Cold Harbour? (lights Of Endangered Species Megathread!)
Prometheon replied to Who's topic in Matthew Good
You guys are nuts: Zero Orchestra is the shit. That said, my initial impression is one of mild disappointment. Extraordinary Fades is an ok opener. Nothing that blows my mind, but I like the instrumentation even though it's a bit long (even at under 3:00). How It Goes is just not my cup of tea. I can't really explain it, but when the strings swell in the beginning, I just find it silly. And the melody is kind of "meh." Shallow's Low makes me impatient and I find myself fighting for affection until the admittedly awesome ending. Still, pretty good. What If I Can't See the Stars, Mildred? is ok, but underwhelming. Zero Orchestra is wicked. Totally love it. I wish there was a bit more vocal dynamic, but still; no complaints. Non Populus is pretty sweet and holds my attention quite well for such a long track. In a Place Of Lesser Men is quite good. I dig it. Short and sweet. Set Me on Fire is awesome. Lights of Endangered Species I just don't "get." I feel like nothing happens. Am I missing something? Of 9 tracks, I'd say only 5 of them will be listened to with any degree of frequency. A batting average just slightly above 50% doesn't impress me much. Luckily, the tracks that are good are so good that it still makes the album a more than worthwhile purchase for me. -

I actually really like the brevity of it. It keeps you wanting more, rather than most music which recites the chorus so many times that you hate it by the end. -

I definitely dig the song, but it's still got the super "canned" drum sound that I hate from Vancouver. I haven't listened to much Matt Good for a long time. This track has me excited again. Edit: Here's my stab at the lyrics Anton: She goes about her day and keeps her cool until the weekend in a place of lesser men Order in some food, turn on the news, hear some fool say "the world is gonna end" Best spend the night under your bed When she was a girl, she learned the words every boy couldn't say It's not your currency that spends In a place of lesser men She walks from work at night, blood on day But I don't worry; I don't worry. How come I don't worry? I don't worry She goes about her day and keeps her cool until the weekend When she was a girl, she learned the words every boy couldn't say There's nothing worthwhile to defend In a place of lesser men I sleep on nails at night, but I can hear her thinking. Don't you worry, don't you worry, don't you worry, don't you worry, baby don't you worry don't you worry, don't you worry, don't you worry. -
Very cliche, but a nice little 30 second read. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am in a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush Of beautiful birds in circling flight, I am the starshine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom, I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing, I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave bereft I am not there. I have not left. -Mary Frye

"The total amount of suffering per year in the natural world is beyond all decent contemplation. During the minute that it takes me to compose this sentence, thousands of animals are being eaten alive, many others are running for their lives, whimpering with fear, others are slowly being devoured from within by rasping parasites, thousands of all kinds are dying of starvation, thirst, and disease. It must be so. If there ever is a time of plenty, this very fact will automatically lead to an increase in the population until the natural state of starvation and misery is restored. In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference. ~ Richard Dawkins "God's Utility Function," Scientific American, November, 1995, p. 85

I read about an eskimo man who asked the local missionary priest, "If I did not know about God and sin, would I go to hell?" "No" said the priest, "Not if you did not know." "Then why," asked the eskimo, "did you tell me?" -Annie Dillard
