Matt Good Covers "Blown Wide Open" by Big Wreck
Moonlight_Graham replied to Gomo's topic in Matthew Good
The cover sounds awesome. I love the chill vibe and Matt's laid back vocals, what a beautiful & refreshing cover. One of his best covers for sure. -
Thanks, but I don't want to assume anything. Anyone know for sure if Matt's Toronto show on Aug. 25 is full band or acoustic?
-
Read the lyrics for So Close, it's a very powerful song lyrically, I love it, but when I first heard it it was meh until I paid attention to the words. Empty's Road is a beautiful song, especially lyrically. That and Blue Skies for lyrics on WLRRR. To me it feels like much of WLRRR, especially the last half & the clunkers, was written with the lyrics as the focus and a song built around that, instead of the other way around. That's just the way I feel though I could be wrong. Some great songs on that album but also quit a few I usually skip.

I've wavered back and forth on this issue for the last year now. Trans people have an extraordinarily high suicide rate, so with that said, even you don't agree with the pronouns or whatnot, for the sake of these people who many are going through extremely difficult times trying to sort out their own identity & acceptance, given the very high suicide rate I say just call them by the pronoun they want even if you disagree & you're just humouring them because at the end of the day it will make their day that much less difficult if they are struggling.

Wicked!! These Midnight OIl shows, is Matt doing them all acoustic or with a band? Is the one slated in Toronto in a week acoustic or with band?
-
mrtrufflepig I totally agree with you, great post. Haven't gotten into Peterson's work beyond his trans pronoun controversy. I see both sides of it, but i agree it can be dangerous for the government to legislate pronouns as illegal discrimination that can be prosecuted.

Radio Airplay for Matt's new singles
Moonlight_Graham replied to MatthewGoodFan101's topic in Matthew Good
Haven't hear Decades on the radio the big city i live in. It's a relatively catchy single, I think more radio-friendly than AYSAD. Could be that Matt's not the "it" thing anymore for radio to rely on for content, radio doesn't spin his singles like they do Mother Mother or Arkells etc. Can't remember if I heard AYSAD on radio. Zero Orchestra I heard a few times. Had It Coming I didn't hear on radio, but not surprised as that was the worst song on that album IMO, they should have went with Arrows of Desire & Via Dolorosa. -
this is awesome. great work!

Very cool video. I like the song. Would be nice to hear an MG single get into solid radio rotation. Last hit he had was Born Losers I think, thought I think Last Parade got some solid radio play too if I remember.

We almost got it LOL. Thank you Matt.

Will We Ever Get To See/hear "ahead By A Century"

I miss Garage Wine.... -
The "Rooms" version of Hello Time Bomb is the anti-christ. Had It Coming is pretty bad.

Can anyone make out the lyrics from the "Bullets In A Briefcase" instagram clip? I can figure out most of them but some I can't.
-
This clip is incredible. Listening to Chaotic Neutral the 1st time I was lukewarm on the album halfway through, then Tiger By The Tail and Cold Water came on and they floored me. Matt's really found a new talent with these kinds of songs since LOES with the subtle vocals and chill or jazzy vibe. I think these types of songs are the best stuff he's recorded since Avalanche.
-
Catchy tune! Clearly this song about the Leafs winning the other night, so I understand the rush to release. I kid... Thanks for posting the lyrics Matt. Warner seems to have been really supportive the last 2 records with the videos, nice to see in this age.

Bronson Centre is the best venue in Ottawa for a concert. Amazing acoustics too. Saw Mother Mother and MG there, both amazing shows. NAC i think has 2-3000 capacity, but Bronson Centre only 900 I believe. The NAC is a beautiful venue, but just really sucks for a rock concert for all the reasons mentioned. Same reason why The Grammys suck...elitist nonsense In 2009 I saw Metallica in Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto. People in Ottawa in the 100's were actually sitting. You don't sit during a Metallica concert. Montreal (and Quebec City), they go nuts. Best crowds in USA/Canada from everything I've heard. French people love to party. Toronto was somewhere in-between. Canada Day is an awesome party. I think alcohol also has a lot to do with that too. Maybe they should force everyone to take a few shots of whiskey before entering the NAC Lol. I really dislike elitist artsy BS like the NAC attitude. Same reason the Grammys suck. Telling rock musicians they should dress up in a suit and tie at the Grammys (or Rock & Roll "Hall of Fame") is very un-rock and roll! I don't know how wearing a fancy outfit to see an orchestra or ballet at the NAC makes the music sound better. All it does is suck the fun out of everything.

Saw Matt at the NAC a couple of times. I'm from Ottawa, it's a strange town because it's a government town. Working for the public service tends to suck the spirit out of people, so the crowds in Ottawa are very reserved. Ottawa is a very reserved kind of city. The people are very polite, but they are shy. I think they want to stand up, but nobody wants to be the first ones to do it, so they get bashful and just sit... Maybe 5 or 6 years ago I saw a MG show at NAC, Everyone was of course sitting during the show, I was maybe 5-10 rows back. I think Load Me Up or something came on and everyone stood up for that. But after it was over I didn't want to sit down, I wanted to stand. Most everyone else sat back down. So it's just me and a few other people standing in the NAC, and I felt like an idiot but refused to sit because it's a damn rock concert!! So then this woman behind me who was sitting asked me if I was going to stand the whole concert? I said yes. Then she got mad because I was "blocking her view". That's how fucking lame some music lovers are in Ottawa. If you want to sit, go watch a movie.

Oh that's neat! Thank you,

Been a diehard fan since Underdogs but my first show was 2007 on the acoustic Hospital Music tour. Amazing show. I've probably seen 9 or 10 shows since then. Saturday's Toronto show was the best show I've seen since that 2007 acoustic show, and the best one with the full band. Beautiful Midnight isn't even one of my favorite MG/MGB albums, I would personally rank Audio of Being, Avalanche, LOES, and LOTGA above it. There was something about the electricity in crowd though at this show, and maybe the band fed off that too? I've never seen an MG crowd so into the music, or the band play so well. I'm usually disappointed at how lame the MG crowds are.

Easily the highlight of the night.

Last night's Toronto # 3 of 3 show was being filmed for possible DVD release, Matt joked that he had already fucked up during Giant. Yes Adam there was a film crew member filming the entire show in the pit. Easily one of the best MG shows I've ever been to. The crowd was pretty loud, singing through every song, an enthusiastic bunch considering a bit of an older demographic. Matt was on point, very strong. Stu was great as always. Blake is amazing, one of the best live drummers I've seen, getting better with age. He can do the hard stuff like this album just as well as the subtle jazzy stuff from LOES. New bassist kind of just blended in but did the job. My girlfriend isn't an MG fan (or much of a rock fan) but i dragged her to the show. She was really impressed by Stu and Blake's musicianship. Stood beside some separate groups of Americans who drove up for the show. I didn't have VIP but they did. They enjoyed the soundcheck experience etc. but said Matt didn't shake hands or sign autograph because he was "a germaphobe". I said not really, & pointed out that it's because he gets sick every tour and has a respiratory ailment. They said overall the VIP was too expensive for the value they received (also why I didn't buy it). On top of that, the venue security effed up and started letting in non-VIP members into the show before all the VIP members were let in. Got a closer look at the monkey mask when they were putting the gear away. It looks like exactly the same one as this one. Overall awesome show, so glad I went.

Video Card memories
Moonlight_Graham replied to Sly Botts's topic in Tech Section: A Hard Drive at Risk
My first graphics card was the Voodoo 3 2000 (16mb). I bought it so I could play Unreal Tournament, among other 3D games. That must have been right around the time Beautiful Midnight came out. My favorite period for PC gaming was the mid-90's, or around the time of Doom/Doom 2, X-Com, Tie Fighter, Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall, adventure games galore etc. In other words, the time between when the 1st Doom game came out to just before games started getting true 3D in the late 90's (where you needed the 3D graphics cards, where the games all started to look the same because they were using the same graphics engines). Around 1993-1994 I got my first PC. I had grown up on console 8-bit and 16-bit games, and at this time the SNES/Genesis era was winding down and the Playstation/N64 era was beginning and they just didn't appeal to me as much as the games on my PC. I never owned a PS1 or N64 until the very end of their life cycle in the early 2000's. After the early 2000's, PC Gaming was just too expensive to keep up with and console games I found were getting better with Xbox and PS2 so I mostly left PC gaming after that. PC gaming also seemed pretty rad in the late 80's and early 90's too. -
What's the bassist's name for this tour? Any background info on him?
