I've got HD-DVD, just because I've heard and read that the picture quality is better. Although, Blu Ray has more storage capacity, it doesn't seem like they are using it to it's full potential.

i am going to say blu ray because of the storage, but hopefully they can do a HD-DVD/Blu Ray drive, that would be sweet, but freakenly expensive.

This bugs the absolute shit out of me. It's exactly the whole Beta/VHS situation all over again but now with DVD's, I dont really care who wins i just want my DVD collection not to be obsolete - they betther run on either of these two players. If they dont, i will literally never buy another DVD product in my life and will probably smash a lot of things. Such as the faces of the owners of these companies.

this is where someone explains the intricate differences between the two. I have no knowledge on either of them

they're inherently the same, it's just a matter of which one is backed by more/bigger companies. i think blu-ray will win. but considering that a blu-ray player costs upwards of $1000 and an hd-dvd drive can be had for $199, i'd say you can't lose by trying hd-dvd first.

apparently steps have been taken to make a HD/BLU-RAY/regular DVD player. I personally like the blu-rays better.

I don't care. I don't want to start buying more stuff that I don't need and I don't want to be buying a new machine AGAIN.

I'm just going to stick with DVD player. I don't care if I have to put in more discs or the picture quality becaues the picture quality is good enough.

nobody uses anything but a computer to listen to music, anyway. however, if you cared enough about sound quality, you'd buy a standalone dedicated cd player.

this is true, but i bet that's a big selling point anyway.

it's not possible to convert them to a higher resolution, they merely change the way it's played to emulate a higher resolution. the difference is nominal. at least to my tv and i.

having recently learned that hd-dvd does not have dvd players that output 1080p (yet), i have to push 100% behind blu-ray.

i won a blu-ray player like a year and a half ago when i went to some tech convention thingy with a buddy who was in the industry. i had no idea what it was and my buddy figured it was one of those technologies that would stay in asia so when some nerd from commercial electronics offered me $400, i took it. considering the fun i had with those four bills and the constant boredom i have with movies, i'd say it was a fair trade.

HD-DVD for now, though if Sony can get in gear with blu-ray, who knows.

i wouldn't expect "regular" DVDs to go anywhere anytime soon, though. there just isn't enough of a market for high-definition yet (HD sets are estimated to be in maybe 30% of US homes) to warrant going crazy on either of the new formats.

actually, i think the next wave's gonna be wax cylinders. ;)

i vote for whichever format that will allow me to rip and burn.

i've seen blu-ray burners/writers already out for PC's, think they got 'em at futureshop/bestbuy.

But likely they'll both be ripable.

that just means that you can write data to the discs, not that you can rip blu-ray movies.

blu-ray is way better for holding data, but i never burn enough data for that to be useful to me.

Just like in the VHS war, Sony has barred the pornography industry from using their player, meaning it could easily go the way of Beta. Too bad they're too PG to allow adult content on their media.
