Top 10 Albums Of 2004
HoboFactory replied to spiritofeden's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
at least they arnt parading around as a Duran Duran cover band. Duran Duran wasnt good in the 80's, and its not good now. ...maybe, but then again FF is more like an imitation of Kraftwerk, which incidentally, sucked even worse than Duran Duran. -
People often say that facts don't contradict themselves. But I think that's not entirely the case. Just do demonstrate how, here's an example. Suppose two people were arguing about global warming, one believes that people are responsible for it and it's up to people to stop it. The other believes that it is a part of a natural global cycle of periodic cooling and heating. The one who believes people are to blame will point out the fact people are letting tons and tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, these gases contribute to global warming. The other will point out that scientists recently observed that the CO2 (a major greenhouse gas) concentration in the atmposhere nearly doubled in the last decade, which doesn't coincide with global CO2 production which rose by less than 3%, indicating that it must have occured naturally. Both statistical facts are true, yet what they seem to be saying are exactly opposite. I think such is the nature of Moore films, he does use facts, but only the facts that prove what he is saying. All of the anti-Moore people only use the facts that prove something that is opposed to Moore's point. So the truth porbably lies somewhere in the middle (a little bit closer to Moore's side though ;) )

Just outta curiousity...who is this Ryan character??

That's probably because if someone disagrees with most or all of Matt Good has to say, I doubt they'd join a Matt Good fan message board. I think most of the time when people disagree with him, they just write him an offensive email.

American Restrictions On Cuba
HoboFactory replied to HoboFactory's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
And of course the US is quick to label Castro as an evil dictator. But I understand that he's relatively popular in Cuba. When the Bay of Pigs invasion was launched, with it's aim to take down Castro's gov't, they expected that ordinary Cuban citizens would rise up in favor of the invasion, and Castro would be ousted. Since nobody did rise to the occasion, one can understand that nobody wanted Castro ousted. I think the reason the US has such problems with him isn't that he's communist (China and Vietnam have proven that the US can ignore the abuses of an oppressive gov't if it is profitable to American corporations), it is that he has deprived, and in a sense, continues to deprive the US of a lot of profits. Prior to Castro, the land of Cuba and its government were subjects of American investors. So when Castro came into the picture, offering a Cuba where Cubans own the land, and Cubans govern, rather than the interestes of American business; naturally Cubans took well to the idea, and the US did not. Some people always point out that if Cuba is so great, how come those handfuls of people in makeshift boats always try to escape. Well, if one looks at Mexico, a capitalist country and a democracy, millions of Mexicans escape into the US every year. -
Yeah it was kinda lousy. Worst movie of the year though?? I don't really think so

But what about the monk??

American Restrictions On Cuba
HoboFactory replied to HoboFactory's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
China's record of oppression and human rights abuse is far worse than that of Cuba, as is Vietnam's. But China is practically America's biggest trading partner, and American investment in Vietnam is growing rapidly from what I've read. So I'm not sure why the US sees fit to encourage free trade with some communist countries, and forbid Cuba. -

Sexual Preference Education
HoboFactory replied to cavalier_eternal's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
I'm not quite sure what is meant by, "teaching a homosexual or heterosexual lifestyle." I think the only lifestyle that's part of a typical school curriculum is the abstinence which they encourage in health class, which I happen to believe is prudent regardless of your preferences. Presently, they don't impose either lifestyle choice in most schools. edit: spelling -
Cause to dance in the streets, I'm sure.

What's respectable about Matt is that he uses his spotlight responsibly, so to speak. He's quite vocal of his beliefs, but he bothers to gives sources for what he says and he stays informed. This contrasts sharply with the vast majority of celebrities who voice their opinions to the public and know little to nothing on the actual subject.

I steal from no one.

Vote "some" He's obviously very well-informed and intelligent. But because his expressed views vary so greatly, as in they cover a wide range of issues; I can't say agree with everything that he says.

Actually they're reasonably certain Jesus' birth was in either late December or early January. In the Russian Orthodox faith for example, Christmas is celebrated in January (the 6th or 11th, can't recall for sure) because they believe that to be the correct. This coincides with the pagan holiday however, so the celebrations have come together and overlapped in a way. For example the tree decoration has no basis in Christianity but was practiced by pagans. Regardless, with schools and other public institutions, I figure it should be all or nothing. To exclude Christianity is completely unfair, so it would only be right to either allow it, or to exclude everything else along with it.

I'm not saying it's a huge deal or anything, potentially irksome though.

Well just bacause it's "half-expected" doesn't really make it ok.

Well if you're gonna be living with the chickadee that owns the whole world, can't imagine you'd be living in a monk's cabin or something.

Why not. Your all drooling over her and he's the one who gets to sleep with her. If I were him I'd be laughing and kissing her in spite of you all. ;) Well I've got a girlfriend, and if a bunch of people that she doesn't know were oggling her on the internet and talking about how they'd like to do her. Well that'd make me pretty damn uneasy.

Well I went to a school's holiday concert only a few days ago. They had Kwanzaa and Hanukkah songs, and some non-religion specific songs, but Christian songs were excluded. Now I'm not the most deeply religious person of all, but I figure if Christians are ok with Hanukkah and Kwanzaa songs being performed at holidy concerts, why should non-Christians take offense to Christian songs??

Well since it's a comedy and all, I wasn't watching it with the hope of seeing some intricate plot or an engrossing story. But it didn't really have a story of any kind. It's more like a disjointed collection of unfunny stories that barely fit together to make sense. Although I could have over-looked that if the movie was really funny. But that wasn't the case either. Some comedies are funny because they're ridiculous and off-the-wall, others are smart and clever. This movie tries both at times but succeeds at neither. Wasn't sufficiently random or crazy to make one laugh, and not smart or clever enough either.

New Rock Sub-genre
HoboFactory replied to rmak's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
Oh boy, that's something to mark your calendar for! Years from now we'll know what to call the predominant style of rock of the first decade of the 21st century. Wooo! What a time to be alive that's gonna be! -
I meant your revolving door, those things can be just as deadly.
