I never said those people were not generous. I applaud them for their philanthrophy. But, on the whole, if left unchecked the haves like to exploit the have-nots. We've seen this in many countries since the industrial revolution, and in Canada/U.S. we experienced it during the 1920's/1930's, which led to FDR creating the 'New Deal' & much needed welfare programs, worker rights, the right to form unions etc. Laissez-faire is just too extreme for me. Socialism/communism too. Something in-between, like we see in Canada & many European countries seems to work well.

thats a great point.

Canadians and Americans are much more similar than we are different. It depends where you go obviously in the U.S., but i stayed 3 weeks in California the past summer and it was a bit different, but nothing significant. Here's differences that i noticed: - People in Cali are a bit more afraid to talk to strangers than in Canada. They don't seem to interact with neighbours very much either. - There's a lot more blacks & mexicans/hispanics, and a lot less muslims & french people than in Canada. Other than that, i didn't see much difference in the people.

The Global Warming Thread
Moonlight_Graham replied to sodamntired's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
This problem will be fixed, unfortunately, when it really starts to affect people's health substancially & when it starts affecting the bottom line for countries like the US and China. By that time of course, many things will be irreversable & countless animal species will be extinct. The best thing for us to do now is do whatever you can to help the problem, and pressure your friends & family to do the same. Make your gov't know u want change, it has worked a bit so far but not enough. -
Met him for the first time after his Ottawa show amonth ago. He meets fans at his tourbus after every show. He was nice, got a pic w/ him & he signed my HM cd.

Well now those comments of course seem a lot more logical and less radical than what you said before. First, i do support a free-market economy, although it needs to be kept in check by government. I also believe in welfare programs for those who truly need it. I believe that healthcare is a basic human right that everyone should have access too for necessary concerns. i'm not a Marx-style socialist, but it would be interesting to see how a fixed/modified version of that would work. I wouldn't sacrifice my own last drink for a dying man. Me > a stranger. However, i would sacrifice some of what i owned if it could help somebody who truly needed it (like a starving person lying on the street....or in Africa). To me, i don't see the morality in people in 1st-world nations buying 50" plasma TV's while millions of people die from disease or starve in Africa because they live in an area that is so dry they are unable to grow proper food or sustain enough fresh drinking water. When those people die, certainly isn't for a lack of trying. I agree with you mostly about the homeless person example. Some of those people are there by choice, but many have mental illness problems. Don't give them money for food everyday, but get them medical help etc. But if they refuse and they want to live on the street because they think the nurses are trying to poison them, i can't help but give them some food because its certainly cruel just to see them die. Its also cruel for let them live like that, but its their choice (in a way). I'm more harsh for those on welfare who just dont want to get off their ass. 'A hand-up, not a hand-out' as the saying goes. If a person can't find a job, give them some basic money to get buy but on the condition they try their hardest to find a job & if they can't or refuse one that is offered to them then cut them off unless they have medical reasons. I wish there were no government handouts and taxes and we all gave to those truly in need, but unfortunately corportations & the well-off aren't as generous as is needed. We've seen that during the industrial revolution when employers took advantage or workers disgracefully, in compulsive toil as its referred. Oh and no i don't know about your thoughts on anarchism, i get you and Ecnarf & others mixed up of here. ;)

War sucks, but fighting something like WWII was necessary. He's got a point about the Legion, but just wear the fucking poppy.

The Global Warming Thread
Moonlight_Graham replied to sodamntired's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
I agree with you on the first part: global warning is real and we are the key contributor. However, you don't see how an individual can make a difference with lightbulbs, recycling etc.? Well, no you individually can't make much of an impact. But if everyone did it? If all 300+ million in the U.S. and Canada did it it makes a HUGE impact. 1 lightbulb isn't much, but 100 million lightbulbs takes a lot of coal burning in order to power them...and that coal is throwing CO2 and other garbage into the air. Same with cars. Smog sucks. Also, most countries aren't doing SHIT about this yet. Inclduing Canada, the U.S., China, India. Its bullshit & they are idiots. p.s. regular incandescent light bulbs should be banned completely in Canada within 5 years. Production of new petro-fueled cars? 10 years maybe, but thats way more complicated than bulbs. -
Youths Smoking Black Market Cigarettes
Moonlight_Graham replied to Bizud's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
i'd like to see some statistics on the ban vs no ban on how it influences usage of drugs, alchohol etc. That said, it sucks these kids are smoking unregulated cigarettes -

Passing a person lying on the street dying of thirst & not sacrificing a drink of your water for them is what i would call uncivilized. Is altruism simply moral & based on our pr-historic urges, or is it logical? Logic tells me that if everyone helped everyone else, strangers or not, life for all would be better than if everyone were selfish, greedy, & mean towards everyone else. What you want is everyone to fend for themselves, to keep what they earn & share it perhaps amongst your family but let strangers take care of themselves. You do not want us returning to tribal/communal forms of society, back to the jungle. What you do want is for us to become apes again, to fight over giant pieces of meat & whomever is stongest shall have that meat, while all the weak apes lay dead & starving while you enjoy your meal. That is what i would call uncivilized. I would rather be a human living in the jungle than devolve even further back into an ape. Pure Darwinism, the kind Hitler proposed for his "Aryan race", is for animals. I'm not an animal. Slavery essentially means that you are forced to do something against your will. In our gov't, if the majority of people vote to have a socialized system & to willingly pay taxes in order to help others, they are doing so with their own consent. Thus, that is not slavery.

Gst Cut To 5% On Jan. 1
Moonlight_Graham replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
I take it back. I'd rather the GST stay the same, but use a bit of the surplus we have to cut income tax or something else. A GST cut doesn't help the people who need it most, because the gov't doesn't charge GST on essential goods/services like milk, vegatables, prescription drugs, most health care services, education etc. Some of the surplus should also go to our health care system because its still shit & going to get worse as my parents get older. heyrabbit, i'm not a communist. Also, i think you're insane. Are you an anarchist by any chance, because it certainly sounds like it (not to say anarchists are insane, because they aren't & are deeply misunderstood). If so, an individualist anarchist? Collectist anarchist? I believe in a free market system, but having gov't limits & a welfare state w/ social programs. A strict capitalist economy doesn't work. We've seen this in the U.S. when FDR had to institute the 'New Deal' and welfare programs in the 1930's because the gap between the rich & poor was too vast, the workers had no rights & their labour wasn't justly accounted for. While taxes and worker unions can be annoying, I don't want to live in a country with sweatshops. Social programs, philanthropy, altruism aren't immoral. Quite the opposite. Marx may have indeed been onto something, but his theory is flawed. Communism obviously doesn't work because dictarships don't work. I like living in a liberal democracy that has social programs to help those that may be given a bad deal in life. I'm not a Nazi, i'm not a social-Darwinist when it comes to human-beings, dog-eat-dog & the weak deserve to die etc. I like fire departments. -
i thinik i got em all. But i'd recommend The Ocean, Dancing Invisible, and Go Fly Blind as some of his best early demos.

I always thought it was the Cubs vs Chicago White Sox, since the Cubs & Red Sox virtually never play each other, while the Sox & Cubs play 6 times every year. I take this phrase as being something about losers, since at his time of writing the song the White Sox had probably not won the World Series since 1917 i believe and the Cubs since 1908. The Red Sox, until a few years ago, hadn't won the World Series since 1918. either way, they're all metaphores for losers IMO.

fucking sweet! One thing i gotta say about the Conservatives, though i disagree with them on many things, is that they keep "most" of their election promies, at least compared to other parties (*cough* liberals*cough*). That anti-trust shit was f'ed up though. Cost me some $$$ in the stock market.
