  1. this thread has become way too juvenile and is completely missing the essence of the initial arugement. math is hard. english is easy. i could care less. i dont really care how hard you work for something. it was your choice to take engineering as it was my own to take english. i started arguing simply because heyrabbit thought he could belittle an entire area of study, calling it BS, and liken it to astrology. heyrabbit might not understand sociology, or maybe he sees no use for sociological perspectives; however, others do find it a worthwhile endeavor to humor these perspectives, being open when it comes to new ideas... while keeping in mind that they are not necessarily fact. but the same kind of thinking should be applied when dealing with math and all areas of science. some of us want to learn about and understand human nature, and this is done through the eyes of many individuals, all of whom have something different to contribute and the potential to say something completely meaningful. marx, derrida, foucaut, camus, jung etc. are all indivduals worth taking a look at, regardless of what you study. the reason sociologists still look to them is the same reason why mathematicians still look back to the likes of fibonacci, einstein and newton. sociology is useful to me because i can take these perspectives and apply them to literature in order to gain insight about the works themselves as well as the world around me. i digress. dismissing humanities because of the amount of work involved or how much tuition is paid is childish and is an arguement not worth having. we mightas well sit here and argue about which we find more fulfilling, art or math.
  2. but usually an english B.A. doesn't suffice on its own, the hard work gets made up in other areas, depending on whether the person goes to teachers college afterward, writes an honors thesis, does post-grad work on something more specific... an engineering degree on the other hand, will suffice on its own. as it goes (at least with my experience in comparison to my peers) an english student writes generally more papers for every semester than any other major. we also read more frequenlty and in larger volumes than any other major. when it was at its worst, i was reading a book a week for every class. if it were an engineering degree, more practical work would be done... however, in this case, while you're learning "shit that's entirely new to you" and things, we're digesting books that have historical/political/sociological/philosophical contexts to them which are equally as new and arent necessarily more or less difficult to apply. i didn't take english because it was easy, i dont think many people have that kind of thought when it comes to their futures. i was simply not as good in math as i was english. i had taken things like calculus and physics in my last years of high school, but frankly didnt enjoy them nearly enough to pursue anything in those fields.
  3. i just liked what i heard, which tended to be the more shoegaze-inspired material. i have a soft spot for that kind of music.
  4. THANK GOD FOR YOU SHIRI!!! i think this is a first.
  5. i never really noticed her poor drumming... like aside from the fact that it's very simple. she keeps time well enough for my tastes. but that's what the white stripes are and why the raconteurs exist in the first place. simple, blues inspired rock versus blues inspired rock with much more depth musically, hense better drumming being needed. "depth" and "white stripes" should never be found in the same sentence (aside from this one) so i have no bone to pick with her drumming. obviously im always open to hearing what it is about her drumming that's so bad. there's always things i havent considerred.
  6. TV on the Radio - "Wash the Day Away"
  7. i kinda liked what team sleep did better. if you've heard "natalie portman" you'll know what i mean.
  8. when i was younger i got the mac comparison a lot. he's the one on the left. i dont think we look that similar anymore. p.s. if i look like im falling apart in that photo it's because i just woke up. no drugs in this boy's system whatsoever.
  9. true.but the same applies to any other socio course wow, that's a load of bullshit.
  10. it's really easy to belittle intro-level courses, which is what it sounds like you're doing.
  11. i've heard people are attracted to people that look like their parents, but ive never heard of liking someone that looks like you, although it sortof makes sense. i cant see it applying to those who loathe their looks though...
  12. they played "v fest" which i missed because im going to school way far north of toronto (four hours) for the next 8 months. im not sure when they'll be back and if ill be in town or not. but i'll definitely try to go.
  13. "triad" by tool and "just like you imagined" by nine inch nails are probably my favorites, but anything by shadowy men on a shadowy planet will float my boat.
  14. that you have lots of splainin' to dooo
  15. that's a good question. probably because of his goth-leanings. EDIT: i think because he doesnt fit our stereotypical view of what the newsmedia has constructed as what constitutes a terrorist, it makes it difficult for the media to go and say "well he's a terrorist too" because then anyone can be a terrorist. despite the fact that both you and i know that anyone can be a terrorist, that doesn't help the media at all. they need an almost cartoonish portrayal of what the enemy looks like, so they can go on being moralists and telling us who the bad guy is every night at 6. im guessing that if the assailant wore a turban, things would be different. hooray for the media and pointing the finger at goth culture!! yipee. let's see if they can get another scapegoat like they had for columbine. actually, the fact that they're even comparing this event to columbine is ridiculous.
  16. so far, this album isnt really sitting well with me. it's good, but theres just something i dont like about it. i need to listen to it more though to figure out what that is.
  17. right, and toilet humor is cutting-edge.
  18. hahahaa no... as cool as that is, i actually think you look similar to her a bit. from what i've seen of what you look like, i think your smile resembles hers. kinda. i think that's where i see the resemblance anyways. lol @ anton kinda looking like elisha cuthbert...
