    Opener

When last I saw him and he opened with Poor Man's Grey, which is funny becasue i was sure he was going to open with Put out your lights, which would rock too. I was pretty psyched though, just the same.
  2. I could never see loverboy, if only because when they played "Turn me Loose" I'd picture that big, juicy, spinning Whopper from the ad they sold that song to. Oh yeah, I can see it...I've gotta have it my way or no way at all...Big think juicy beef...thats my way. Turn me loose, so I can go sink my teeth into that delicious burger. I wanna fly..straight to burger king..oh thats a tasty burger. Picture it. That must be what that song must be about. Why else would they sell the song to BK? You agree with me.
  3. Is is stupid for me to point out that George Thorogood has a song called "I drink alone", and that it's perfect for this purpose?
  4. Did anyone else notice that the new MBlog refers to matt having "some recording to do for the greatest hits record due out in September"? I think that means that we can expect some new stuff on the record too - maybe some alternate versions of the favorites, or just the prerequisite one-new-song-to-push sales. Lets' hope for the first. Hell, let's hope for both!
  5. what's with the smashing pumpkins referances?
  6. Velvet Revolver's album is one of the best I've picked up in a while. Gone are the days when men put out albums like this one, and I can't sit an let people slag it. One thing this record (contraband) has that not a lot of records has these days is Slash behind the board. The Mix on this record is amazing, as is with all of Slash's stuff. He follows in a great tradition that most people don't even know about. Guys like him and Jimmy Page, they appear to be these drunkards who play guitar (poorly) and just barely get by with studio magic. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When Slash is in the studio, you can hear his influence on the sound quality, and when you read interviews, he really knows what he's talking about - instictively. The tonal qualities of his own instrument are enough, but all his records are mixed so perfectly, nothing is too messy to make out, despite being densly layered and textural. If you don't believe me, check out the Use your Illusions series - the CD's, not MP3's, becasue Slash'll tell you like I will right now, MP3's won't do it justice. Listen to a whole record, for a change, and you'll see what I mean. VR Rocks.
  7. Joe Satriani - crystal pLANEt. seeing what I can get away with.
  8. I think The Hip are one of the best bands ever, because they A) Play stuff that's very thoughtful and introspective B ) Play stuff thats Rockin' and Party/Radio friendly. C) Blatently write songs that are Canadian in their worldview, and obviously that's going to incorporate a certain view of America. D) Don't try to write songs that sound too much different that what we'd expect from them to make them more Us radio-friendly. E) Put on an AMAZINGLY entertaining show, completely pretentious-free, and play their instruments solidly. But, as I am Canadian, I have to tack this on the end so those of us not so polite don't jump down my throat. "That's just me, I could be wrong."
  9. I can't believe you mentioned this - I happened to catch that performance, and it was one of the worst things I've ever seen. WHY IS THERE SO MUCH BAD MUSIC OUT THERE???? And why do people buy it???
  10. That was some of the worst music I've ever heard. The title of this thread should be changed so people won't be tempted to check it, generating more hits on that awful site.
  11. What ever happened to the talk of a live album? I recall a buzz after Avalanche came out, but nothing more. I'd kill for a live cut of that slick new version of "Load Me Up" with the finger picked main riff replacing the piercing riff in the original. EDIT - Oh, and I'd like to know how often you might find yourself checking online fan sites, like this one. How often do you peruse the bored? Do you generally think that the conversation is intelligent (not that It's supposed to be), or is it one of the sources of the major pains in the ass that you have to contend with. What are your thoughts about "Audio of Being" getting voted your best album/favorite album on this site? You've said publicly that you dislike the album, but it looks like people really dig it.
  12. when is the drop date for this record? I heard it was pushed back.
  13. The Primus DVD accompanying the "Animals should not..." CD is great - better than the Cd, though that's growing on me now too - I recommend you check that out too. Lots of Reeealy old videos, plus a vid from Woodstock 94, where they play "my name is mud" and get pelted with mud from the pit, just like greenday did in the "when I come around" video. Les's reaction is priceless.
  14. I'm back, and have the new album in hand. I warn against using "new" to describe it too. Its new in the sense that Its the original lineup for the first time in a looong time, but it came out in 03. It's allright on first listen, thoguh it does sound a little too much like that Oysterhead-hippie crap that Anastasio had Les full of for a while. Not like the old stuff, but one track, "my friend fats" is pretty cool. It's a bit spacier than the old stuff. I've yet to watch the accompanying DVD though. I'll let you know.

The reputation is kind of the reason I ask - how the hell does that happen? How did LJ become the teenie-bopper blog site? Jeez.

Have you ever used Livejournal? I find it to be great, but everyone seems to love BlogSpot. What is the difference, i wonder?
  17. EDIT - I don't know why everything I try to post today ends up getting posted twice. If I were to try to do it intentionally, I couldn't, i'm sure. Sorry again, feel free to nuke either of these.
  18. Make Trade Fair is a great ideal to strive for, but it doesn't address the endemic problems within developing countries themselves. In doing so, it falls into the same trap as so many other theories, which blame the problems for poverty solely on the developed North. While I agree that such things are indeed part of the problem, it oversimplifies the problem, and it is always is far to convienant for me to simply blame developed countries for poverty issues, while ignoring internal problems. People use agriculture as the example - if the USA dropped all subsidies and tarriffs, the problem would be solved. Now explain to me how only an extra 300 million people buying carrots from burkina faso (or wherever) will erase poverty in the third world.
  19. Primus is, I think, one of the best bands out there, ever. Aside from the obvious fact that Les Claypool is an amazing bass player, their two best albums "Sailing The Seas of Cheese" and "Frizzle Fry" are islands of originality. No one sounds like Primus, save a select few that came after. Incubus' first album reeks of Primus. Their new[ish] DVD, "Hallucino-Genetics" is spectacular, and I'm going to pick up their latest Audio recording today ("Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People"). Does anyone have it already? How is it? I'm just getting back into them, and I forgot how good they really are.

    Blogging

Did the Mblog, back in its heyday, inspire anyone here to start a blog of their own? I really wanted to try it (since I knew that everyone and their dog had one already), and discovered that A) it's really easy and B ) there are lots of sites out there willing to host you. I dislike most of the blogs out there that are all "oh, my boyfriend is such an ass", or "today i'm feeling...cautious/hungry/playful". Mine is very much modeled on Mr. Good's - something I'm not ashamed to admit. Has anyone else started a Blog of their own after discovering how good they Could be, or if not, what is your opinion of bloggers? (Apologies if this thread is in the wrong spot. My blog link is below. Mblog fans, don't bother to call me unoriginal - thats one of the most unoriginal things you could say.)
  21. It is holly McNarland, she's done other vocals for matt in the past.
  22. A Crim student once asked me what the only crime was that if you committed it successfully, you couldn't be arrested. The correct answer was suicide. My answer was Evading Arrest. Left to think it over, I don't know if my answer was stupid, or brilliant.
  23. Don't know that anyone has seen these videos yet. I'm sure you remember a while ago when matt posted this video on the now-defunct Mblog. http://mediamatters.org/static/video/cc-200412010011.wmv Infuriating, to say the least. Well, we can now take a deep breath in our polite indignation (it knows no bounds). http://www.michaelmoore.com/_media/oreilly5th.mov http://www.michaelmoore.com/_media/Coulter.mov Don't be swayed against the Michael Moore addresses. These are from the CBC's Fifth Estate, where Bob McKeown exposes Bill O'reilly's blatant on-air lies, and hands Ann Coulter's ass to her in person. Enjoy. There's a more detailed story on my blog, link posed below.
  24. I'm holding my breath for the day that American fatalities in Iraq exceeds the number of people that died on Septemeber 11th 2001. That will be a somber occasion.
  25. I'm not going to entertain this too muuch - my thoughts are here http://www.livejournal.com/users/kayriss/
