Who Gets Your Vote Oct. 14th?
borntohula replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
right now i'm torn between voting strategically, or for the party who i feel would benefit the most from my $2 or however much they receive w/ each vote. -
what do you think when bands improvise? either on recording or in a live setting. do you have a preference? is it wankery/showing off? or is it dignified, and a sign of artistry? is there a time and place for it?

Lou Reed

eric, in retrospect i probably would've agreed with you on most of what you've written here, but after slowly having been exploring the VU catalogue as well as reed's i'd have to say that his early solo stuff is a bit overrated. transformer is solid, but it should not be understated that it took the hands of david bowie and mick ronson to really get reed at the top of his game again. also, i'm a bit bothered by the fact that reed seems to be exploiting his more "raunchy" side here because he knows it'll get a rise out of people. in VU, particularly on songs like "heroin" or "i'm waiting for the man," he was unrelenting with his observations of drug use and sexuality, but it had a rawness to it. because transformer is so "glam" it's hard to tell when he's being sincere or not, as well as his lyrics about drugs and sex don't have the same kind of impact because they're not coupled with equally-as-compelling music. rock n roll animal is a great, albeit, short live set that manages to reinterpret the old VU songs into very energetic, stadium-suitable numbers. it rocks hard, and does it very well. my one complaint though is that it's sad to see reed play a set of primarily VU material in 1974, by which point he had already released 3 solo albums. it's like he's admitting to us that he knows his own work is mediocre in comparison to his songwriting in VU. that said, loaded and the velvet underground & nico are the best examples of his songwriting during that period, and i feel like white light/white heat is the best VU album. it's the most complete; the one where they all gel so very well and don't have warhol looking over their shoulders constantly. nor do they have to "give" songs to nico. -

i don't understand why my asking for some sort of elaboration on his feelings beyond a mere "they're boring" is problematic to you. had he just said that he liked oasis better, that'd be fine. but he said blur were boring and not knowing what he meant by that or why, i pushed for elaboration. simple. it bothers me when people have opinions, and can't even articulate why they have them. i'd call that a cop-out on a music forum. or laziness. i said that oasis fans only listen out of habit because there's no way anyone could listen to something so obnoxious and humourless unless they had listened to it first when they were 11. what do they do that's so exciting? what's "fresh" by oasis standards? copying t.rex licks instead of beatles ones? i've always thought the dynamic between the bros. gallagher has always overshadowed their actual output. plus they just don't seem to be all that consistent. by your own admission (in another thread), i'm pretty sure you stated that the bsides from their older days are actually stronger than their output now. which i would definitely agree with. they're a decent singles band, but they honestly have not made a solid album in more than a decade. don't get me wrong, they have their place, but just not in my record collection. i think you misunderstood what i said. what i was trying to get at was that damon was just 1/4th of the creativity in blur, and look at all the different directions he's gone in, and been successful at. i wasn't citing him as an example for lack of creativity. sure, blur started out as britpop, even a little shoegazy, but they never let that box them in. to me, blur are by far one of the more creative bands from their time. just the way in which they reconciled their influences is reason enough to exempt them from ever being cited as "boring." oasis are the antithesis of experimentation, and i'd think that they'd be the first to admit that. -

i think they're a bit overrated, but i don't mind some of their stuff. double-albums are too bloated for me, so i really think they had hit their peak prior to making mellon collie. after that, they were hit-and-miss and overblown. still though, they represent billy corgan's songwriting at its best. anything he's done after their break-up (including the latest pumpkins album) has been hugely disappointing. i don't have a favourite album, but i do like machina II a lot. it was a nice, yet strange way to end things and makes up for the abomination that was machina I. -

boring? because? i can see how someone might think that oasis are boring, especially since people only seem to listen to them because of habit (and hope that they will somehow match the success, energy, and creativity that they had a decade ago). but blur? damon albarn has more musical ambition than any of the (rotating) members of oasis combined, and he's just a 1/4 of blur. sure, you could commend oasis' efforts for plodding through the same style & sound they've been at since day one, because it's what they do best, but that to me is far more boring than trying to do things differently, at the cost of isolating fans in the process. if you're going to say something disparaging about a band, you should at least substantiate it so we can actually discuss your point and not just end the conversation with it. -

ba-dum-bum. i have only worked in food service, and only ever had two jobs. i'd say the worst of the two was mcdonalds, just because i hate people and it made me hate people even more. particularly, hungry, gluttonous ones who couldnt understand why their order of 5 mc chicken sandwiches wasn't being made "fast enough." it was my first job though and it taught me a lot, so i don't hate all of it... but i'd never go back.

but he said he was prone to accidents with the zipper, right? so that would lead me to assume that he unbuttons his pants, and then brings his wang out over top of the waistband of his boxers. secondly, what's with you people and doing that? is the button on your boxers really that difficult to open?

wait, so you drop trou to pee? even in public washrooms? that seems like too much work for me. but if you're doing to save yourself from an incident, thats understandable i guess. i've seen people do that in public washrooms before, but it always seems like overkill.

i am an english major and i've come to this conclusion: don't you have anything better to do with your time? i'm sure there are better, and more permanent examples out there of how the internet is changing the english language than this. first of all, the example you've given is something that is exclusive to the internet only, and is still written properly aside from the sneaky fact that the company's name starts with "my." wow. good eye. because it's a name of a company, i'm very certain that this won't have any lasting effects on the english language.
