Looks Like Vinyl Releases Of Back Catalog Are Coming
adam_777 replied to mrjason's topic in Matthew Good
I agree with everyone who finds Beautiful Midnight to be a sonic revelation. It just seemed different to me, more complete and encompassing, I'm not quite sure. But I loved the way it sounded, to me it was by far the most noticeable difference of this first batch of vinyl records. -
Congrats on kicking smoking! I always just assume the artists have every release ever...like Jimmy Page's basement is full of posters, LP's, vaults of unheard live recordings and cardboard stand ups of Robert Plant with a squeezable lemon. but obviously that isn't the reality haha, That's actually pretty funny you having you buy your own tunes off Itunes to have a listen. Well at least between a few of the members here they have close to everything that's ever been released and most are willing to help out with questions.

complaining about Omissions being omitted sounds like a real first world problem...sorry I couldn't resist -
Looks Like Vinyl Releases Of Back Catalog Are Coming

Really enjoyed the records...to me the sound on Hospital Music didn't seem as dynamic as I had hoped, but really enjoyed the other albums. Thought Ghetto and Beautiful sounded the best. Sat here for a few days just looking at them, still unable to fully accept that a long held dream of mine to have those albums had come true. As for Ghetto not having Omens, yeah it does disappoint. I mean many of the songs on Ghetto are short and could easily have been bumped up to other sides, leaving plenty of room for Omissions, Omissions is just 3:30....if "Haven't Slept in Years was added to record 1 side 2, the runtime of that would be roughly 17 minutes, well within range for a side of vinyl and also well within range for the length of sides on these releases. Omen could then have been added following War is Over and that side would only run 7 seconds longer than it had with Haven't Slept in Years" on there. Too bad! Anyways all things said I am stoaked for these and am excited about what might be involved in the vinyl releases later in the year. Raygun gives me hope for Lo-Fi and Loser Anthems, and I'm assuming Audio, Avalanche and WLRRR would make it. Does anyone think he will rerelease Vancouver-Arrows? I like the idea of In A Coma too, although if its just the greatest hits I'd probably pass. I'd love to get like Rooms with a second album filled with rarities...All Together is a personal favourite, but like Tony said Omissions and other songs like Pony Boy could be added along with things like say Can't Get Shot in the Back...maybe I'm getting carried away with that wishlist. Anyways thanks to Matt for pushing to get these out on Vinyl, its been one of those wishlist things I never thought I'd see, but I'm learning as a Matt Good fan, all good things come to those who are patient. Now about those Beautiful Midnight shows? -

I thought about that and haven't given it a go...it doesn't appear to have grooves so I didn't bother. -
You guys get when he says residence he means taking up residency in some small venue for a brief period of time in a similar vein to an Elton John residency in Las Vegas and that he doesnt literally mean a concert in his residence right?

Matt, appreciate the year summation. Glad to hear you enjoyed the tour as much as we enjoyed watching it. Ive never seen one of your tours get so much love around here and it speaks volumes of the material played and the great skill and commitment of the band. Alaska hwy is something special! As for the show ideas. I love both concepts. The intimate solo shows are cool. Im assuming ticket prices of $100 per show. So $500 for all five shows? Thats alot of money, but id be there. When I get into bands the first thing I always think is "wouldn't it be awesome to hear my favourite album live" and "it'd be awesome to see these guys in a small intimate setting" so hearing you propose both. I am downright ecstatic. Thanks for the vinyl albums and for giving me some incredible live shows to look forward to in 2016. All the best in the New Year Matt and band

Looks Like Vinyl Releases Of Back Catalog Are Coming

I was planning on buying everything so I haven't staggered or cherry picked my purchases. I'm hoping the sales go well, I always worry if they are not as strong as anticipated the second run will get nixed, and I'd hate to see a gem like Audio of Being not get a proper vinyl release. I'm actually pretty stoaked with the first wave, because it didn't include anything I already had, obviously as all of these are first time releases. It means the second wave will be more affordable for me since I'd only need Lo-Fi and Loser Anthems (which I am assuming are coming out if Ray Gun is) Audio of Being, Avalanche and White Light. I can't see another wave not forthcoming, I mean Matt is clearly very fond of Avalanche and I can't see that one not getting released, I know it's out there, but in pretty limited quantities. I hope Avalanche goes with the artwork that the old vinyls had, I always loved the look of that vinyl compared to the cd, although I suppose doing it with the cd's artwork would keep the original Avalanche vinyls a collectors item. Exciting news to wake up to for sure! looks like expected ship date through Matt's store is ten days later than through amazon. It also uses the lingo "will ship on or around" haha -
Thanks Emma, nice job recording that!

Something For Matt For Those Going To The Toronto Shows
adam_777 replied to foats's topic in Matthew Good
Matt mentioned during that 2009 show that CBC was recording it. I asked him about it two years later on the Lights tour and he said the footage had been unusable so nothing came of it. -
Yes Definitely my favourite full band shows dating back to 2008. I wasn't overly impressed in Victoria to open to tour, maybe the band was tired from the blitz of learning all the material, or they were still feeling each other out. but the Nanaimo and Vancouver shows were definitely peaks for me of the many shows I've seen.

Yes I had a feeling this might be in the works when I saw three dates in TO...Ala Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains the Same. Damn lucky Toronto. Hope everyone enjoys the shows!

This is something I never actually thought would come to fruition, just kind of a pipe dream previously. I guess it confirms Hospital Music and Beautiful Midnight. I know Matt wanted to release the entire back catalog is that still the plan? And will everything become available at once, or staggered. Pretty excited to hear more on this! -
Something For Matt For Those Going To The Toronto Shows
adam_777 replied to foats's topic in Matthew Good
One of the issues, I have with most of the footage available of Matt, is that even though some visually is impressive, from an audio perspective they are a huge let down. The reason for this is because most of these shows are random setups. Say for instance the Canada Day footage posted earlier, it's run on someone else's sound system, and I'd assume someone else's sound guy as part of a festival style show. These never give the best results. Shows like the Bravo Concert Hall and Canada Day and other festival shows I've seen are always seriously lacking in sound quality in comparison to actually going to one of Matt's shows. Compared the Massey Hall live cd compared to Bravo Concert Hall (yes from different tours and some different songs, but band was mostly the same and it was only a year apart) and you'll see what I mean about the soundtrack to the footage just seriously lacking. I've yet to see footage of Matt that compared to what it would be like to be at a concert and what it would sound like, and yet I've heard fan recordings which do a better job. I agree with everyone here that the ultimate ideal would just be if there were someway for Matt to film and record one of his own shows, where he plays a setlist more typical of a show and not a shortened hits centric festival show. I think Matt addressed this once before though and just said it wasn't financially feasible. Which if true is disappointing, But understandable. -
Yeah for Girls he was walking right out to the back of the room damn near and singing in a group, or standing up on people's chairs, definitely a live show piece.
-
Haha I'm picturing Matt standing back stage and looking out at the crowd, seeing a few unsavory faces and thinking "To hell with this, I ain't going into that crowd tonight, scratch Girls in Black"
-
Emma, nice covers. Really enjoying listening to them, also kinda cool that you have a few covers up of the new album.

What in the actual hell. That is funny they made a joke out of that wrench, But still, what the hell.
-
I seem to recall there being a few times in Saskatchewan where there was objects thrown. Sad though that one idiot just ruins it for everyone, I mean I get the band not wanting to come back out, it just sucks for all the other thousand people who didn't throw a shoe.

GWS, agreed on your post, it is just bizarre to me that an attention span can be that short changed, but it is the reality. There was a point in time when going to a concert was the ultimate tune out the world because this is exactly where I want to be moment. It has become to many a moment that needs instant sharing and social media updates during the event. Glad you could back me up on that Seattle show, it was absolutely brutal, and yeah, that venue was kind of in the sticks. Took me some time to find it too. Definitely had a "we're not at a Matt Good concert in Canada anymore" feel. That show at the Rio is a good example of a crowd that was obviously there for the music. They were engaged and focused on what was going on on stage and those shows always feel special to me, because you really feel like part of a small community of diehard people who care as much about the artist as you do. Nobody there was trying to act like "The biggest MG fan EVA!" and nobody was trying to act too cool and aloof, they were just unashamedly yet non obnoxiously into the music. Marcella, yes I was talking about the Media Club show from 2012 earlier. Of the 25 Matt Good shows I've seen, it stands way out in front as my favourite show I've been to. A huge part of that of course was Matt being in just a jubilant relaxed mood and clearly enjoying himself, and the great setlist and length of the show. But another major factor was just the crowd. There was great in between songs banter and I never heard a single "shut up and play" entitled comment. When the music played though, everyone was just focused. Seriously look those videos up on youtube, the kids in the front row look like they're in a trance, and that's kind of how I'd describe the show and my feelings about it, somewhat transcendent. I just wish someone had recorded it! When Matt played Running for Home acoustically and started stumbling on the words at the end, the crowd was so on the ball that we immediately took over and finished the song for him. Think about that for a second, a crowd silently listening, But so involved that the second Matt stumbled nearly the entire crowd picked up and sang the rest of a song that wasn't a top 40 hit. That'll make the hairs on your arms stand up. Anyways got a bit off topic there, But it's too bad a few incidents of people in the crowd are overshadowing some great shows. I'm really loving the recordings some of you have made, because I think I prefer the majority of Choatic's songs in their current live form in comparison to the album version.

Something For Matt For Those Going To The Toronto Shows

Yeah watching it over again you can see the cameramen on some of the shots, like during weapon, you can see the guys on stage up close to Jimmy with full on pro cameras. -
People loudly and en mass applauded you guys sitting down? Rock is Dead.

Haha you have to love the couples where one is obviously a diehard and the other is like Oh my God! please don't let their be an encore! I know many couples like to do things together, But if your interests are that divided on that one thing, I feel like you're better off just going on your own. I've been to plenty of shows solo, and I've enjoyed them immensely. I'm the kind of guy who likes to get there early and leave late, I don't consider a concert a "social outing" I go to listen to the music, and have some fun. If I was with someone that was totally not into the band, I'd prefer if they just don't come. If they won't enjoy it, and I'm going to spend my whole night worrying if they are having a good time, then I won't have a good time anyways. I really don't get the people that flip over people standing and having a good time. If you're intention is to sit for the entire concert, choose your seats based on that. I would never pick tenth row center if I wanted to sit. Grab an aisle seat on the side, sit at the back of the main level, or go for anywhere in the balcony. I get annoyed by drunk, unruly fans too, like Matt said at the second Vancouver show "there's no reason to be a dick" But people standing, dancing and singing is hardly being drunk and unruly. As for people that came to the shows to socialize with their friends, again I just don't understand. Go to Starbucks, or pay a five dollar cover at a bar. Why buy a $50 ticket to see a show just to talk loudly and obnoxiously through it about yourself. A few years ago I went down to see Matt on an acoustic tour that started in Seattle. We went to the Seattle and the Portland show, as well as the Vancouver Secret Show that kicked it off. In Van everyone was clearly diehard fans. They would have conversations with Matt in between songs, But everyone just focused when music was being played, it was fantastic. Then in Seattle at the Tractor Tavern, it seemed as though 80% of the crowd came out just to sit at the bar and talk. A small group crowded around the stage, But the socialites in the back by the bar didn't shut up the whole night. Their were times the ruckus was drowning out Matt as he just had the acoustic guitar and his voice. Next night in Portland the crowd was again totally respectful and clearly there to listen to the music. Matt commented on it, thanked the fans and played a song or two extra than he had planned because he appreciated the audience. Glad everyone seems to be enjoying the shows though, whether new comers or veterans of the Matt Good concert experience. Really enjoying reading everyone's comments and reviews as the tour chugs along.
