come to think of it.

Favorite tracks on Chaotic Neutral?

For me, it's because the song is relatively linear in it's construction ...and because it's repetitive at times. The message, lyrics, music are all good...it just doesn't go in directions that excite me as much as the rest of the album. -
Hmm, reading more about it, the person in question may be selling it for that price for the very reason you're concerned. I hadn't heard this about the Uncharted models ... If you're considering buying a console and were already prepared to spend $200, perhaps just wait for the standard editions to come down OR invest in a PS4 Pro, which is a good investment from a start. More money, better investment.

Merry Christmas to all!

So, picking up this conversation according to the premise the OP set out... I was listening to the Matthew Good Apple Music Channel ...and one of the similar/recommended songs was "Into Fire" by Jay Malinowski. Usually these algorithm dealies don't work the best ...but this song definitely has some Suburbia/ballads from 1999-2001 era MG vibe going on, especially the percussion. Don't get me wrong, he doesn't sound like Matt ...but the song kind of makes me feel the same, if that makes the sense? I know nothing else about him...but a few promising tunes, anyways. EDIT*: Upon googling the man, he is the dude from Bedouin Soundclash. I haven't thought about that band in what seems like a decade...

He's spoken about his favourite artists in different instances before ... Talk Talk, Afghan Whigs, Billy Bragg, Jeff Tweedy and Wilco, Miles Davis, he's spoken about growing up with Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan ... he did a curated video playlist and the bands included Pulp, Sloan, Radiohead, Kate Bush ...he is a fan of Led Zep "used to play Led Zeppelin IV" in It's Been A While ... and the whole concept of WLRRR was getting back to what he considered to be a high water mark in music production - the mid to late 70's ... he says the greatest moment of his career was opening for The Who, for which Ex-Pats .... is a direct homage to ... Something Like A Storm was representative of his love for Explosions .... EDIT* Thought of a few more ... Daniel Johnston, Nick Cave and Tom Waits he has also spoken highly of to my recollection...especially DJ

It's a popular song, but I think "Halleluljah" by Leonard Cohen (Jeff Buckley version) would sound haunting done with Matt's voice. Also, Ohio by Neil Young

He is fantastic. When I went to see OLP this past fall, I spent most of my time staring at him. Amazing performer! At one of the Massey Hall MG shows I went to during the Nothing to Hide Tour, Duncan was on the soundboard and Matt did a little shout out to him part way through. He was recording it for a possible (?) live release ...I wonder what ever happened to that recording, because that show was epic. Yes, I remember them saying this at TURF as well.
-
Anything Simon and Garfunkel .... Bob Dylan ... I remember on the Behind the Scenes videos for the IAWCC video, he plays a Bob Dylan song (or part of it) and it's fantastic...
-
Since we're all pretty unsure at this point ... wild card prediction ... Ryan Dahle??? They're buddies and Ryan plays like every instrument ... Another wild-card prediction....Matt is friends with Duncan Coutts of OLP ...OLP just finished their tour ...

Haha, too funny. I'm the guy that responded to your comment on the event page. I am also going to the Hamilton show! Welcome!

Haha. My dad spent part of his childhood there, as did my aunt and uncles and grandparents. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard Matt was from there. I agree with regards to Let's Get It On completely. With regards to his voice, he has said elsewhere on here that he has noticed his voice deepening and changing with age. In fact, it's pretty common for male singers. You may be on to something when you talk about him being sick though, as he was recording this the same week/period he did TURF and he was very sick when he played the show. I noticed on social media he went back up to the studio after the show. At the same time, I think the vocals on the recording are fantastic. He goes for the high notes a lot more than he has been doing the last few years ... I think some of the lower deliveries may have been artistic choices.

I'll third that sentiment.

So, I have listened to all of the songs now... I have to say that the whole EP is fantastic, from beginning to end. Matt sounds great! Beautiful Midnight is my favourite album of all time, so I am not going to compare. These are all refreshing takes on the material that I am glad we are able to experience. The recording is so lush and meant for head-phone listening ... I was never a huge fan of the original "Let's Get It On' (mind you, "never a huge fan for Matt Good is still a 9.5/10) . I'd even say this version is an improvement. Regardless of my attachment to the originals, if we get these versions live, I would be one happy camper!

Totally. I love it when he goes that high. Powerful stuff!

I think that "The Rat Who Would Be King" features the strongest vocal performance of any artist I've ever heard. Especially the last "love is not enough"... the choruses are lush and operatic and yeah... one of my favourites.

I know there's an understandable moratorium on here with regards to personal matters (so believe me when I say I am not bringing it up to engage in idle speculation), but if I recall correctly there was also something about Rich siding with his ex-wife on some matters when they divorced. I don't recall whether that came from Matt himself or whether that was conjecture, but I do remember that being mentioned as a factor. For those reasons and the ones I've listed above, I don't think Rich is coming back haha. That said, time does have a way of giving people perspective on things -- if Guns N' Roses can reunite after everybody sleeping with each other's girlfriends and Eric Clapton and George Harrison still be friends after being in a love triangle with the same woman, anything can happen. I think the lineup freshening was with regards to the In A Coma songs ...Big City Life and Oh Be Joyful ...seemed like Matt's bromance with Ryan Dahle was at its' peak then.
-
Yeah, I agree. If I remember correctly, he was trying to peddle an "Unofficial History of MGB" book that had some pretty incendiary stuff in it. I want to say Matt had to sue to avoid it being published...long time ago, though, don't remember the details clearly.

I I've been there several times to see shows (mostly Matt) and if you need to/want to get a drink, Hess Village is pretty popular (even if at times populated by McMaster bruhs) ...there's also a place right around the corner that looks like a dive, but is more like a family restaurant that has like 100+ beers of the world. They predated Bier Markt and West 50 by decades haha
