Well I've been writing songs for 20 years and I've had my share of 'great' songs that were either below average or just plain bad ha ha ha! I actually recorded a 14 song acoustic demo in my early 20's and those 14 songs are just plain bad. There's even one that a proper rip off of Can't Get Shot In The Back and Dusk mixed in the same song . Just ridiculous. That's youth for you! But it helped me evolve as an artist. Now I'm in my mid-30's and I've gathered 5-6 songs that I think are worth putting out. Had I the money to go into a profesional studio I wouldn't even ask this question. That's the only thing I want for now, getting them heard by people. I thought one had to go through a record company but honestly I wish I could do without (and from your answers I guess that's possible). I'll try to plan it out that way but I'll put my demos online in the meantime. I don't think anything I do is great. That's partly why I want to put it out. People around me say it's great but that's in no way objective.

Ha ha ha! I read "Does NOT want to talk with him". I was like "What?!!"

Alright I'm going to try it then. I know I have to be a seed before being a tree but maybe I'm seeing things in a 90's way where you'd send a crappy sounding cassette to a record company who would loan you the funds to go into a studio and you'd record them properly. I guess that's not the way it works anymore (which is fine I'm not complaining mind you :P). I'll get an account and tell you how it goes! Thanks :)

It is sad indeed. The music business in Quebec is a microcosm with the same problem as Canadian music in general. Most non-pop artists (Marie-Mai, Céline Dion and winners of La Voix) will get airplay but that's pretty much it. Then they'll generally fill their quotas with the local classics like old songs from Robert Charlebois, Beau Dommage and others of the sort. Other artists are not generally appreciated by the great public. Is it because they're not getting played or are they not played because they're not appreciated? But it's pretty much the same question as music from the rest of the country. In an ideal world where our so-called bilingual country would actually be bilingual, our Canadian artists, whether they're French or English, would get airplay everywhere in the country. That would be awesome and would help stop Quebec being a world of its own, at least music wise.

Thanks but the songs on that website seem to be well produced and/or recorded in real studios. My songs are in a demo state as I record them in my basement. Even if I do a lot to make them the best quality possible (I have semi-professional tools), I wonder if they belong on that kind of service. I kept them on my SoundCloud, YouTube and BandCamp accounts and recently opened a Patreon account. I've also seen spinnup.com which is owned by Universal but they put your music on services like iTunes and such. Again I'm not comfortable selling my music in their current state.

What do you mean?

Nice one! It's a shame you couldn't Matt in there (or is he just not in the trailer) because he's had a lot to say about the Canadian music scene and what we hear in this trailer pretty much sums up what he says. The MuchMusic bit hit a nerve with me because that's really when I started getting into Canadian bands including Matthew Good (whom I seemed to be the only one in bloody Quebec who was a fan... 'Matthew who?'). I hope the full thing gets released soon!

I don't know if the sames rules apply elsewhere but in Quebec there's also a large percentage of French music that has to be played. French radio stations usually keep those for the night shift and play the (very few) most popular French songs during the day alongside the likes of Rhianna, Kesha, Imagine Dragons and such. Canada sucks when it comes to its self-promotion (because of the inferiority complex that Matt talks about sometimes)... unless you're called Drake or Bieber who, of course, very few know are Canadians (and obviously don't represent Canadian music as such).

And unfortunately he still sings off key a lot. It's a shame. That may be what would have happened had Matt not changed his style. Singers who scream a lot end up not being able to sing properly. Liam Gallagher also comes to mind. Also, I haven't seen any live clips with their new drummer but Jeremy was one of the key elements to OLP (or even Mike for that matter). I'm skeptical.

I live in Quebec so, unfortunately, they stopped playing anything new from Matt after BM. The only place to hear some MG is on CHOM 97.7FM and even they don't play anything that's not from Underdogs or BM. But the Bad Guys Win video was quickly added to Stingray which is nice. I've been looking for Decades on there but nothing yet.

This isn't about the summer show but holy crap where's the rest!!!

This is a pretty good tribute. I agree about Invasion 1 but my biggest surprise is Clare Follett's voice! Bloody hell she's amazing!

I was absolutely shocked by the news... I'm still speechless... -
I believe the Dear San Diego were never archived per se. But if you're interested in his writing, I'm certain some of us can give you the Manifestos from the late 90's early 00's and others. But I don't know if it's allowed (Anton?). That's because Matt actually published a book with them titled At Last There's Nothing Left To Say.

God I love that he's making videos again!

I already loved the song and I find his whole 80's sound for this album interesting. It's a bit slower and less rock than the live version but I like hearing the dynamics. Could this record just come out already? :P

Alright! A new section on mg.org! http://www.matthewgood.org/dear-san-diego/

Did anyone notice the Spotify version is basically the video's audio? Is is the same thing when you buy the track?

Yeah Matt's always been an amazing writer. He might not like his old songs but there are great lyrics on there. He's a great multidisciplinary artist (painting, writing, music) and I would love it if he'd become a writer. If he'd ever retire from music, he would certainly keep writing (because that's what artists do) so I hope he puts them out there!
