Quebec A "nation Within Canada"
no yu begin wher i end replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
I think what Harper means by "nation" is the actual political definition: essentially Quebec is its own distinct culture and society (Charlottetown Accord, anyone?). Quebec wants to be a state, if I'm not mistaken. Most people use state and nation interchangably. -
No, the people are fine. The problem with Winnipeg is the mosquitos, the extreme cold, the crappy roads, the idiot kids who kill people (but apparently don't know better), the urban sprawl, the transit system, the hustlers, the cyclists and lack of bike paths... I once saw a hot Asian girl with big tits. It was like an early Christmas present.

Take psychology at U of M. It's where the sensory deprivation techniques used by the CIA and passed on to tin pot dictators were developed, with financial support from the US and Britain.

Agreed. Kudos. ;)

Gawd, I was in Phoenix for my cousin's wedding last November, and I tried watching his show. I didn't last 5 minutes. It was just after he had a show where he basically said it was ok for terrorists to attack San Francisco, because they passed a law forbidding military recruiters at schools. Asshole.

Fated. Nice and complex, I think.

Rumsfeld Quits
no yu begin wher i end replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
Yeah, that's what I meant to say originally. You don't get much higher than Secretary of Defence. Also, I think his leaving highlights the Democrats winning, because maybe he was somewhat afraid of what they'd put him through if he was still in power. Otherwise, why put off his dismissal until after the election, when just about everyone has wanted his head for the past year or so? -

Rumsfeld Quits
no yu begin wher i end replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
Rumsfeld as fall guy? He was the guy. Of course he'll take his fair share of the fall. I wouldn't be surprised if the Democrats hauled his ass in front of a grand jury. I also remember reading a while back that if Dems took the House, they'd begin impeachment hearings. It'll be interesting to hear what he has to say now that he's not in the Bush Administration's employment. -
Democrats Take The House
no yu begin wher i end replied to mself084's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
The only independent in the Senate is Joe Lieberman, who ran despite losing the Democratic primary (sour grapes, anyone?). He has a fairly liberal voting record, so I'd expect him to side with the Dems more often than the GOP on most issues. I don't think party dicipline in the States is as rigourous as it is in Canada, although most Members will toe the party line. In some of the votes I've read about, there's a list of Reps. or Senators who voted for or against a bill or law, and they tend to be bipartisan to a degree. However, try reading about Tom Delay and how the GOP leadership in the House extended what was supposed to be a 15 minute voting period for medicare plan by a couple hours while they hunted down Republicans who had abstained (this included going into the coatroom to smoke out abstainers, as well as threatening the political futures of other party members and their family members who had political ambitions). Rolling Stone had a great cover story on this recently. PS: I know this isn't a 100% confirmation, but... -
Rumsfeld Quits

Yeah, maybe Bush might actually be trying to reach across the aisle for once, by accepting his resignation. Rumsfeld submitted a resignation after the Abu Ghraib scandal, but it was never accepted by Bush. Apparently, this also makes Cheney vulnerable, too. Bush can't fire him, but he can resign (Andrew Sullivan on The Hour earlier tonight). I guess because they had each other's backs and were pretty complicit in Iraq. -
Democrats Take The House

Agreed. With the independents, the Senate is split right in 2. Does anyone know what this will mean for its functionality? What happens if they end up voting in draws? The vice president casts the tie-breaking vote. Hmmz...damn you Kos! http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006//pages/re...s/MT/index.html http://edition.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages...ults/states/VA/ According to CNN (which I stayed up until 2 AM watching, cuz I'm cool like that), the state of Virginia will pay for a recount if requested if the margin between candidates is less than 1%. Right now the margin between Allen and Webb is ~ 0.3%. I doubt Allen would challenge the results, though, since it's pretty hard to make up a 7000 vote deficit in a recount, and there's always the possibility of Webb getting more votes (as was the case with the Virginia Attorney General race last year, where the original vote margin was 327, but after a recount was 370 in favour of the original winner - the Republican, who was an advisor to the Allen campaign). But yeah, I guess I was a little hasty. A boy can dream, can't he? -

I didn't know we could use characters from a book. In that case I'd meet Santa Claus. I would also go back and meet Mitch Hedberg and I'd kill this guy before he started acting. The Canadian Tire Guy used to play saxophone in a band with my high school band teacher. Apparently, he would play solos while lying on his back.
