Talk Talk
Manchalivin replied to darrenbacker's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
Yeah, that's the most risky thing I think I've heard from a band that was on a big record label and had some pretty big hits. I really respect what they did, choose not to follow any expected formats or styles and totally just did their own thing. Just nice easy flowing pieces of music. Nothing specific you can really pinpoint it as. I wouldn't really call it rock, jazz, or pop, just music. -

Cold Harbour? (lights Of Endangered Species Megathread!)

Doesn't sound like it. I'm surprised since Vancouver came out on vinyl and I would think this one would be of great interest on vinyl. I don't personally care since I don't buy vinyl, don't have a record player, but other people would really like it. -

The acoustic guitar in the first version of Lights of Endangered Species (esp. towards the end) had a guitar sound that reminded me of Rush for some reason. -

After a few listens to the finished Non Populus, I'm loving it. It's even better than the demo for sure. There's some clear familiarity yet this doesn't sound like any other song he's done in my opinion. I hear quite a bit of Explosions in the Sky influence and some of these musical segments are every bit as beautiful and more so than EITS. It's Matthew Good so it's obviously better. I like the changes in Matt's voice throughout, the glockenspiel addition, the guitar sound in the solos and the acoustic towards the end has a cool tone. I also really like the female backing vocals. The whole ending is fantastic. Musically this is one of his best songs in a while. Dang it though, this has got to be it for final versions. He says he isn't streaming the record but he does change his mind sometimes. I hope he sticks to it for this because I don't want to hear anymore until the record is released. I even made myself a promise to not listen to anything else until it's released, just in case he does let us hear more. -
How much risk do you want him to take? Some musicians overstep their bounds and end up taking far too great of risks that make them sound either totally different or ridiculous and forced. I feel MG has changed it up a fair bit throughout his career and he challenged himself a lot making this album and I am pretty sure you'll hear that in at least a few of the new songs. Some of it may even be to the point where you think he went too far so be careful what you wish for regarding taking risks. I mean, do you want his music to not sound like himself?

The label definitely has a bit of say but at this point in his career I think he has a fair bit of freedom with it. -

Maybe I am wrong in thinking it would do well at radio then. It is a very unusual song for MG but I still thought it was very catchy and would possibly bring him new fans. -

I can agree about the drumming on this song, it does sound like the drumming on Vancouver and lacks punch. I think that is only thing that kind of disappoints me about the finished version though. But I think the album has some more interesting drumming, just not this song. Overall, it sounds really nice to me and as has been said, this is definitely one of the most standard songs on the album but to me it still has quite a different sound from Matt's other stuff. It reminds me of the Beatles a little bit, and has kind of an old-ish sound which is cool. I really like how the piano sounds and other sounds stick out more in this completed version but there really isn't much different here compared to the demo, which is kind of a good thing. I like how the end guitar part sounds here, it sounds unique. If this is too plain or ordinary for some of you, I don't think you should be concerned yet because I'm sure most will warm up to the album. It may just take some time to get used to. -

So, place your bets on what the single will be? If anyone knows what it is, butt out. ;) -
I've had Bible verses in my signature for little while now, well before I posted in this thread. So what's wrong or funny about that?
-
Thank you and my tone may not have been the nicest but it's just because I feel I was being unfairly criticized and was being perfectly reasonable.
-
Well as stupid and sad as that would be, if that's what the admins must do then there's nothing I can do about it. For the record, you might want to note I'm not the one who started this silly argument. All I did was post a single Bible verse and nothing else and that caused RicardoObviouso to say "no bible quotes" so naturally I'm going to defend my obvious right to post Bible quotes. I said absolutely nothing in my original post that should bother anyone. Period.
-
I'm not pushing it or trying to provoke at all. Maybe I came across that way in the other thread but here I'm simply defending my right to post Bible verses in here. I have just as much right to do that as you or others have to post whatever you want. I'm not trying to force it down peoples' throats and it's not my problem if it makes anyone feel uncomfortable for some strange reason. I could say the same about other peoples' quotes but you don't see me doing that.
-
I don't see the problem. It doesn't say bible verses excluded and is for words of wisdom. If it bothers you for whatever reason then don't read them. Sorry to bring actual wise words into the thread.
-
Cliche? Well I couldn't care less if the world thinks it's cliche, its words are more full of wisdom than any other book and it is truth. If people don't want to believe or agree with it then skip past it.
-
Same to you my brotha ;)
-
Why, I thought this was the Words of Wisdom thread?

I appreciate Bimbly's counter points and criticism as well. It can't all be praise.
-
Original Species: Sorry for that, I'll try to stop talking so much about the new record. ;) And while I'm glad my comments are getting you excited, I hope you don't read too much into them as my opinion on this could be a lot different than yours. I really hope you enjoy his new stuff but I don't want you to be let down by too much hype.

I'm not sure but I think only some are credited to both of them and the odd ones with the whole band. I could be wrong but I think the majority are strictly Good. Whatever the case, I have little doubt Genn added a little something but I think MG is the far greater talent overall. His latest records aren't my favourite from him either, that goes to BM and Avalanche and there's a certain something I haven't heard from him since then but I'm not bothered by it because there's something different that's also great at times with his more recent music. It will never be the same as before so might as well embrace the new, as long as it keeps my interest enough. Honestly, on the whole, I'd argue Vancouver his most lacking album of his solo career. Don't get me wrong, I like it and songs like The Boy Who Could Explode, Great Whales of the Sea, Us Remains Impossible and Last Parade stand out but a fair bit of it is kind of dull. I'm not a big fan of Empty's Theme Park either. The chorus and strings are nice, as are the drums at parts, but overall it's too long for its own good and is kind of boring to me now. That kinda goes for VNA as well. I like On Nights Like Tonight and Volcanoes but sometimes they bore me. Vancouver is a unique album in ways, but at the same time there's a same-ness to it that dulls it. Sonically or something, there's hardly any variation. Perhaps the production also affects it as well. But anyways, this new album seems much more interesting to me and you might just come around when you hear it. And bonus, Warne is back to make it sound tops.

It's pretty clear to me you know more about music than I do. I figure though, the melody, rhythm, lead guitar, whatnot don't change much on his greats either I don't think so I'm not really sure what you're looking for. Also, I doubt Dave Genn brought that much to the table since MG wrote almost all the music for MGB.
