Top 5 All Time Favorite Video Games?
Prometheon replied to FantasticDamage's topic in Tech Section: A Hard Drive at Risk
Games I've spent the most time on in my life: Diablo 2 FF7 FF6 FFT Star Ocean 2 Honorable mention: Super Smash -
Evan: You "give them a job" or "show them the money" based on passion, interest, and drive. But I feel like you and Toady are using different words for the same thing. If you're incredibly passionate about something, wouldn't you be educated and knowledgeable about it? I can be "passionate" about architectural engineering, but if I've never taken a course or read a book on eng, design, or math in my life, I think it's foolish for an employer in that field to hire me. The opportunity cost is too high. But those people who are passionate about something are rarely uneducated about it, no? How do you quantify passion, interest, and drive? A question: Instead of finance, you work in software. Your company is looking for an Objective-C Developer. I LOVE MOBILE DEVICES OMG AND I OWN LIKE 927902 APPS AND WANT THIS JOB MORE THAN I WANT FOOD OR TRUE LOVE. I live and breathe them. But I've never programmed a thing in my life and don't even know how to use HTML tags to make shit bold or italic. I am EXTREMELY eager and willing to learn. What do you do? What if it was a medical job and not a computing one? (I guess what I'm trying to say is that people are passionate and interested in a lot of shit that they have no business doing.) Edit: I agree with everyone here 100% about traditional interviewing being deeply flawed. It's quite flawed, but I'm glad that some companies are finally getting more creative.

Those guys are fucking awesome Satty. Though the "fuck the Iraqis" line in the first track made me do a double take. -
I think the question is even more interesting if no one would KNOW why you died. Like, if a genie appeared and said "I will save the world politically, environmentally, and socially, but for me to do so, you must be teleported onto the street right now and hit by a bus. No one will know you died for this cause: it will simply look like an unfortunate accident." I'd do it. For realz. What do most people "accomplish" in their lives? They have a job and a spouse and kids. Maybe donate some money to charity. If they're an outlier they may contribute to science or the arts, but even then in most cases that contribution is minor. While I do want to contribute, I feel like it's more likely that I'm the guy who invents Viagara or the Post-It morseo than the guy who invents insulin or the car. And saving the world is a better "use" of my life than giving people boners or affixing sticky notes. And I don't buy that crap about it being "our journey" to try and reach perfection slowly. Fuck it: I'd fast track society if I could.

OK, I want you to think of a friend. Not your best friend, but someone you would classify as significantly more than an acquaintance. Seriously, get them in your mind. Do it now. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . OK, good. This person is going to be attacked by a bear. This is unavoidable. The person will live, 100% guaranteed, but the extent of their injuries is entirely unknown. They could get off with a few scratches, or they could lose multiple limbs. They could be in a wheel chair, or they could be shooting hoops the next week. But they will be attacked by a bear and they will live. Magically, you have the power to stop this from happening, but at a peculiar cost to you. Should you stop the bear, it will never stop raining. Sometimes it will pour and sometimes it will drizzle, but it will never NOT be raining. This is a localized event: it won't screw up climate and it won't be over the whole Earth: just around your general vicinity. You will never see the Sun again. Do you stop the bear? (Note: this is taken and paraphrased from Chuck Klosterman's game Hypertheticals.)

Amen brother. The best way to end the day is with ice cream and sex, followed by a cozy bed (queen size, in an ideal world.) Do you believe in ghosts?

But it isn't mutually exclusive. Getting mediocre marks in no way makes you more likely to be an "outside of the box" thinker. In my experience the people who have their shit together both do well in school and can come up with creative and novel solutions to problems. "Oh, I'm too CREATIVE to do well in school. The shackles of intellectual credentialism are just too rigid for my brilliant mind." Looks like rationalization for laziness to me.

You guys are nuts. Any job that I apply for in my field, the FIRST thing they do is say "resume and transcripts." And if both aren't damn impressive, you're likely not getting the call.

I thought you'd really dig the first Cayetano track, Charles. Satty: really? Just because it isn't top 40 and isn't shitty prog rock/nu metal it's "hipster?" They're all great songs, and if listening to music you legitimately enjoy and wanting to share it is hipster, then I guess I am. -

I'm applying for a job at a really fun-looking workplace that's requesting video submissions along with resume/cv. Here's mine: Edit: all the hideous cuts and fade-outs are intentional. But sadly, my overuse of the words "sale" and "associate" are not. Ah well.
