  1. Christ it's good to hear someone say this, agreed Arrows is easily top 4 for me. That record and tour got me legitimately excited, because honestly I felt about half of both Vancouver and LOES covered familiar territory I wasn't keen to hear revisited. Arrows on the other hand channelled the big, rocking momentum of such songs on AOB/Avalanche/WLRR, while sounding fresh as fuck. It still sounds fresh. There are few MG records, or any records for that matter, which are great from start to finish. Arrows kept my interest as a fan, as did most of Chaotic Neutral. Two superb records in a row, and then... Something Like a Storm, the first record I was overall 'meh' about. Not a great feeling, left wondering "is this it... is Matt finally sitting back comfortably?" I mean as a fan, for TWENTY-THREE YEARS I've been curious and confounded by the unique and original moments found on literally every successive album. Thankfully Moving Walls is completely dispelling that notion. It's turning out to be great record, yet another solid collection of songs from one of my favourite artists to keep my interest. As much as I'm enjoying it, overall at present I feel mostly relieved that evidently 'the well' is far from empty. Phew. Very fucking excited to see these tunes live next week here in Toronto!
  2. Came across this piece by Mac Cameron recently, I know you guys'd appreciate it. A thoughtfully articulated commentary on many (most) of my favourite musicians can be elusive, this is good reflection from a true fan. https://dominionated.ca/features/loser-anthems-matthew-good/
  3. I agree they're very similar. When Mark Hollis passed away in February I finally took the time to listen to some Talk Talk. Both of these songs sound musically and vocally inspired by 'New Grass' from Talk Talk's '91 record Laughing Stock. I think there's little chance they aren't, given the similarities. They're all beautiful pieces in their own right, easily top third of Matt's catalogue in my opinion.
  4. Song for the Girl, even though it pops in my head once and awhile of its own accord. WLRRR is actually one of my favourite records, period. But I do share the sentiment of others here on the board that Little Terror is not a great song. 99% of Us is Failure I'm a Window Last Parade Zero Orchestra The last two records (Arrows and Chaotic) have been phenomenal in my opinion, the only tracks from each that don't blow my mind being Letters in Wartime and All You Sons and Daughters.
  5. I've noticed all of the solo records have at least one classically 'pop' song, each with a similar cohesion in terms of how it fits on the album (a 'soft spot') and the reaction it elicits in the listener (head bobbing). Every time, every record has that moment! There's a mental acknowledgement every time 'that' track comes around. Maybe it's the tempo overall. Anyone else agree/disagree? Arrows of Desire (2013) Hey Hell Heaven Lights of Endangered Species (2011) In a Place of Lesser Men Vancouver (2009) Us Remains Impossible Hospital Music (2007) The Devil's in Your Details White Light Rock & Roll Review (2004) In Love with A Bad Idea (and/or It's Been Awhile Since I was Your Man) Avalanche (2003) Song for the Girl
  6. I'm A Window. I do find Little Terror and Zero Orchestra a bit tedious as well...
  7. http://www.dimeadozen.org/ Sign up and Wheeee, away you go! Thanks Michael for uploading :) NEAT
  8. Agreed, fair assessment Nick. And I see the truck prominently as well in the Boy Come Home... that and the unemployment line stretched to the desert! I always see 'the clear' that the narrator came upon in While We Were Hunting Rabbits. A big open meadow under a huge, bright night sky. I'm sure this is a pretty common association, it's a powerful image, along with the boat on the ocean. For House of Smoke and Mirrors, I see a lot of plum purple with dusty yellow patches of light... and some orange near the end. Ha, maybe a mirror or two? And LOL, Marco, my name's Christian - 'kickass' is the member title applied that denotes my status in the Bored hierarchy in terms of my participation through topic creation and responses (i think). You're 'a long way down', accordingly :P
  9. I have colour/texture association more than anything. A Boy and His Machine Gun, for example, I've always seen an orange and black static-e/molten pattern. Your ex was a real cold tony, forget her; remember your old friend :)
  10. I really wanted to hear 'How It Goes' on the last tour. Omissions?? Life Beyond?? Amazing. Buh. BUHH
  11. Off-topic, but I'm going to take this opportunity to reaffirm my opinion that WLRRR is one of Matt's better albums, and my personal favourite. A brilliant recording that captures a certain 'spirit of the day', and yet felt like a classic from the moment of its release.
  12. Yes alcohol addiction is indeed no laughing matter, but lighten up. Girl's comment was a less direct way of saying 'wtf this dude was unconscious at a matt good show!'
  13. Only a 3 hr drive to Rochester... hm.
  14. Agreed, crowd was nuts tonight. I missed the first half hour though, what'd they open with? I had dudes left and right air-guitaring, it was ridiculous! Anolder gentleman was sitting beside me, with his grandson. When they played apparitions, the man said to the boy, 'now here's a classic one'.
  15. Got a ticket for tonight's show :) wonder if they'll play Hornets?? I have to agree with Jesse, this band is one of the best incarnations, and they're just warming up! Christian thor Valdson will always be held in highest regard in my eyes though; I fucking LOVED his band Copyright, and his touring on Avalanche & WLRRR shows was brilliant. Digression aside, hope you folks with tix enjoy the show tonite! It's likely going to be exceptional.
  16. !!! Made my day!
  17. OHHHH Killed IT! I gotta say, compared to last Tuesday's show in Mississauga, the band absolutely Rocked a great show out! The vibe was 180°. I'm now convinced, Jimmy is a great guitarist for this tour - he knows these songs rock, again the enthusiasm he's brought to older material has made ME in turn love hearing what had been pretty standard (IMHO) renditions of BM singles for the past few years. Highlight was Silent Army for me, awesome of Matt to dedicate the song to Scott Olson, the US vet who took a rubber bullet during the Occupy Oakland police attack, and currently in hospital witha fractured skull. Fuck the grumblings about Toronto, the band obviously felt the vibe and stepped the show up in kind. Weapon is still just brilliant, that riff is like Bowie's Rebel Rebel riff, it can do no wrong and does not go stale! Ima go see if I can find tickets for tomorrow night's show on Craigslist :P
  18. What? Nah I was there, second row centre! Fucking lights were BRIGHT! Enjoyed the show, found the pianist awesome and the new guitarist a bit rough... but he brought some energy to the older material (time bomb/load me up), they really rocked out. I must say that though I am no longer moved by 'apparitions' live, it was a great throwback to hear organ played as in the original recording, neat! Rabbits was indeed a great surprise this tour, akin to when they started playing Suburbia again. Met Mr. Good afterwards, standard meet n greet. Had some records and a beautiful midnight poster signed - would have gone round to the tour bus to try and track down Ian, but it's raining pretty steadily tonight. Perhaps after the Toronto show next week... all in all good show and a good night, ran in to a few people I haven't seen in years as well (like 15 years!) crazy. Buh.
  19. I'll be attending the meet n greet after the Mississauga show tonite. I actually had great seats, 8th row centre, but a friend of mine recently moved to BC and can't make it, so I bought her VIP ticket and my pal's gf is taking my ticket. I really dislike arranged interactions like this, hopefully it won't be too weird. Really looking forward to hearing this album live!
  20. and I raise you FUCKING great band ;)
  21. Nice, Broken cover is great. But I HAVE to point out the spelling error on 'thusday' ;)
  22. Colin Stetson's album is great, thanks for the sampling. I agree it's too left-field to win, Destroyer are great. Hey Rosetta are great. I like Timbre Timber's album a lot more than their previous. Just getting into The Weeknd, which is very welcomed as I've been really feeling the down-tempo new Drake track 'Marvin's Room' It seems like anyone's game, enjoying most of these records a lot. I will say that I think Austra has a fat slice of hype on the side of their offering... I like it but it's not got ahold of me yet. Haven't been a Ron Sexmith fan to this point at all, but the track they've got streaming on the Polaris website is great.
  23. Literally every record I've purchased from an independent label has included, as courtesy, a digital download link. It makes sense because few have a record player that rips (ha indeed few even have a record player) to digital. Also it's good marketing - what label wouldn't want you to listen the artists they're representing as much and as easily as possible? Major labels I guess, buh. Granted, the download links rarely (but have on occasion) provide a FLAC option, but 320kbps mp3 is just fine with me.
  24. Serious? I think this thread should be renamed 'singers I don't like'. Let's call Mick Jagger crap while we're at it! If we're talking shitty singers, the obvious that comes to mind are the likes of Chad Kroeger and everyone on his 604 label... aside from Ian Thornley. Dallas Green is a decent technical singer, but damn if every note he sings doesn't annoy the hell out of me. And his lyrics aren't at all inspired. Boring. Also, what's shitty about Dolores O'Riordan of Cranberries? Haven't heard her sing since the band reformed, but...? Unique voice, pretty much defines the band.
  25. Arcade Fire made a brilliant record, but they don't need a hand after winning the Grammy. I'd love to see Braids get the prize. I've been following their development for the past 2 years, and they absolutely deserve it for the work and dedication they've shown not only to their work and performances, put through touring practically non-stop since I saw their first gig in TO back in Sept '09. If you haven't given 'Native Speaker' a listen yet...!! I'll have to finally check out Destroyer ;)
