I completely know what your getting at. I just don't wholly agree hah, as per usual i guess  For one, people, id argue still go to university to get enlightened ( some go just to party, those who can afford it). University has really become the standard for employment, i won't argue there, but is that due to education being more accessible? I am not sure if we can make that argument since we have nothing but our twenty or so years of experience with the education system and we weren't around in the 70's and 80' s ( except on the floor playing with transformers). I'm still not fully convinced of the slippery slope argument that if we were to make education free then a master's would be the new standard and then if we made getting a master's free then a phd would be the new standard. First of all, that argument doesn't really hold weight. One reason for this, is that in say, Engineering, you only really need a B.A. to be one and get a job. A master's degree is basically unneeded unless your already interested in doing research, which is what you'd be doing to get your masters, which is already a totally different type of work then your average engineering firm to begin with. The whole idea of getting a masters and a phd is to push science, and social science further, to add to academia, and unless your already interested in that, there is no need to get a masters or phd. I can't foresee a business wanting all of it's employee's to be academic's as well. Of course, i am speculating here, and that's all we're really doing. I didn't take for granted high school because i was reminded by my parent's pretty well constantly that they were paying for it, and i wasn't getting a very good education ( according to them lol ). I loved going to a lot of the classes that i still choose today to go to in university (anthropology, sociology, law). I'd also argue, that if you want to succeed, since some employer's can ask for GPA's, that you have to sacrifice to do well in university to begin with. I mean even if university were free, you'd still be sacrificing your time with working on hard subjects that demand a lot of your concentration to do well. Instead, school takes a back seat for some students who need to pay rent, pay tuition, etc, and their grades generally reflect that. I had better grades when i didnt work my first year of university(took out loans ) then when i did work in my second. The good work ethic definitely is important, but are we expected to do more then student's were even 40 years ago? I'd submit that some students are, and some students are not, but that doesn't mean that we necessarily have to put a price on education to make our own sense of self worth be valued by ourselves and our would be employers. I also don't necessarily think that making education inaccessible to some will make our education mean more, since some of the most ignorant, and idiotic people will just buy they're way through. Unless they totally and completely flunk out of course even after the probation. But anyway, you get my point lol ;)

I dont recall making a figure of 30 hours? I said that i remember a professor telling me for every hour of school you should do 2 hours of hmwk, so if you go to school 15 hours you will come with 30, but i didnt relate it back to science i just said it evens our pretty well lol. And you just said that it's more like 40 hours of work? i guess there is a ten hour difference, but thats not exactly standardized and i was, and continue to not work out any sort of exhaustive list of work/hours/ etc lol

Quite true the provincial government does not have bombs. What the title is meant to display is the disparity between military spending (which recently has gone quite high)and the increasing university fees in Ontario. We're protesting the war and the tution hike. If money(s) were allocated into subsidizing education or even subsidizing students instead of going to weaponds maybe we wouldnt have a need for our little paper.

Well this is a pretty complex question, some say the media sets the agenda, some think theres collusion between government and media to keep specific issues flooding the airwaves and conveinantly ignoring others. Remember all media on TV has corporate sponsers who have specific political interests so all your seeing is what they want you to see. It's not an easily answered question id suggest, but study the inner workings of the media id suggest reading "Manufacturing consent" by Noam Chomsky, he has fantastic analysis! Fact for the day: roughly 180,000-200,000 Iraqi's have died since the beginning of the conflict.

Jack Layton Is A Good Guy
supercanuk replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
I think one of the reasons why Jack Layton is against the whole Afghanistan war, is the way we are trying to secure the peace. We have sent troops to basically kill the taliban. and the taliban are trying to the Canadian troops any way they can, either through gun battles, road side land mines or suicide bombers. He wants a "traditional" peacekeeping mission, and i am pretty sure those went out the door after the berlin wall came down. also i dont believe that the democratic process will go peaceful or smoothly in the first 20 years of the "new" afghanistan. it isnt something that just happenes over night, look at Russia, they are still having a lot of trouble with it, same with the Ukraine. it will take some time. Nobody's saying it's going to be quick instant good change in Afghanistan, well, sorry Bush's unrealistic rhetoric says so, but anyone who has enough grey matter in their brains know's this whole process is bullshit lol. It takes time but it cannot be forced, forced democracy is the exact inverse of what it's meant to be, which is essentially facism. But yah Jack Layton is living in the past, he's thinking peace keeping in the tradition sense i think we can still do it we just have to go about it in different ways. Also, how do you fight the Taliban when the Karzar government has many members of the Taliban in it? lol again i think we're setting this whole thing up to fail, i'll tell yah in ten years from now there will be " operation enduring freedom part two" ... maybe they can make a movie about lol EDIT: Thanks J for the nice comments ;) we do often agree. -

General's certainly cannot predict how long a war will continue, as far as we can tell at least, and that is basically what we hear in the media. But there can be steps, for example, the first step could be something like securing the country, then maybe allowing grassroots political organizations to run their courses, and keep stability while this happens. Obviously this is going to be a hard job but better the government be decided by the citizens then by the bayonet of our troops/government. Again, we may not agree with their politics or ideology but we really have no right to change it, that's called fascism. And yes, Jack Layton is poll pandering, ive been against this war from the beginning but im not a political voice that anyone really knows, just some obscure university student who has an unhealthy addiction to the media/news. J, amazing post! I don -

hmm, well thanks for the comment but interesting reply. I didn't put the link as a statement of the oil issue in Afghanistan or the innocent people who have died. lol Of course you get death with war. But what i was actually hoping that people would check out is WHO we're supporting. For one, Karzai's government is FILLED with warlords and drug dealers, some of whom, have used mass rape as a strategy in their conflicts domestically. Are these the types of people we want to support? Women's rights have gone down in several respects since the invasion and we can't secure one square km of Afghanistan. I am anti war and I -

I don't think anyone here ( unless they've met him several times and know him) can really say they like him as a person. We only know him in his public political life so really, i dont see how we can "like him as a person" we can like him on his idealogical beliefs, but thats about it. It's great that he's against the Afghan war, but where has he been the past five years? Like every other politician he's biding his time till he thinks he can gain support ( 52% of Canadians would like to see an immediate withdrawal of troops, this of course is in a constant state of flux). Here are some interesting facts i think everyone here should read. -
It's fucking hilarious... i hope you all get the Da Boot references!

the thing about universities is that you don't have to waste time on crap that you don't want to. if you are going into english, there are like 10 different first year english courses you could take. and if you get permission, you can get into second year classes. That said there are

The wobblies kicked ass There would need to be a organized mutual aid network for that to work since a lot of soldiers are are the poor and the desperately poor.
