  1. When you say they "play slightly better music", does that mean the contestants actually play intruments or...?
  2. It's as much about excuses as it is just plain sensationalism it seems. First, they say to keep kids at home as much as possible because all sorts of creepy pedo's are everywhere, then they say, wait, they're not safe at home either because those videogames they play at home will turn them into addicts, and their music will make them violent, and movies with sex will turn them into promiscuous whores. One is left to wonder, is there really anything the news will deem safe anymore?
  3. Happened to see a few min on the news about the AMA (that's American Medical Association, for you Canadians, etc) considering whether to recognize addiction to videogames as being equivalent to drug or alcohol addiction. It seems to me that a lot of the "signs of addiction" they use to justify such thinking don't always amount to enough to call it a genuine addiction. They say signs include a person getting very angry or frustrated when asked to stop playing, or not enjoying gaming as much as they used to when they first started. At the same time, there are stories of people who play video games so much, they completely fail school and never accomplish anything as a result and crap like that. So, any thoughts?
  4. Heh, excellent work detective... well sort of. There aren't any error messages when I get back on the comp, it's just closed as if it were never running in the first place.
  5. Oddly enough, I found UnRarX minutes after making this thread, but didn't mention it, because I thought some of you would enjoy feeling useful and helpful. Well, now you have another chance. Sometimes I leave certain applications on running for a long time, this is deliberate, so I have disabled the computer's setting that makes it go to sleep after a certain time period, opting instead to have the computer automatically shut it itself off at a certain time using the "Schedule" setting. However, often times, when I return to the comp after having left it alone for hours, but not having it reach the time it's supposed to shut off (not even close) I'll find the applications I deliberately left running have been closed for some reason. For for instance, I leave the computer and the applications running at like 4pm, and the computer is scheduled to shut off at 2am, why is it, when I check back at 6pm, the application I left running is closed? And what do I do to stop it?
  6. Lotion is also used by kings for their waffles, when the waffles are too dry.
  7. I liked 28 Days Later quite a bit, but the previews to the sequel seem like it'll be an ordinary action film, a genre that I like less and less with each passing year.
  8. In terms of acclaim, there wouldn't be a winner among any of those. As for money... I'm gonna guess The Simpsons Movie.
  9. So I've gotten a Mac after 10 years on various MS Windows versions. However, one of things I have't quite figured out is opening RAR archives. I got this unrar thing, and all I get is some sort of command line crap that I don't know much of anything about snd can't seem to accomplish anything with. It seems like such a basic thing, but for some reason a pain to pull off. What ought I to do?
  10. Yes terrible customer service. A recent MSN-Zogby poll revealed that Wal-Mart was #7 on the list of the 10 companies whose service is most likely to be rated poor. The results were: Sprint 40% Bank of America 30% Comcast 30% Time Warner Cable 29% AT&T 26% Citibank 24% Wal-Mart 23% Verizon 22% Wells Fargo 21% DirecTV 20% http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Savin...ame.aspx?page=1
  11. Racism is something that can be seen from so many angles. The one that bothers me a lot is when racism is used as an excuse for things like committing crime. I knew a girl, who honestly believed that the reason her uncle was put into prison for life was because he was black, as opposed to the fact that he was found guilty of a double murder.
  12. I saw the SNL performance as well. I thought it was odd, obnoxious, and not very good.
  13. "The Good Shepherd" I didn't like it that much. They really didn't seem to focus enough on any of the major incidents in his life, and so the whole thing went like it was basically a timeline of events, without getting much into the events. Which is strange given the movie was nearly 3 hours long. Kind of peculiar that a movie can be both too short and too long at the same time.
  14. Despite some of the bad press, BBC came out with an article today:
  15. I think an interesting question is, if someone had killed 30-some people with a knife, would people start talking about knife control outside of a campus campus setting? I highly doubt it. Now I know, you could argue, "if this guy was using a knife, it would be much harder for him to have killed so many people without being tackled or bum-rushed and what not." But I'm talking hypothetically here. But then, just as large numbers of people can be killed by single individuals without firearms, the only difference is it may not all be on the same day. And here's the the thing, a significant portion of murders take place without firearms, and in some countries with strict controls on gun ownership, their non-firearm murder rates actually exceed total murder rates in the USA (gun and non-gun murders per 100,000.) After all, the most prolific serial killer, some fellow from India, is said to have killed over 900 people over some years, using only a fancy rag to strangle victims with.
  16. No, not like stores and what not... they meant double/triple protection for their odds of holding administrative power. It many not be a "good" answer, but it's the one they're providing. My understanding however is that most of the arrests didn't take place until the protesters tried to pass through the police blockade. Odds are, the protesters wanted there to be arrests and such, because it would attract global sympathy for their cause, so there was probably no shortage of provoking.
  17. As the BBC put it (at least I think it was the BBC), the Russian government does it for "double or triple protection."
  18. Actually the topic at hand is whether the West's criticisms of are Russia are fair, so the fact that many other countries do the same thing, and yet these are the countries from which criticism comes, then the conclusion is that the criticisms are probably not fair. It would be like me bashing you for wearing ugly purple pants, if I were also wearing ugly purple pants. Other democratic countries aren't like that, what about the good ol' US of A. They've been taking away all kinds of freedom and attempting to consolidate power as well, no? And looks at the 2000 election, even though it's fact the majority voted for one candidate, the opposite one became president... is that a model of democracy? The fact that current administration is losing a bit of hold is because of massive opposition. In contrast, Russia's current administration is a popular one in Russia, one that most Russians are apparently at least somewhat standing behind. And isn't democracy supposed to be about the will of the people? Sure the West is inclined to be sympathetic towards an "oppressed underdog" but these dissenting parties apparently don't even have 1% of overall public support, and many common Russians believe these protesters are "freaks who are wasting their time" as one young Russian woman interviewed on the matter phrased it. If these movements were popular enough, then there would be no possible outcome other than triumph for them, regardless of the opposition. But the fact of the matter is they are not popular enough, and it would take a hell of a lot for the opposite ever to become the case.
  19. Incidentally, if Russia is undemocratic for their controls on protests, then so are the following nations: NZ Israel S. Korea France Australia South Africa and quite a few other developed, democratic nations. Additionally, how is it one can claim "the Russian police arrested them all" ? If there were several thousand protesters, and between 100 and 200 arrests, clearly most people went home that night. Also, just a few weeks ago, there were anti-war protests here in Portland, and when a group tried to get past the area allowed by police blocking, many of these protesters did end up beaten and arrested. One can criticize Russia all they want because it's on the opposite side of the planet and disconnected, but it's hard to realize for some reason that the same critiques would be spot-on right here in America as well.
  20. Because a call for a coup is civil. It's probably the worst thing that could happen if there's such a change. The nation has barely begun to rise out of the chaos of the collapse of the USSR, and there are calls for the current gov't to collapse also? Yeah, that'll be very productive. Anyone ever seem to notice that a lot of these protest marches are composed largely of Fascists and other political extremists? Yeah, things would be a much better off if these people took Putin's place ;) :
  21. Sure, it's clear that he's made an impact in the world of music, but listening to his performances and what not, he really didn't seem to be all that good at anything he did.
  22. Kate York is quite alright. http://www.myspace.com/KateYork
  23. I think the last little part of that article sort of gives away what Berezovky's issue is. Sure, in the virtual anarchy of the Yeltsin years, he was able to get wealth, influence, etc and act with impunity, now that his priveleges to exploit and rob the country are gone, he's pissed off.
  24. Listening to Slayer can make anyone crazy, them sucking as badly as they do, it's liable to make anyone go utterly mad. But seriously... I would bet, that just like Columbine, it's gonna get politicized, and quickly.
