go to the man in the mountains...it is a long and perilous journey but those who have heard the gentle song have had their lives changed and filled with wonder. the others, those that fell...we dare (Carl)not (Carl) speak (Carl) their (Carl) names (fucking Carl).

Why didn't they just have a spinoff called "Zoey loves Charlie" so it could bomb on it's own instead of pulling the ratings into the gutter.

maybe i can figure out what the fuck is supposed to be going on this time. the comic book, although very good, makes no sense. furthermore, in the movie, they have changed several important characters and events. but i'll go see it opening day. looks great.

Arctic Monkeys
darynalexander replied to ecnarf's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
Suede hadn't put out a record when Brett appeared on the cover of NME with the "Best New Band in Britain" tag line. Arctic Monkeys went the Dane Cook route to success and went with online distribution. Much like Suede, the strong majority of album tracks were already available elsewhere. (of course, this is where the comparison ends. Suede is one of the best bands in the last 20 years, IMO. Arctic Monkeys is one of the best bands this week.) I didn't (and wouldn't) say that, but a similar remark you made is what irked me initially. I'd say you're eclectic and that's not a bad thing, either. If you were to call them "London Suede" you wouldn't be. Not all good bands have substance. Sometimes it's as easy as thinking of a style no one else has yet. Arctic Monkeys haven't done this, and I won't contest that. They are imitators who come at you with as many riffs and catchy lyrics as possible. It gets tiresome after a few listens to be filed away until it pops in your head a year later.I think for what they are at least going for, Art Brut does much better (if you'd like to sample them). No, not at all. I didn't appreciate the comment about buying into hype and thinking for yourself, going with the magazines, followed by suggestions I already own and have owned for quite some time. The fact that you don't like it is fine with me. Couldn't care less. The fact that you suggest that anyone who does is inferior? Yeah, that bugged me just a tad. I don't think you noticed it by the way your response reads, so my apologies for the harshness, but that's what it was. I am. I can't stand either of them. Arctic Monkeys aren't absolute crap, but I find them more enjoyable than the many other british hype machine acts recently. You hit the nail on the head as far as their song content and style goes. I don't hate you, just didn't like what you said. -

Seriously, though, give me an objective reason why Crash is the best picture of 2005. You can't. i'll give you one as soon as you give me the reason why Brokeback should have one. because all gay people are good looking, apparently.

THe first one. The sequels just couldn't measure up. What is the worst thing you have done to another human being?

I used to. Before it got fucking retarded. edit: shouldn't say that. It's really come back this season, but I stopped watching after John Spencer died and after I heard it was going to be canned. I was hoping they would continue on with a different administration next season.

No no no. Keep that one. It's a good one. I wish I had it. Trust me, you'll want that back at some point.

Arctic Monkeys
darynalexander replied to ecnarf's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
Suede, Pulp, and Blur were media phenomenons and I'm sure inexperienced fellows such as yourself were saying things like that back then, too. You've obviously not listened to any of them as they sound nothing like Arctic Monkeys and haven't had substance since Dog Man Star, Different Class, and Parklife. The fact that you put legendary brit pop names next to amateur newcomers SCREAMS "Look at me, I'm eclectic!" I've seen it a million times. Gets old. You have the album, yet criticize those that have the album? Or you haven't listened to a note and you just don't want us to know your mutant power of being able to pick up audio signals with your enormous brain for fear we will turn you in to government authorities and your gift will be exploited for cruel intentions. Damnit, I get so damn tired of these self-righteous posts that are more conformist than the bands they criticize. It's more derivative than the Arctic Monkeys could ever be. I imagine I'm sitting at a restaurant and instead of ordering food, you order music. And then there are these waiters who don't actually work there but come up to refill your glass anyway with their own urine. edit: Now I'm off to listen to The Pixies, Death Cab For Cutie, The Smiths (The Queen Is Dead), and The Cure (Bloodflowers is the best!!!), and Straylight Run. Am I speaking your language now, Susan? -
I have a fear of stores with lots of used and vintage things in them.

I'm listening to it now and I am surprised at how good the thing is. I think this is one case where the british hype machine isn't entirely wrong. -
I think you are right, even though I didn't find Stewart funny. I laughed my ass off at Ben Stiller's bit, but no one in the audience did. When he said, "This is blowing Spielberg's mind!", they panned over to him and he very dryly mouthed, "No it isn't." Hollywood has the personality of a roof shingle.

Visitsed The Canadian War Museum In Ottawa
darynalexander replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Open Discussion
I vote we rename the thread "My Canadian War Museum is Huge" and see how many replies it gets. I wish we had places like that here in the U.S. Hitler's car? That whole place would've made my spine tingle. Thanks for the information. When I go (flee) to Canada, I will visit. If you're ever in New York, I suggest going to the American Museum of Natural History at least once. They usually have a cool exhibit you can see (this month, it was Darwin). -

jesus, he was! that is the sign of a good actor, right there. I've seen almost all of those and the only thing I ever noticed him in was twister and the big lebowski.

Jon Stewart was painful to watch. I kept wishing Joaquin Phoenix would win but knew it wasn't going to happen. What movie had Hoffman actually starred in besides Capote? I can't think of him in anything with more than a minor role.
