Questions For Canadian Bored-ers

I live in the States, where Matt is obviously not that well-known. But just how big is he these days up in Canada? Did his fame peak during the Beautiful Midnight tour, or is he still topping the charts and a big deal up there? Has his fan base shrunk? It's hard to gauge his level of fame living in the U.S.

I don't think his fan base has shrunk at all.

Those of us who are big fans have always been and will remain big fans.

But he's not so big that when he goes outside a crowd gathers.

I would say the majority of people here know who he is.. And he still gets played on rock radio as much as he ever did... Well, maybe a bit less...

But I ran into my aunt at a MG show last year, so.. He's appealing to all sorts of people.

I think he gained a huge fan base who are just die-hard loyal and seriously love his music. It seems that his fan base is still getting bigger just not as fast as before. For example i guy i use to work with i gave him a CD to borrow (Avalanche) and now he is hooked and has gone with me to a couple of concerts.

I think hes weeding out his fan base. With the new your setup and whatnot, I think you are going to see the die hards sticking around, and the hellotimebombers leaving the scene. But I believe he is attracting a new type of fan too, one who is into more 'meaningful' music

I don't think he has as many fans as before. I think his loyal fans are still around, but the others who just liked hello timebomb aren't into his new style of music. But yes, he is attracting new fans, but I can't see him having more of a following now than he did before when Beautiful Midnight came out.

I think his music was played on the radio more frequently before than now as well.

I was not into Matt until the last few years so I don't really know just how big he was. He is definitly getting new fans as I have gotten many friends into his music. As people above said, alot of the hellotimebomers have gone away but he still has a large fan base even over here in Ontario.

he gets played alot on radio up here in ontario at least.. i remember the other day i was listeing to the radio and one station was playing its been awhile since i was your man, and the other station was playing indestrucible.. i think for the most part canada knows who he is..all of my friends at least "knew" who he was..of course know they "know" who he is

as far as the popular music scene is concerned (i.e. the muchmusic [canadian mtv] scene) his popularity has vastly shrunk since beautiful midnight.

however, those of us who got really into matt's music back then have stayed into it since.

If you want to guage his drop in popularity, just look at his album sales. In A Coma wasn't even a blip on the popular music radar, and it was intended to be his foray back into commercial music.

And WLRRR had plenty of radio friendly tracks on it, it was just marketed horribly and the two videos he did put out were terrible. So saying that he's progressed into making more 'meaningful music' or something avant garde sonically is a pretty bullshit excuse (Hello Time Bomb is a great rock song, and a great deal better than all of the 'straight up rock' tracks on WLRRR).

His old music is still played on the radio, but he has about 1/10th of the fanbase he once had. That said, he knows this and I don't think he cares. He's been there, done that.

^^ I don't think that many of his solo albums were marketed well... The last major CD release thing that went down was a middle of the night meet and greet for Audio Of Being. And I honestly don't think that that sort of thing is MG's cup of tea.

But still...

In the words of MG himself.

The truth is not radio friendly espionage.

His popularity did spike again with the release of Avalanche, but it was mainly here in Canada.

I think my appeal for Matt would be really low if he had a massive amount of fans and if he was all over Much Music and radio stations. It's la treat when I do see or hear him because it doesn't happen often.

Matthew Good's name is recognized, because of the Matthew Good Band moniker, but is he famous, or some Canadian form thereof? No. WLRRR only shipped 50, 000 copies, good enough for gold status, his last Triple Platinum record was BM, which went Gold in 8 hours, it took WLRRR significantly longer to do the same.

I think the marketing for In A Coma was alright...it could be better.

I work in Advertising, so I tend to skip overs ads in or on Media.

I don't read too many magazines, I have a dedicated 20-30 hours per week that I mostly watch only the same TV Shows week-to-week, none on Music stations, and I don't listen to the radio very often. Even so, I still saw at least 1020 ads before the CD was out and they are still promoting it up to now.

The retailers have also been supportive with posters and spots in flyer listings or ads.

Yeah, maybe it's better that all of the hello time bombers have left the fan base. I just don't want Matt to succumb to the pressures of the industry to sell more records and eventually give up this gig. Hope he continues to remember he does have the most loyal fan base around. And while it may not be huge numbers, he needs to keep making records for us and the sake of the art.

He peaked with beautiful midnight no doubt. But he's still very well known and gets lots of play time on the radio and his new videos get on MuchMusic...just hasn't had a breakout song in a awhile.

Ya, but the HTBers never bought/buy the albums, they just show up at the concerts and expect it to be '99 still.

Yeah, he doesn't get as much press as back in the Beautiful Midnight days, doesn't get featured on Much and such (heh), but he's definitely still here, known, and played. I don't know too many young Canadians who haven't heard of Matthew Good.

A lot of people I know have never heard of Matthew Good

although i saw a car in surrey have the "I hear Matt Good's a real asshole" bumper sticker

Last of the Ghetto Astronaugts, Audio of Being, White Light Rock and Roll Review and Avalanche went gold.

Underdogs and Beautiful Midnight were 2X Platnium
