This is funny, This guy comes on for the first time and we all just fucking JUMP on him! I mean, he said some dumb shit, but come on! This is just silly. Snap judgements. Welcome to the Bored Sean.

Holee! I drop out of this for a few days and the Nos take the front! These polls are interesting things. I need to think of more interesting Poll topics like this one.

I don't know if this is common knowledge, or if people will even care. The Rock (former wrestler/actor) was just on the daily show, and John Stewart was like "you're in a very exciting new movie, why don't you tell the people what it is". He seemed hesitant, but said that it was called "Doom". [it was really cool, the audience audibly went "oooohhhhh"]As in, the classic computer game. Out in August. Could go either way, I think. The Rock's not as bad as his rep makes him out to be. Good effects, lets hope.

Did people know that John Manley was a Canadian Republican? That was kind of unexpected for me to find out, becasue he was the deputy Prime Minister, and a challenger to Paul Martin coronation (albiet a weak one). Imagine if he'd become PM? Could have been a very different country today...

Haha, it means that they're songs that were recorded, but deemed either not good enough, but most likely just not quite "right" for the album. They do exist, are great songs on their own, the guys just didn't put them on the record for myriad reasons. You can download them off P2P, get them from people, or buy them from the nf store.

How Can You Get On The "mblog Reader Blogs"
Kayriss replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Matthew Good
I was really psyched that matt put my blog up, whether he reads it or not is kind of unimportant. It made me kind of try to keep the content interesting, in case other people stumble onto it, as I checked through some of the others. I'm also reveling in my position near the top of the list, which I pretend has something remotely to do with how much he likes them ;) What's saturnine's blog called? -

I also happen to be a fan of the "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" video by Primus. Its their only video that got any kind of real TV rotation - you know the one, where' they're all dolled up as cowboys in those creepy prostetics. Wicked video, wicked song. -
You had to sing "god save the queen?" Wow, I never had to do that. Even I think that's kind of dumb. What's funny is chances are many of your teachers probably found it as dumb as you did.

I wonder Biggie, do you consider Democracy antiquated? I mean, you must, since it's been around since greek times. Probably longer than the modern constitutional monarcic system? Surely by your logic, it's time for a change on those terms as well? Or maybe you just didn't think about it. There are lots of people who DO think that our kind democracy is antiquated, and that a more modern system (socialist/communist, for the most popular example) is the way to fix it. I don't think that old systems are necessarrily bad ones, and there are a lot of Constitutional Monarchies that are doing just fine. Canada is one of them. As is Great Britain. What I just can not understand is this. What is so bad about Canada's system that you guys want it changed? When people ask me if I'd support Canadian republicanism, I say no, and that I like Canada J u s t T h e W a y I t I s. Don't you?

Ahh yes, but did YOU put the poles up? ;) And i'm not way off here. I think that maybe I can see the point about nationalism being stupid just because of it was where you were born if you live in, say, Botswana, which is near the bottom of some quantifiable numbers. Not that I agree, but I can see where you are coming from. But I'm from a country thats on the top of many of those numbers, so why shouldn't I be nationalistic? And I'm not confusing that word with patriotism, I feel very strongly for a Canadian nationalism that is very much alive today, crunched between American encroachment and Quebec seperatism. Nationalism is an important force that affects the lived lives of billions, especially in this age of globalization that threatens to dissolve borders. I'd argue that nationalism has strengthened in the last 20 years all over the world. And when I made my little rant about the different countries, I think I was thinking a little differently that your interpreting it. It would be pretty stupid to ask a tibetan about chinese nationalism, wouldn't it? I mean, did I not make it clear enough that you would ask an East Timorese person about Timorese nationalism, and not indonesian? Considering it was Timorese nationalism that brought them their nation? Obviously I know that if we ask some "Quebecans" (...) about Canadian nationalism, they'll be less than enthused. Maybe I misread your meaning, or you misread mine, but you're going to have to be a little clearer if i've gone off track here. And the guy that made the crack about Northern Irish fighters not knowing what they're fighting for, that statement really only tells me that YOU don't know what they're fighting for. Oh, and don't ever fucking call me a goddamn emo kid again, I'm neither emo nor a kid. Lets end the personal jabs there, and keep that kind of bullshit out of this otherwise decent discussion. edit - Yes, that did turn out a lot more long-winded than I had expected.

I must say that i'm impressed at how close this poll has been. That might sound funny, considering how its my poll and my side is "losing". But I expected to be one of the only people who voted against republicanism, as I get the general impression that most of the people on here come from a liberal/left/young (pre-university) persuasion, catagories that tend not to recognize the importance of tradition, or the significance of history to a country like Canada. Even if it takes a serious dive against me now, I have to say you've proved me wrong.
-
Why don't you go tell the people in Palestine that Nationalism is stupid. Or East Timor. Or Quebec. Or Tibet. Or Sri Lanka. Or Ache. Or Chiapas. Why don't you go and tell every person in Northern Ireland that what they're fighting for is stupid anyway, and they should just give it up. I'm sure you'll get a warm reception. A nation is not a stupid thing. A Nation is not just a piece of land that you can put a house on and chill for a bit. Nations dictate the quality of life your family will lead, whether you'll be able to get a broken leg fixed, or whether you'll be able to go to school. It pervades every aspect of your life. If tomorrow your house was broken into, it would be representatives of your stupid nation that you would call on your telephone (provided to you by your nation's wealth) to come and find who did it to you. If you don't believe me, go to a different nation, and see how well the same system operates there.

I was Dead on. Don't call our system antiquated. Its present in many countries in the world, and envied in many countries, despite its shortcomings. Oh, and I agree that Prime Ministers don't need to be the only ones on the money, but I think that they should be people who actually made a difference to our country's face. While Gretzky and Suzuki are certainly great canadians (while we remember them now anyway), Hockey is a sporting event, and one thats really only craaaazy popular here. I'm not sure what kind of an ambassador he is. Not to say he's not important to us. And Suzuki would have to become a lot more effective than he is to be on the money, I think. I mean, Canada is still a huge polluter, right? We're still wasteful, and most people would gladly choose their personal comfort over the environment, I think. I sound like i'm belittleing their worth, which I hope I'm not. Thats a seperate arguement that I'm not making now. On the money issue, I'd love to follow the New Zealand example, where they have Sir Edmund Hillary on a bill. Why not Louis Riel, Issac Brock, or General Sir Arthur Currie? He was responsible for Vimy Ridge, one of Canada's proudest moments, and I believe, that moment was more of a unifier than the combined efforts of every media figure combined.

Greatest Video Ever
Kayriss replied to Kayriss's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
Oh yeah, "just" is fantastic. HAs anyone seen that Aphex Twin vid though? I'ne never ever seen it. What's so special about it? -
What would you say is the best video in history? Apparently there was a poll somewhere, and "Hurt" by Johhny Cash is the "best" video ever. I'd have to say i 'm surprised, but when I thought about it, I love it. It's a great video. Thriller was number two, and "come to daddy" by Aphex Twin was 3. I don't even know that one. I'm a big fan of Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer video (cliche, I know), but a buddy of mine is sure that its "Freak on a Leash" by Korn. Bleh. I'm not a fan and neither is he, but I gotta say that was a cool video. What do you think? I apolagize if this thread has been posted before. But I came across something and thought it a good thread topic.

I don't get all the "free us from Britain" stuff. to be freed from something, don't they have to be opressive somehow? Free us from what? free us to DO what? And let's also not forget this very important, indisputable fact: Canada would not be a country without Great Britain. Read that sentance again. Because it is the truth. We would not exist as we do today without Great Britain. So keep that in mind when you point out that we don't owe the UK anything, or that they have nothing to do with us. Which I'm sure you will anyway.

I read that the poor showing for IBAWSIBYM pushed the label to release FILWABI a week afterwords. The problem is that it's embarassing for an artist to have to do this, and They both kind got lumped together - hence may of our not hearing about it. I read that somewhere, though I can't tell you where.

I say hell no. Canada needs to hold on to as many of our old traditions as we can. Selling off bits of Canada has become a national pasttime, and we should take pride in our cultural uniqueness from the Americans.
-
No way should Canada give up its connection to the crown. We're a very young country. We would not exist without our unique history. If we went down the path towards republicanism, what would make us different from the United States? We aren't bound legally to do anything that the Canadian people don't want to do, so whats the point? I hate people who rant about "freeing" commonwealth countries from British affiliation. What is it about long, old traditions that people are so abhorred by? Canada is a nation steeped in old, colourful traditions, and without them, what would we be? Things without history, or traditions, are soulless and empty, and I'd hate to see this country end up like that. The less we can sell ourselves off to the Americans the better.

I can't say that I agree with flag burning being ok. I think that burning a large piece of cloth dyed in ink to make it visually attractive is one thing, but a flag is more than just that. Even if you don't agree with the cause, understand that good, honest people no different than you have gritted their teeth and layed down their lives for what that flag represents (the key word here). That means someone just liek you died at a very young age serving you. People have been singled out and murdered for being from that country, a country represented by that image. When I see Maple Leaf I have the luxury of thinking "thats me", as is with the stars and stripes. If you think a flag is unimportant, read up on the Iraqi flag debacle, and you'll see just how important and nuianced a flag can be. When I hear O Canada, i think people should shut the fuck up becasue that song is representative of the things that make this such a a great place to live. If you want to burn a flag, understand that to people like me, you're commiting as barbarous and disrespectful an act of vandalism as I could can think of, and thinking otherwise is an easy window into seeing what calibre of a person you may be.

Agoraphobe is great. DL blues isn't what you're expecting. Don't get it unless you've got $NF to spare.

Hmm. I remember in Halifax one time they stopped mid song, left the stage (this is about 3 songs in) and were gone for about 40 seconds. They then returned, started playing the same song again as if nothing had happened. No explanation, and it seemed as thoguh it had been rehearsed. I thoguht that was pretty weird.

I remember reading something that said something to the degree of "9/11 made americans see themselves in crystal clairity how the rest of the world sees them" , or, all the hatred that was seen on tv but never quite understood became a reality. Don't know if I'd call hat an upside, or if by "more security" you mean the patriot act, whether I'd see that girls' answer as an "upside".

Did the person who put this up just now know what they were talking about? Do they maybe mean, the missile defence plan? In that case, It seems we're already a part of that too, depending on who you ask.
