Dan and Rabbit both make valid points. Acknowledging your prejudices is the beginning of growing beyond them. I don't agree that prejudice is a useful tool. Let's not confuse prejudice with a healthy sense of awareness. I'm very aware when a group of men are near speaking rudely or loudly, no matter what color. I'm very aware when police cars are near when I'm driving. Doesn't mean I'm prejudiced...it means I'm aware.

Dan, that's how I see it. I'm black and live and work in a predominately white areas. My girlfriend lives and works in a predominately white state. I'll be honest, even I notice when other people of color are around. I notice with the thought of, "wow I'm not the only one." We always notice things different about those around us. It's the reaction that counts. Ladies that clutch their handbags, even though the person of color who is walking by them, is wearing an Armani suit...sadly that kind of shit is ingrained.
