  1. Every time this happens there are always some smart asses that have that exact same comment. I don't think this is an issue of "putting yourself out there and not expecting the negative". We all put ourselves out there. But I think we are different. We have almost total control over the information about us we put out there. We can write our on version of our history. It's pretty rare that even with someone's real name you can actually turn up any data on the person. Mr. Good has a different position than us. You plug his name into the internet and you can find almost all of the details of his life. It is my understanding from his posts that he often gets emails that are very personal attacks. The kind of attacks that we shield ourselves from by not putting the information out there. I believe there is also a matter of personal pride too. Matt isn't closed about his opinions on subjects, and when people start posting comments on his website that stop being reasonable discourse and become hateful, then that detracts from his message. In the end we should just support that it is his right to run his website how he wants. I've never really got upset because he chose to stop posting, or because he turned of comments, or etc... because he doesn't have to do any of those things. He choses to, and we benefit... even if we don't agree. Also, keep this thread clean...
  2. Since I just got back from a few long haul flights 007 Quantum of Solace 8/10 Basically exactly what I was expecting, so I enjoyed it. The plane had the seduction scene edited out, so I was disappointed in that department. Gran Torino 9/10 Not what I was expecting, but actually really good Milk 8/10 Good movie... can't say much... maybe I just felt awkward watching it on the plane.
  3. I would agree for most of you this isn't really a concern. I just flew to China on business... and let me tell you, they are not laughing about A(H1N1) around here (oh and yes, the A is part of the cool codename). Needless to say, they wouldn't let us off the plane until they had IR scanned for anybody showing a temperature. Anybody with a fever on the aircraft would have caused all of the passengers to have been quarantined for further evaluation. Everyday at the facility I am visiting they take my temperature as part of their sign in procedure. They also require wearing masks when in the not foreigners areas of the building. Anyway, all current signs seem to indicate there is a slight deceleration going on. Let's hope that holds to be true.
  4. In general, the labour laws in Canada guaranty employees many rights once they have passed a probationary period. In Saskatchewan (where I am from) that is 3 months. Once you have been employed for 3 months then an employer can only fire you with cause. In most cases they have to show that they attempted to retrain you before their cause is considered valid. If you are dismissed (unfairly) you have the option to file a complaint with the department of labour. All employes once past 3 months are entitled to 2 weeks of notice (or pay in lieu of notice). Your also entitled to 3 weeks of vacation. It is actually near impossible for employers in Canada (Saskatchewan) to hire employees "at will". Not employment contract (other than a trade union agreement) can supersede the provisions of the Labour Standards Act. Canada has many socialist tendencies. I now work in the US where my employment is "at will". My employer is really good, so I actually get 12 days of vacation. I understand however that not all employers are that nice.
  5. That seems like you should be OK. I'm not sure about the rules for CPP and EI which was my concern over them. You should be able to get a T4 from the employer, and then they actually weren't paying you under the table (just not deducting taxes). If she won't provide a T4, the CRA website indicates that you should contact them if you where included in the businesses return, then the CRA can give you a copy of your T4. If you weren't, then they will investigate the business. Note that T4's don't get issued until closer to tax time (sometime in February is the cutoff for employers to send out T4's. ROE's on the other hand have a much more strict time limit to the day you where terminated). I would suspect if you where actually paying CPP and EI then she had just modified your T1 to indicate to not deduct taxes... which seems unscrupulous and maybe something you should report, but maybe not the same sort of crime. If the CPP and EI was deducted but not actually paid, then your employer is in some trouble and I'm sure the CRA would be interested in your story. In terms of penalties if you claim the income, and pay any tax owing by the deadline (April 30th), then you will have no penalties. prototypepariah: You are correct that he would have earned more... however, it is entirely possible that his deductions would make him owing no tax... so he would have got any withheld tax back anyway. In which case the severance would still be in addition. I think the real loop whole here is that you where actually let go in the probation period, which means the employer can let you go without cause. So all you have really experience is being lied to, and the employer possibly modifying documents you submitted.
  6. Hmmm.... Sorry if my spelling and grammar was sub-par. One of my points wasn't that you shouldn't claim the income, but that if you don't get a T4 then the tax form doesn't have a way for you to claim the income. I mean you can write it as income in step 2 (line 28) of federal. The form doesn't ask you who paid you, and without a T4 you are gunning to get at least a call from, if not an audit from CRA. You most likely should just contact a tax expert and they will tell you how you claim income you don't have proof of. If you filled in a T1 (which is the form you usually fill in), then it is possible that you where on payroll and your employer filled is that you where electing to not have taxes withheld. That is completely legal if your income will not exceed your allowable non-refundable credits. More concerning would be if you had CPP end EI deducted. You might want to contact someone about that, because I think there can be some problems. Especially if you are planning on claiming the income. As I said, I hope there is someone who is more of an expert on it than me. I know quite a bit as I am doing cross boarder taxes this year (but I have expert help also).
  7. What is the difference between an incontinent prostitute and an epileptic corn husker? The corn husker shucks between fits.
  8. I can't give you any concrete information... or anything that I am confident is correct. I hope somebody else can. I think there are a lot of factors here. I'm not sure about the fact you knew you where off the books. You could claim that you weren't aware. If you where off the books, then you won't have the right documentation to claim the income (no T4 or ROE). If you where going to go the route of claiming that you didn't know, you could probably just contact the department of labour and tell them you haven't received an ROE. That would put the owner in a bit of a trouble spot to supply you with one (considering you weren't on payroll). Other than that you could just report the owner for paying you under the table.
  9. The video doesn't work because it is embed disabled. If either a) you just post a link, not an embed link or b) you lazy fuckers click the little up arrow thing and grab the link, put it in a new window, delete the &embed; it will work perfectly. Now stop your whining. Also a is my preferred solution embed links slow shit down.
  10. Thanks for getting that out there. Yes, we here at the NF community certainly don't support that behaviour.
  11. Ah yes, I meant comparatively. "Change of Season" and "Running from Home" are actually two of my favourite songs. But I find that they are only effective in complete dose. When I'm cruising down the street with my windows down and somebody hears "The gun, it makes you look nicer in a bad waaaaaaaa-" it not exactly going to have the effect of "Wow, that's an awesome tune". It might get a "What the fuck was that". Comparatively "Hello Time Bomb" which really lacks the same sort of challenging ideas as "Change of Season", is more likely to get a "That's a pretty good song" response. It would seem that I am an approval seeker when I drive.
  12. My sampling of this show didn't really get me excited about it.
  13. I'm not really sure "Change of Season" is a particularly awesome blasting song... you know, unless you live in a retirement community in Florida "Those damn kids!" The problem is the best blasting songs usually end up being the ones with the least depth.
  14. Yes, I PM'd it to you. Still no skype or VoIP ads.
  15. no, still advertising to meet singles. And Anton, you still haven't added me.
  16. Only because this would be the wrong area of the bored for it... on I kid, Anton probably would shut you all down.
  17. You still haven't added me Anton... and I will remind you of this fact whenever you mention Skype, no matter how off topic it might be. Anton is correct, you do not need a credit card to use skype. You only need to pay them if you want to use Skype-Out which is their landlne dialling feature.

    2009 Tour

We're really pretty powerless to answer that here. We have limited (and by limited I mean no) influence over where tours go.
  19. Errr... I don't know... I did some quests for a crazy guy. That got me to some quests of finding some sweet holy relics, and then I ended up with a group of dedicated followers...
  20. Got talked into buying Burnout Paradise (It's only $20). Actually it's a pretty good game. It has a simple mechanic and just sort of lets you go at it. It's a good break from Oblivion, which doesn't seem as awesome now I have massed a holy order to do my bidding for me... I'm not really sure the game intended you to go that route so early on, but I'm just kinda enjoying it. When I get back to it, I think I'm just going to follow the main arc out of the game.
  21. dude, you have never asked to add me on skype... :'(
  22. Made me think a lot of this one.
  23. Now do it again with pointers!... oh wait, no, Java doesn't support powerful programming constructs like that ;)
  24. It doesn't work for me either... We could all create new accounts and claim to be in America (I actually am, so I wouldn't be lying).
