  8. I'd just like to say that for one, i think this discussion has been more thought out then some MP's in Parliament for this Afghan mission! We definetely all have our own opinions on this, and all of them are totally legitamate. I just want to link you guys to Malalai Joya she is an Afghani MP and quite outspoken about the warlords and drug lords in the current Karzai government. I've said it before i think, but i'll say it again, I just don't know how we can support a mission that supports warlords and druglords? Women certainly should not have to worry about dieing just for going to school, I dont think anyone would even dream of making that argument. However I can't see any long term benefit for the people of Afghanistan if these types of individuals are in office. Will Canada be in the country for ten, fifteen years? I'm not sure if there is the political support for a mission of that length. Already we are seeing low numbers of support, usually in constant state of flux, but generally around 55% support for the mission.. That's not really a huge amount of support, and that could dwindle as it did in the summer when the support for the mission was as low as 45%.. But this deviates from the point, SHOULD we be in their.. Well obviously you all know my stance on this, but i would be willing to see Canada involved, but I want to know the scope of the mission, the perceived length, it's goals, any characteristics which would define a mission, something neither Martin, Chritien, or Harper has done. At this point, what i've heard is basically we are "search and destroying" Taliban onsight, which is pretty insane, because we even gave the Nazi's a trial for their crimes, but these people, whether Taliban or not are summarily killed. Sure if they are fighting we consider them Taliban, no question, but was every German a Nazi? No. They were forced into a situation where if they didn't participate, they were killed. The situation is the same for the Afghani people, so like you said, it's really complicated, and "arms for amnesty" will not cut it. I had recently heard that a mile beside a Canadian forces base people were starving, like literally starving, for want of food. So how do we win the hearts and minds when the Taliban can waltz into the room and be like "hey we'll feed you, just come and fight with us, we're your brothers". Not to mention, that in Afghanistan, i believe it's in Kabul, people get five hours of electricity every second day i believe it is (don't quote me but i can get the exact amount for you) yet, their is a brand new shopping mall, which no Afghani can really afford to shop in, that is run, 24hours a day, 7 days a week. Presumably it's for our troops whenever they have a little off time in Kabul. But still. I mean, i'm sorry, but to win the hearts and minds there cannot be these HUGE contradictions. Probably every battle in the last century has been fought for liberation and freedom. But I can think of only one of these that actually was about freedom, obviously WW2. And even then, commercial, corporate interests made a killing, which they always seem to do in war. Was there a pandora's box opened here? The world is no more safer now with our presence in Afghanistan, in fact, some people think it's far worse. Would it continue to slide if we left Afghanistan? Probably. I am not denying that for one second, but can we live in absolute safety? No. Of course not. Humanity never has and it never will, and if the argument comes down to OUR safety, then we should take a sober look at ourselves and see whose safety for the past century has been disregarded for our own means. Look at the first Gulf War, even the war in Iraq with Britain at the beginning of the century where they were trying to secure oil feilds, how about the cou' done to Iran's democratically elected president in the 70's, how about the U.S. funding and training the Taliban to fight the soviet's in the 80's, how about the Palestine Israel issue, how about our support and continued support of places like Turkey who have a long list of human right's violations to Muslims, these are all actions taken by Western countries who other Western countries supported in doing. I know this is getting beyond the scope of the Afghanistant isue so i will stop here, but it's my belief that these all have a connection. Our actions in the past have definetely effected our current situation and im not totally sold on whether our continued military actions will make this situation any safer, or better, for us, or the middle east. But i think diplomacy can work, and it must, because eventually one side will give in, and I can't see it being the middle east.
  9. I seriously want these drinks!
  10. This movie, America: Freedom to Fascism, i think I have posted about before, but I didn't have a free online version of the film, which is now uploaded on Google and you can get it here. I am dissapointed by the name, I don't like the idea of calling it from freedom to fascism, but im not it's creator so who the hell am I to say anything lol. Anyway, it starts off with a multitude of experts and regular citizens explaining how American's don't actually have a law that requires them to pay Income tax, only the heavy fist of the state which carry's out IRS raid's without the relevant statutes that give them that right. Anyway, so it is a good film, and goes through not only the Income tax issue but a few other issues relevant to a "democratic" country, it's well done and well researched and I think anyone interested in the loss of civil liberties would be interested in watching it, especially if they are American. I know it's a lot of canuk's on NF but a lot of these losses have spread to Canada as well, since the U.S. and Canada have signed onto similiar globalization treaties which scale back our rights ( concerning CAFTA, etc). Unfortuntely, it is an appeal to American patriotism at certain points of the film, but if you can get past those small interjections, overall, worth the time watching it. Some relevant losses to Americans include: Executive order # 10999 Allows the government to take over all modes of transportation. Executive order # 11000 allows the government to mobilize civilians into work brigades under government supervision. Executive order #11921 Provides that the President can declare a state of emergency that is not defined, and Congress cannot review the action for six months. Senate Bill #1873 Allows the government to vaccinate you with untested vaccines against your will.
  11. My sister is named after her... Hmmm... I'd probably meet Marx, Lenin and Trotsky. We'd have a party and invite McCarthy. Then we'd play russian roulette with a semi-automatic (McCarthy would go first of course) Really? thats pretty cool. If i ever have a daughter I want to name her Emma. And i was thinking Liberty, for a middle name. I think that'd be a pretty nice name, Emma Liberty Halliwell.
  12. Id probably want to go talk to Emma Goldman... and then kill Hitler.
  13. Bingo. Although one night on CBC I did see a little bit about the issues stated above in relation to the Arar case, they had a panel of people on for all of half an hour. Hardly the amount of time necessary to even get into the topic let alone have a decent discussion of the issues at hand. I was dissapointed.
  14. haha dude, you're no idiot. I dont think the Canadian citizenry has been properly informed of what has happened, and this could be done on purpose. Because of course, telling Canadian's of their loss of civil liberties helps the terrorists.. don't cha know.. ;) But yah, i dont think anyone really expects to be arrested (except of course maybe the crazies or ones who think they can get away with a crime) but it happens unexpectedly all the time, so watch your backs folks, cause the boy's in blue are commin for you!
  15. I'd really suggest looking at Bill C-34 The anti-terror bill and check out what it's made, i.e. it's spin off's practically. It's no longer so safe to just say " i'm Canadian citizen so im covered" because all kinds of rights have been stripped from Canadian citizens. In relation to what Crusader said, take the Arar scandal, Canadian citizen, deported to Syria. But no doubt there are other Muslims who are Canadian citizens that are on the terror list without the ability to challenge why they are on that list since they are blocked from seeing the evidence against them. This is totally insane in a democractic society, seeing the evidence against you is a BASIC fundamental justice principal that has been shat on and flushed down the toilet. I dont know about you guys, but I dont want to have a lay-over ( because im never going to the states unless im forced) in some American state and be "randomly" searched and then questioned for hours on end. But anyway... important issues, that deserve thoughtful discussion.
  16. I only support banner change if there is Scarlett Johansson. Because Samuel L Jackson being on the banner is pretty f-ing cool, but Scarlett Johansson is Scarlett Johansson. I rest my case.
  17. i dont know what any of this means. nor do i care. You should if you ever get arrested.
  18. Indeed but with the advent of Bill C-34, we too are under tyrannous conditions. The state can now COMPEL you to testify, so throw your right not to testify out the window, they can hold refugee's and non-citizens without charge indefinitely and they have, see the security certificate 5. Also the term "terrorist" is so broadly defined here ( and internationally it seems) that anyone actively engaging their political rights can be labeled a terrorist. All one needs to look at is the West Coast warriors, who, im sure not everyone would agree on their tactics, but whose homes were raided and refused the right to know on what grounds the warrants for the raid's were given. This is a Canadian right, stripped away from Canadian citizens. There is also increased secrecy within the government, our Freedom to Information Act rights are being arbitrarily stripped away. More information is being gathered on us: ( see the creation by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency of a data bank to contain details on foreign air travel of all Canadians. This amendment gave the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency power to obtain information collected by airlines as a result of the Advance Passenger Information/Passenger Name Record Initiative. While it was originally only to keep passenger information for a twenty four hour period, CCRA now confirms the data is being kept for six years. This information can be shared with other countries and security agencies.) I wrote an editorial about this in fact very issue in Canada for the October Agitator (the student newspaper i work for) so i'll post the online copy here if anyone is interested. Anyway, welcome to the dark hole that is oppression. Don't let the boot hit you in face too often.
  19. hahaha same here, i know what you're talking about. They always had this point where they'd momentarily stick, and you had to push them REALLY hard just to get it going again and then by the time you thought your pencil was sharp, it would fuck up the whole lead! WEll that' my experiance with them at least.
  20. Ouch this is hard. Probably Family Guy and Simpsons tied, but Futurama comes up right behind these guys.
  21. Agreed. And surviver is so retarded, im so sick of it! Same shit over and over again!
  22. I have always found the, Guerrilla News Networkto be a fantastic place to start.
  23. According to school i am a decent writer. And I think im fairly good with people. And i have a strange awareness of politics although im thinking of letting that just go the wayside since its totally useless knowledge lol
  24. Here' yah go mate! Cerium is a silvery metallic element, belonging to the lanthanide group. It is used in some rare-earth alloys. It resembles iron in color and luster, but is soft, and both malleable and ductile. It tarnishes readily in the air. Only europium is more reactive than cerium among rare earth elements. Alkali solutions and dilute and concentrated acids attack the metal rapidly. The pure metal is likely to ignite if scratched with a knife. Cerium oxidizes slowly in cold water and rapidly in hot water. Although cerium belongs to chemical elements group called rare earth metals, it is not rare at all. Cerium is available in relatively large quantities (68 ppm in Earth
