How is this even comparable to a lava lamp? A lava lamp uses the extremely simple physics of convection while a non-polar substance (wax) remains separated from the extremely polar water. This, on the other hand, uses UV strobe lights and a water-fluorescein solution in perfect timing to make it appear as though a goddamned drop of water is staying perfectly still. AND YOU CAN POKE THE DROP OF WATER AND THE FORM STAYS STILL AS WELL! It's relatively simple to build a lava lamp, but you try buildling, from scratch, one of them time fountains. Wow. There's not anything in there that I don't agree with. Particularly, scholarships for students with financial need. Making university affordable to low-income students will have a huge effect on the current trend of class stratification.

Ok, say hypothetically university becomes free... are u saying its free for everyone, or free for those who want to work hard and appreciate it? If it IS free for everyone, how is it affordable? Anddddd... GO! Was that a rhetorical question? "If it's free, how is it affordable?" The question is not whether it's free for everyone, but whether it is worth something to everyone. If the system is rigorous, then only students who work hard and want to get their diploma will achieve one. Even if they didn't get stellar marks because of how hard the program is, simply having that piece of paper proves that they worked for it, which might counteract the effect of too many people owning university degrees leading to a university degree becoming devalued.

Well, I thought English was arts and humanities, but "typical" for social science students around here is sleeping in until 1:00 because classes don't start until 2:30. Or not doing any homework at all until today, like my roommate.

It's funny because you think I think I actually know the whole university experience. What point have I been debating so far in this thread? It is harder to get into a science or engineering program than a social science/arts and humanities program. And, for the most part, a typical science/engineering program consists of more work than a typical social sci/arts and humanities program. All these stupid straw men techniques about "What about this module that requires a lot of work? is a goddamned EXECEPTION and should be treated as such.

This ties into the degree thread in open discussion: I think the high school comparison only applies to certain types of degrees from certain types of schools. If you're in a degree that required a high level of achievement in high school (this varies according to the faculty and school you were in), the weight it carries isn't necessarily lost just because a lot of people have university degrees. High school diplomas are truly one size fits all, and graduating with a 95 percent average taking all the hardest courses does not differentiate you from someone who took the easiest courses possible and graduated with a 51% average. University degrees differentiate themselves by the name of the school and the faculty you were in. An English degree from Lakehead isn't the same an an engineering degree from the University of Waterloo.

Lauren, I took grade 12 english just like you did. In fact, everyone who has an OSSD took grade 12 english. I've written my fair share of essays. Now, go learn the effects of adding various ions has to a pH of an aqueous solution. And how to derive a secondary quadratic equation. And the shapes and bonding properties of various orbitals, and how Carbon hybridizes its four bonding orbitals to have a bonding capacity of 4. P.S. I got an 87 in grade 12 university English, and had an 85 average for the six courses I submitted to the universities. EDIT: No, a 78 isn't bad at all and I won't knock it, considering my averages used to be in the low 70's in grade 9 and 10. However, you just said you earned that average "without trying". Yet before you said that you worked as hard in English as I did in math or science. Now, being big on math and science, I like to use logic. A lot. Perhaps you should give it a try.
