From the Criminal Code of Canada: (2) Notwithstanding subsection (1), where an accused is charged with an offence under section 151 or 152, subsection 173(2) or section 271 in respect of a complainant who is twelve years of age or more but under the age of fourteen years, it is not a defence that the complainant consented to the activity that forms the subject-matter of the charge unless the accused (a) is twelve years of age or more but under the age of sixteen years; (b) is less than two years older than the complainant; and © is neither in a position of trust or authority towards the complainant nor is a person with whom the complainant is in a relationship of dependency. So, in other words, if the victim is between 12 and 14, and the suspect is over 16, then any sex is illegal. If the victim is under 12 (which I assume most victims of pedophiles are), then the crime is reclassified to something worse. Raising the age to 16 won't make pedophilia any more difficult. I personally don't buy Harper's idea. If he wants to keep Canada from becoming a "haven for peophiles", then tougher sentences are required. I think this is just an aspect of his socially conservative agenda. Not to say, however, that having an age of consent of 16 is entirely a bad thing. Great Britain, for example, is extremely liberal about sex (see: www.bbc.co.uk/teens for example, probably nsfw) and its age of consent is 16. And if you read that site I just linked to, you'll see that all authorities encourage kids to wait until they're 16 to have sex so that it's all above the law. But I just don't see how raising the age of consent will give pedophiles a more difficult time. I'm also glad to see that there will be clauses allowing young people to get it on. In New Mexico and several other states, ALL sexual conduct between people under 16 is considered illegal, and all professionals (i.e. counsellors, psychologists, etc) have to report any such suspected activity to proper authorities. The attorney general has even gone so far as to subpoena abortion records of girls under 16 to track down what he is calling "abuse". However, just to make the point, he's not going after live birth records of girls under 16, which proves the shallow hypocrisy; going after "abuse" that ends in abortion, but not in live birth. That's clearly an example of operating a socially conservative agenda. As it stands, I'm not overly concerned about what Harper's doing. There's clearly no harm being done and what's important is that any sexual contact (which, in the case of New Mexico, extended so far as to snogging) is considered a crime whenever someone under the age of 16 is involved. But I'm not entirely convinced as to how raising the age will discourage pedophilia.

I'd prefer a convertible over a hardtop any day (except perhaps for saving weight + easier to install roll cage = probably better for track racing), and the Boxster costs considerably less than the Cayman. EDIT: You could, if you were so inclined, fit a removable roof rack to the top of the Cayman. Fact: There's a Porsche Cayman with a roof rack with a v. expensive bike pictured in a brochure for Thule rack systems sitting in my kitchen right now.

Of course I don't agree with trying to offend Muslims, but remember what Voltaire said of free speech - "I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Actually, I think those newspapers are right to reprint the comic. They are standing up for free speech - they're saying "Think what you want of those cartoons, but we are independent and we are not going to be censored." I think the worst thing about this story is that the Danish cleric who had originally brought the cartoons to attention took the original cartoon and then added other cartoons that weren't even printed in the Danish paper in the first place and told everyone what a bunch of jackasses the Danes are. I also don't understand the boycott of Danish products and the assaults on Danish embassies. You can't tell me people in the Arab world don't know that, in the West, media is independent of government. Does the average American deserve to die or suffer death threats because of something printed in the New York Times? No. I don't really agree with the original cartoon, but that isn't the point. The real definition of free speech is "I do not agree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it." Agree or not with the cartoons, the newspaper that originally printed it and the other newspapers reprinting it out of solidarity are not out of line here. They, as private businesses, have the right to do whatever they want within the bounds of the law. The last time I checked, kidnapping people at European embassies and throwing rocks at buildings with intent to cause damage wasn't legal. We had a discussion about this in religion class. Things haven't changed much since kindergarten, but everyone seemed to come down on the side of the people that were offended. Even my teacher used the argument that this cartoon is the breaking point for everything that the West has been doing in the Middle East. I pointed out that given the invasion of Iraq, use of white Phosphorus in Iraq, the wall in Palestine, CIA black sites, Guantanamo Bay, people being boiled alive in Uzbekistan all should have been tipping points before some stupid drawing. Teacher said he "understood my logic" but asked me to reconsider. There's no reconsidering. All these people have gone mad about a goddamned picture while seemingly ignoring more important issues. Question: if you walked into a room and saw somebody ramming a flourescent light bulb up your friend's ass and a cartoonist drawing a picture that you found offensive, what would you deal with first? That's not to suggest that Muslims are to be blamed for not protesting all the things I've mentioned above when we here in the West are the perpetrators, but it does make you wonder where people's priorities are. What rational mind decides to kidnap people because they are from a country where a newspaper printed a stupid image they found offensive?
