Think Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal", where he suggested that the Irish sell their children to the British, so that the Irish would have money and the British would have food. He even included several recipes for cooking the children. I don't know how many people took him seriously.

How would Darwin's theory be against homosexuality? All people die - this is true. Therefore, gay people will die. It's been largely proven that a child's upbringing doesn't directly affect sexuality (i.e., being raised by or near other gay people doesn't make someone gay). So if homosexuality is largely just a mutation of genes, where exactly does Darwin's theory come into this? Unless homosexuality were, say, a very uncommon genetic trait that could be inherited (like left-handedness, which has the same occurance, 1 in 10 people), what, exactly, would Darwin's theory have to do with it? Gay people will die the same as the rest of us, only gay people will not leave children behind (in the majority of cases), while straight people will (in the majority of cases). P.S. Toadman, there are passages in the Bible referring directly to homosexuality, it's in Leviticus. You'll find it right next to "A woman is unpure for 30 days after giving birth to a boy, and unpure for 60 days if she gives birth to a girl". My point in this is that people have used the Bible in a way that only suits their theology on the topic of gay people. Instead of asking, "What would Jesus do?", they've asked, "How can we be intolerant?". For anyone that's wondering, I've been raised a Roman Catholic, and go to church every sunday, so I think I know a thing or two on this topic.

I don't want to have an election until the final report of the Gomery Inquiry has been released, and we know all the answers to the sponsorship scandal. Common sense, really. I'm not really a liberal supporter (I'm a Green), but I'm really not warm to Stephen Harper, considering that he would have sent our troops out to Iraq simply because the U.S. said so, thereby making Canada actually look like the whipping boy we really are.

I really find it hard to believe that taxing rich people will result in higher prices for goods. Face it, when someone earns 10 million dollars a year, getting taxed plus/minus a few thousand or even ten thousand dollars doesn't even register on the radar.

Excellent points, Bizud. Speaking of health care in the U.S., approximately 40 million people are without health insurance in the states. That's larger than the population of Canada, and over 10% of the population. What happens if those people get into a car accident? The money comes out of their own pockets, and couple that to the fact these people generally work low-paying jobs, may well already be in debt and are possibly struggling to make ends meet - its just undoable. Lowering taxes can help the economy, when it's done right. And that's not to say that lowering taxes in exchange for cutting social programs is good, either. Currently in the U.S., George Bush's tax cuts went almost exclusively (in dollar terms) to the top half of the population, and it's contributed to 2/3s of the deficit. Taxes have to be cut to the people who buy more things, and those are the lower class. Why? Rich people already have most of the things they need - a house paid for, big screen tv, three cars and a boat, and only need to buy small things on a regular basis, such as clothes or food. People who don't earn as much probably pay a mortgage and finance a car, or use public transportation. They also have lower margins of income and spend only on necessities. When taxes are cut and they have some funds freed up, they might be able to get themselves out of personal debt, or start buying things they don't need - as Voltaire said, "The superfluous is necessary". That is, luxury items may not be necessary for survival, but they are good for the economy. Give rich people a few extra thousand dollars a year, and they won't blink. Give poor people a few extra thousand dollars per year, and they will spend it. Which makes more economic sense?

In the first place, I am firmly against the death penalty, no matter hte circumstances. And secondly, in countries that do have the death penalty, executing people who don't have the mental capacity to understand what they're doing is just barbaric. As much as they want their gun-toting, yee-hawing justice, some people need help.

So, who else here has this book? To me, it's proved to be endlessly funny... I can pick it up and open the book and start reading it, and it never quite loses its charm. Stewart makes really good use of satire, as well as mocking anything that there is to be mocked.
