I doubt that it is to keep a secret undying love for 3 years and counting. If it is secret, chances are that it is not love.

Well, the reason I've kept it secret was because, until recently, the object of my affection was in a very serious relationship. So, out of respect for him, I kept my feelings to myself. If I didn't care about him, I would have been trying to break them up. And now that he's single, I'm just too terrified to tell him.

 

Anyways, to answer the question, I'd have to say dumb Americans, just look at the president...
