You know, me and Adam were talking last year about how it's strange there are so few fans from that era. I mean, obviously a good portion of people who know of Matt probably know of him from the late 90/early 2000s, and there are a sizable portion of people who I see online that say they got into him in the later 2000s as well, but I think you are the first person I've ever seen note that they started following him "BEFORE" LOTGA came out which is pretty damned cool. Where and how did you first hear of him?

Albatross was hit and miss for me. There were certain songs I really liked (Albatross, Control, Rest of the World) and more than a few I felt were pretty "meh". I've felt that way about all of their CDs since they reunited actually. It's funny you should mention their second album though as I've always felt that was one of the strongest CDs I've ever listened to, from any band. I agree it's long, but the amazing thing to me about it was that there is almost no filler which is rare for any group. I wish more bands could pull that off these days as 14-15 great songs on one album is just fantastic (the ironic thing, imo was that the two weakest songs of the album were singles, lol). Undersold, Everything is Fine, Ladylike, Breakthrough (which featured Miles Kennedy before he hit it big with Alterbridge), West Virginia, and Defined By What We Steal are standouts for me in the entirety of the BW catalog. They just did such a great job at finding a balance between complex instrumental layering, unique sonic instrumentation, meaningful lyrics/vocal performances, and enjoyable/catchy melodies that it's one that really stands the test of time for me. But, each to their own ? Nothing wrong with someone else feeling differently. I've been really digging this one. It seems like the band was able to take the more technical side of their song writing/performing abilities that they've been honing this decade and mix it with Ian's ability to write catchy tunes. Hope the new album has more like this. -
What was Matt’s reaction? I know in the past he has not taken kindly to folks becoming violent at his shows. https://youtu.be/dKm1WRp5Rs8

Thanks a lot! I've only ever heard Matt do one piece that would qualify as close to electronic, and that was the "Globes" background music loop he had on his site sometime in 2004. It wasn't electronic in the sense of "dance electronic" thankfully, but it had an electronic texture to it (if that makes any sense) and it sounded really well created. Almost like a sad, kind of empty feel. Really liked it and wouldn't mind hearing more of that kind of work from him one day.

This was a long time ago that Matt mentioned it (think it was a 2004 Chart Attack article), but I was curious if he still has any interest or drive in doing an electronic album ever in his career? I think you're right too. He may not reply all the time, but he does seem to listen. I brought up a brief discussion about playing Omissions in the original picking pattern that he had played it on the album after he did a chord version during the 2014 September show in Toronto with Jay Baruchel. He actually did reply saying that he felt the song was more about the lyrics than the guitar, but a little while after that he did start playing it the original way it was written. So it is nice that he takes what fans think into consideration even though he doesn't have to.

As much as I'd love to hear a full band rendition of the original, since to me it's one of his greatest songs, hearing the reworked acoustic version he's working on sounds really cool too. It almost has that empty acoustic Hello Time Bomb feel to it, which seems almost appropriate for the song all things considered. Really hope he figures out the full thing and we all get to hear it.

Not that it matters now but that would have been incredible. AOB is still my favourite album from MGB or Matt. Do u have a link to the article? While its shitty we’ll never get to see that, it’s possible if Adam manages to get the full version of their performance at Much back in June of 96 we might get something even better.

Thanks for posting those Foats. Very gracious of you. I should have been more clear when I first posted though that I meant the video of it. I was looking for it all over the place and couldn't find it. Eventually, just a few days ago, I got lucky and found that there was a website for the flood aid concert and they have a copy of the entire televised performance. It was just unlisted for some reason which is why it doesn't show up on Youtube searches. Matt and the band start at the 3:33.33 mark. Was a great performance. Jimmy was always intense and lively on guitar and I really miss the dynamic Anthony brought with the keys. He adds some nice texture and depth into the songs.

Cool! Even if you can't find it I appreciate you looking. Just out of curiosity though, do you mean you have the audio to it, or both the audio and video to it?
-
Cool. I'll have to check it out. Always looking for new shows to watch. Thanks for the input. Bummer. Was enjoying that one. Thanks for the heads up.

Isn't that sort of the plot to 12 Monkeys? Watched the trailer for the first season yesterday though. Looks like it could be decent. Do you mean Colony was cancelled? Or the other Vancouver filmed show? I'm about 3 quarters of the way through season 2. Good series for the most part.

Anyone watched the series yet? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6cDDmk-O5A It's on Netflix and stars Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. They both do fantastic jobs. Best description I've heard of it was this tweet (though I'd add Cloud Atlas and Inception in there too).

Just in case anyone wants to be able to look at them without searching them up: Get a good run at it Whip the horse and rattle The station of state a bit A universe of battle Every second a sun Somewhere one dies No heaven's heir apparent There the first time Well I know this feeling I get it all the time Every second a sun Somewhere one dies Time to get on with it The prison and the shackles Colonize you brick by brick Leading by example Sun up, sun down Two hundred species die Crawled off a cliff There the first time Well I know the reasons I use them all the time From sun up to sun down I believe in the power of an ocean A trillion miles bereaved But there the first time There the first time Sun up, to sun down There the first time

Does anyone happen to have a digital copy of the 3 songs Matt and the band played that month at the concert? It was broadcast live and I've been looking online, but can't find anything that exists.

Looks more recognizable and reminiscent here: This was published in January of this year. -
Came across this while looking for something else. Really good interview, especially his answer to the last question. https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/video/matthew-good-releases-new-album-amidst-major-shifts-in-music-industry~1238358

I'll respect Anton's wishes and not speculate beyond this, but I just want to clarify before we get back on topic that I think the Ashley who sent me the tapes was someone else. I won't post any personal details but I used to chat with her on MSM Messenger so I remember her and the descriptions you guys are all giving don't fit her look, age, or personality.

You know what? I apologize. I could have handled that more diplomatically and less counter intuitively. I agree it's better for someone with more subscribers to post the videos as more people will see them. Likewise, I shouldn't have accused you of posting those just to increase subscribers to your channel. I don't know you and I get wanting to share things with other people. It's why I sent those to Adam in the first place to be converted. If more MG/MGB fans can see them as a result of them being posted on your channel, who wouldn't have otherwise noticed them, all the better. Like I said though, just for the sake of courtesy, in the future if you could at least ask for permission first and give credit to the place you got them from right off the bat that would be cool. Anyways, thanks for calm and rational reply.
-
Here's an idea: Since you were already called on it once, when you take stuff that other people took the time to make available, and then post it as your own (for the purpose of increasing your own traffic) maybe first ask permission, and second... credit them for it- meaning since you took it from Chad's site you could maybe actually include a link to his site on your YT page in the first bloody place. Not one of these videos includes a link to his site.

Second is an interview Rachel did with the band back into 1999 on their Edgefest stop in Edmonton. This includes a friendly rivalry with Moist, Rachel from Much Music (who unbeknownst to most, including myself up until watching this, actually apparently gave Matt the garden gnome that would eventually appear in the Anti-Pop video), part of a live performance of Deep Six, and Dave vs Rich for Rachel's affection, lol.
-
First on the list is Rico, live @ Much Music in December of 1998 at the Big Shiny Tunes 3 Release Party. Apparently this was the first performance Rich ever played with the band. Again, props to Adam for creating a digital copy here and for all of the others I'm going to post. Muchly appreciated (See what I did there ? ).
-
Lol, Anton can you enable the edit function for me? ? That is pretty damned cool if it was his first performance with them. Good catch, Adam. Edit- until Anton makes the original post available to edit again I'll just leave the new link here: Thanks again to Adam for the digital copy. This was all his effort and knowledge put to use so that we could watch this without Matt looking like a hologram version of Tupac and Michael Jackson from South Park, lol. Gonna upload the Rico performance next.

I just sent the tape out to Adam today, so hopefully once he receives and converts it to a digital copy we'll have a better version on Youtube (along with a few other interviews and performances). Like I said, it actually looks a lot better on my TV when played straight from VHS. It's just that holding a cell phone in front of my TV and recording that way didn't exactly produce the best results, lol. And you're welcome!

Just out of curiosity, what part shows them at the 98 MMVAs? It's been a while since I've watched the MMM Bio, but I don't recall seeing a clip of them from there. Edit- Never mind, just found it at the 17:48 mark. You're right, Geoff is there as they're telling Bill he won for best director so there's no way the performance could have been from the 1998 MMVAs. My bad. Thanks for the clarification. I'll change the title.

A little off topic, but I just wanted to say how awesome your site is, btw. The amount of work you've put into that thing is just astounding. Really appreciate all the rare downloads and info on there. I was looking for a full copy of the NMW West speech Matt did in 2002 for a while and your site was the only place I could find it, plus the tour dates and set lists (even if incomplete) are a really cool wealth of dates/info to have. So yeah, muchly appreciated. And thanks (along with TIPS) for the info about when Geoff officially left. Also helps with determining the possible date of the performance.
