What Is...
Ravenous Yam replied to Stu's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
EP (extended play) originally applied to records, but carried over to CD's. An EP is a record that is too long to be a single and too short to be a full album. A B-side is also carried over from records, it is the flip side of a single. The A side had the single (the one intended for the radio) on it, the B side was some other song to take up the other side of the vinyl. -
That's a fucking awesome idea! ecnarf for Environment Minister.

My transfer to SAIT (from UofC) got accepted. That was nice. I finally figured out what I want to do, thus, SAIT. Other than that, 'tis reading week, which is also nice. Plus over the last few days it went from -30C to +5C.

I like spicy food, but, like everything else, in moderation. It really depends on the food.

Claiming all cops are crooked is just absurd. The vast majority are not. And without any cops, the whole world would be a disaster. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to seriously reexamine their worldview. As for the calling cops pigs, whether or not you think it is disrespectful, it is still a bad idea to say it their faces. Why bother? Why antagonize someone for no reason?

I've been skinny my whole life. I have a really high metabolism and it's so far impossible for me to gain any fat. Last time I tested, I had about 8% BF. I have gained quite a bit of muscle recently, though.

Muslim Outrage Against Cartoons Escalates
Ravenous Yam replied to Ravenous Yam's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
I agree with ecnarf. All the blame for this disastrous situation lies with the rioters, not the cartoonists. Perhaps it was an unwise decision to print the cartoons, but they should without a doubt be allowed to. Meanwhile, the situation continues to escalate. Apprently, around 45 people (mostly Christians) were killed by rioters in Nigeria, citing the cartoons (still?) as the cause, despite the fact that Nigeria's Christian population condemned the cartoons a long time ago. These people are making it really, really difficult to be tolerant. 'Offensive' drawings do not equal murder. These protesters and jihad-declaring imams need to try the fine art of politics and diplomacy, rather than just killing everything they don't like. But i guess that's the whole problem, isn't it? -
Close, the G major scale has an F#, not an F natural. The amount of sharps and flats depends on the key you are in. The rest of that is right though. As for your question, it would almost always be the same chords played on every instrument. So, Dm and G over Dm and G. With scales and arpeggios, you have some choice, but when you start superimposing chords on top of one another, you get some weird stuff going on. Not to say it can't sound good, but it's much more difficult, and it totally changes the sound. For instance, if you chose to play an A over a G, it wouldn't sound like A or G, but some weird chord thats halfway between. Let's see... A major = A C# E G major = G B D So you would get a chord that seemed to consist of G A B C# D E. Which is a... G 6/9(b5). Or maybe an A11/G. Anyway, my point is that playing different chords over another is kind of hit and miss. Not to say it can't sound good, but it's better to just stick with the same chords. That was a really long-winded response, sorry.

Pushing For Nuclear Power Alternatives?
Ravenous Yam replied to Crusader's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
Chernobyl was a disaster because it was a shitty, cheaply made soviet reactor. They have tested CANDU (Canada Deuterium Uranium) reactors by flying airliners into dummy reactors, which are literally unscathed afterwards. The problem with Chernobyl was the Soviets used the BARE MINIMUM concrete around the reactor thought to be safe (the USSR was cheap on everything). Modern reactors use like 20X the required thickness. I did a project on CANDU in grade 12. The problem is the social stigma around nuclear power, when really technology has advanced so much they are as safe (nearly as safe?) as any other power technology. The waste is still an issue though. -
I got my free weights and olympic bench for free from a friend of my parents' who doesn't need it anymore. Way better than the gym I used to go to, and it didn't cost me one cent. Plus free weights are better than machines anyway. But it is still worth it to join a gym, if such a situation is not available to you.

Elaborate on the labour shortage? If so, there's a huge economic boom here right now; lots of people apparently left their former jobs to go work in and around the oilfields (like Yasa), or got promoted or whatever - i don't know all the details. In all seriousness though , any place where a student might work or where there is no specialized training required is hiring... P/T, F/T, skilled (like construction) or unskilled labour (like retail) - doesn't matter. EVERYWHERE is hiring.

Oh snap!! Sure, I could liaison this away, but why?

I read/lurk at several others, but this is the only one I post at.

I work out lifting weights every day I'm not too outright exhausted to do so. I have a full free weight set and olympic bench in my basement, so I don't even have to go to the gym. I've been working out religiously for the past 6 months or so. It's great, and I'm really seeing results. 'Tis good.

The '1st 3rd 5th' is in relation to the major scale. All western music theory is organized according to the major scale. For example, the C major scale is: C D E F G A B (C ) From your question, the 1st means the 1st degree (1st note) in the scale, in this case C. The 3rd means the 3rd scale degree, in this case E, and so on. C D E F G A B C 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 I hope the formatting doesn't screw up the alignment, but it should work. So for the major chord, formula 1 3 5, that means the 1st, 3rd, and 5th degrees of the major scale. In C, that would include C( 1), E( 3) and G( 5). Even if it is in a minor key, the formula is still in relation to the major scale (not always the C major, but the major of the key you are working in). For this example, an E minor chord has the formula 1 b3 5. b3 means 'flat-3rd'. Therefore, an E minor chord includes the notes E(1), G(b3) and B(5). [if it were E major, the G(b3) would become a G#(3)]. *Note: It gets slightly more complicated when you get into 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths - that means they are in a higher octave than the rest of the notes. All you do to know which note it is for the higher numbers is subtract 7. 9=2 11=4 13=6 It's just a way of keeping track easier in the bigger chords.

I'm waiting to get called back for a job at Superstore-Liquorstore. If that doesn't pan out, probably S/R or stock somewhere. Very literally, nearly every single place of (non-professional) employment is hiring in Calgary because there's a huge labour shortage.

I donated blood today. Other than that, it was pretty uneventful.

Jimmy Page was at his best as producer. He was very innovative production-wise. Not to say he couldn't write awesome songs, which he definitely did. But he was one incredibly sloppy guitar player! As for the test, i got The 'Elitist' When it comes to music, you are 86% Appreciator and 40% Consumer...

Prog Rock

Porcupine Tree are incredibly kickass. In Absentia and Deadwing are two of the most solid albums i've ever heard.
