I gotta ask, why is everyone so excited about this movie? Is it just because it took a lot of time and money, or is it based on something I'm supposed to know about, or what? I mean...granted I've only seen the trailer once or twice on TV, but all I could think of was that the CGI must not be finished yet...

I suspect it's a little of both.

Finished first playthrough of Borderlands this afternoon. Second started, briefly. -

Finished a run through Dragon Age, now fiddling with Borderlands. -

Dragon Age: Origins Very, very impressive. Looks like Mass Effect, plays like Baldur's Gate, and has the most ambiguous moral system ever. -
Ran through it once. Quite good as a streamlined Diablo clone until the last 5 or 6 floors, the end being pretty awful.

What Videogame(s) Are You Playing Right Now?

It's a nasty season for games. I want, nay, I need Left4Dead 2, Borderlands, Modern Warfare 2, and Dragon Age. And that's like $200+ right there. Shit. -
Yeah, I've seen some conspiracy theorists frothing at the mouth about Gulf War Syndrome being linked to Squaline, which is an adjuvant used in a number of things, including the Anthrax vacceines which were issued to American troops in Iraq in the early 90s. One of those "one study to prove it did and three to prove it didn't" deals.

Yessir. The only thing that is slightly worrying to me is that the are claiming that death in healthy young adults is usually the result of a cytokine storm, an immune system over-reaction. While no doctor has ever told me so, I count my immune system as ridiculously strong - I haven't had flu in 15 years at least, if ever, immunization or no (no shots until the past 4-5 years anyway, nor any infection beyond common cold). And what they're not talking about is whether a strong immune system makes you more likely to die once infected. Again,, the granularity really is't there to identify actual risk groups by anything other than age and chronic illness. That said...I'm waiting. And if I get it at all, it'll be when wait times are negligable and then only for the projected 18 month cycle. And no, I'm not really worried about mecury poisoning or gulf war syndrome.

Blazing Saddles and Dr. Strangelove obviously. Not huge on comedy really, but there's something about Hot Fuzz that makes it the only movie I can watch over and over without getting tired of it.

There has been some conspiracy mudslinging about this thing being a good test-bed for the pandemic plans built for real threats. That being the case, it would explain some of the government and media fervor. Anyway, here's a graph of fatalities from various causes stacked up againt H1N1 over a 300 day period. Assuming this is anywhere near accurate, it does put things in perspective, even ignoring the demographic and geographic overlays that could have been included but were not... Taking it all literally and without salt, you're about equally likely to die of leprosy, though that number will obviously climb as the virus spreads. You're 179 times more likely to die in a car accident. Etc, etc....it's been a while now since this thing was created, so it's certainly no longer accurate, if it ever was....but it's interesting, I guess. Graphydoodle

If you are a hockey player, get the shot immediately. All the cool kids are doing it. Fuck, I hated hockey long before this...

With a .308 Winchester, from afar? I hear you.

It was ok, I guess. they finally got weapon hardpoints right, and Simon Pegg did his part admirably. The rest....was alright.

Let's escalate this joke some more, shall we? DEFCON 1! -
"The essentials of speaking are in not speaking at all. If you think that you can finish something without speaking, finish it without saying a single word. If there is something that cannot be accomplished without speaking, one should speak with few words, in a way that will accord well with reason. To open one's mouth indiscriminately brings shame, and there are many times when people will turn their backs on such a person." Hagakure The Book of the Samurai

I wouldn't go that far, but it is very very good. AI is actually pretty horrible, but unless you play like I did, you'll never notice. I played good the first time through, I explored way too much, finding almost everything, and effectively ruining it for my second run through as evil. I'd already seen 90% of the locations in the first run. Also, there aren't enough batteries around to specialise in energy weapons if you're evil and kill or enslave all the traders. -
Google Streetview Now In Canada
Sparq replied to Crusader's topic in Tech Section: A Hard Drive at Risk
Meh. Look at Ottawa...tallest building in the NCR is only 30 floors. My dad is standing in my driveway on streetview, with my car parked in someone else's driveway across an intersection. -

It was, until everyone figured out every goddamned cheap trick in the book. It's just the same thing over and over now...the game was in it's prime for the first couple weeks when the Survivors almost never won and genuine panic ruled the day. Now, it's tried and true routine. Terrible. On my own server, I'm alone in this assessment, I know. But expert campaigns are by far mor entertainign han VS anything. That said, some quirk of my connection or computer make headshots and successfull pounces/smoker tongues all but nonexistent for me. -
Stargate Universe It Looks Awesome, What Do You Think?
Sparq replied to bishopx's topic in Rentals, Television, and Readables
I never really watched Stargate anything, have seen bits of a few episodes. Same with Battlestar Galactica. From the trailer I've seen for this thing, it looks like they just wish they'd made BSG instead. -
Nice. 3.4" or 5"? I've been looking in to getting my restricted license on and off for years, here. I really should pull the trigger, as it were, on that one.

Driving From Ottawa To Montreal For A Concert. Help Me!
Sparq replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Open Discussion
Turning right on red lights is now LEGAL in Quebec except where there's a sign saying otherwise. It's also illegal on Montreal Island. I dunno where the Bell center is, but keep that in mind. -
Pay closer attention to trailers, and practically half of them include scenes that don't make the final cut. After he got sprayed with alien goo I was expecting a standard mysterious viral outbreak among the humans which didn't occur. If nothing else, it proves that you do not need A-list douchebags in a movie to make it great. District 9 with no one I've ever heard of? Fantastic. War of The Worlds remake with Tom Cruise? Bloody awful. Winnar.
