Canada does, indeed, have troops in Iraq, a small handfull that are on an exchange program with American / British soldiers. This doesn't constitute Canadian political or military support for the war, though. And in Iraq, the casualty figures are 20,000 +, not 10,000+.

I would have watched it had they showed more of the London performances, solely for the musical content. Come on, CTV didn't even so much as show Pink Floyd's entire set. I also would have liked to have seen more of Paul McCartney and The Who. Overall, though, I didn't watch it. I think it's crassly commercial and most of the artists within are only there for the cheap publicity / making themselves look good. I mean, when was the last time that Simple Plan gave a rat's ass about anything but themselves?

I think European and South American countries are a little bit more Christian than Canada, especially Italy. Perhaps we ought to help Al-Qaeda with their fact-checking. Besides that, what would be the point in attacking Canada? If you don't give people a reason to attack, they won't. We didn't join the war in Iraq, they likely have higher priorities. Besides that, we can't be afraid. We can't go around screaming that the sky is falling, or else we will become like those idiot rednecks who think we should ban islam and send all arabic peoples back to the middle east. Try telling that to thirteen year old girls in Utah who are being forced to marry, have sex with and bear children for their uncles. I have no problem with the practice of polygamy... if three or four people want to live together and have a mutual relationship, then it's their life and not mine. But the problem is that the majority of polygamy as we hear of it in the news is the Mormon kind of polygamy, where one man has a boatload of wives, all within one community, which more often than not leads to incest, and the resulting genetic diseases show up in children. Although I don't think there should be polygamous marriages. People can just live together in a house and make out all they want without getting the state involved (imagine the possibility of, say, hundreds of people getting married). But I do think that people should be allowed to transfer the powers of spouse to any individual(s) of their choosing (that is, hospital visitation rights, the ability to choose to "pull the plug", etc).

I don't find gay marriage to be a human rights issue, per se. Amnesty International has better things to do than petition governments to legalize same-sex marriage when they could be petitioning governments for the fair treatment of prisoners and investigations into allegations of torture. Nonetheless, it is an issue of minority rights, and Paul Martin is right in saying that we can't cherry-pick rights.
