  1. Yes it would, but under capitalism, the worst polluters are not subject to popular controls. Ownership is not work. Profit, rent, and interest on loans - these are not work. They are income derived from ownership rather than work. Most capitalists advocated the abolition of serfdom - was it "theft" when serfom was abolished and the peasants who had always worked the land became its owners? It would no more be theft if capitalism were abolished and factory workers became owners, merely a social revolution.
  2. No, the crime of polygamy does not include the act of marrying someone who is already married.
  3. But they haven't been charged with any crimes, and they aren't polygamists. They are the wives of a polygamist.
  4. These aren't Nazi war criminals we're talking about, they haven't been charged with any crimes, they're simply being deported because they aren't Canadian citizens even though their children are.
  5. They don't have anything to do with Warren Jeffs. Here is the relevant info: http://www.cbc.ca/bc/story/bc_blackmore20060517.html I think that parents of Canadian children should have a right to stay in Canada.
  6. Warren Jeffs is not the one being deported. Three of Winston Blackmore's wives, mothers of his (Canadian) children are.
  7. Hmm, nope, think you should reread it.
  8. Um, the three women being deported are mothers of Blackmore's children and I'm not aware of any charges other than polygamy.
  9. They're 3rd world countries because of the legacy of decades of colonial rule, and then decades of economic blackmail forcing bad policy on them, and because those that occupy their high offices are corrupt and in the pocket of one special interest group or another (usually foreign businesses). Socialism can mean a great many things, but I'm specifically talking about democratic control over the means of production and collective worker self-management through unions. Just because company X owns factory Y doesn't mean they have a right to own it. Ownership isn't self-justifying. Workplaces should belong to their workers. If this sounds crazy, remember that before the feudal system was abolished, nobles owned all the land and collected dues from the peasants who worked it. That system was finally recognized as fundamentally unequal and wrong, and the peasants became landowners. Socialism is of course by no means a cure for waste, only a means of empowering the masses to (hopefully) take action and implement rational economic planning to avert a global environmental crisis. This cannot happen under capitalism because capitalism is all about maximizing short-term profit. CEOs who place other concerns above short-term profit can be fired. Our government's current form of capitalism also involves cleaning up big business's pollution on the public tab, and subsidizing polluters.
  10. Regardless of what one thinks of polygamists, parents of Canadian children should not be deported.
  11. If Heyrabbit is still around and willing to continue the debate: You say that capitalism rewards productivity and you're right. Did it occur to you that we might not want to reward productivity? Productivity requires consumption - rewarding productivity encourages consumption. Given the Earth has finite resources and finite dumping space, an ever-growing economy will one day make the planet uninhabitable - that is a mathematical fact.
  12. Not lowering the flag for each individual death was fine when Canadian soldiers were fighting wars and many casualties were expected. Those days are over; Canadians have mostly become quite anti-war (Quebecois always were) and expect to be made aware of every single casualty, because one is too many. What Harper is saying by not lowering the flag for each dead soldier is that casualties are to be expected. Canadian soliders have no business fighting wars. They have more important things to worry about.
  13. Prisoners have rights too. If rights are forfeited by committing a criminal act, they're not really rights. I have rights that no state authority may legitimately deprive me of. What about you people? Do you have rights, or do you have privileges granted to you by society? The reason prisoners get a say in electing our government is because they are bound by the laws our government makes. That is the essence of democracy. There is no grey area about "universal suffrage." It's either universal or it isn't.
  14. Weezer can still write the odd chorus that makes you want to sing along, but yeah, they lost that special something a long time ago. But anyway, I like Perfect Situation.

  16. The McLusky single was released this year, even though the album was last year. The Killers have one good song. Coldplay blow but that song is good, and I can see why people don't like Sean Paul, but you take that right back about Green Day. >:(
  17. Only four of those I wanted to include, the first one and the last three. The rest blow, especially "Technologic," good god.

  20. Who says the Liberals are great at managing our economy, anyway? We have budget surpluses, but the social safety net is in tatters. We have the lowest unemployment rate in years, but the new jobs are mostly part-time jobs with little in the way of benefits, or low-paying jobs in the service industry - well-paying jobs are disappearing fast.
  21. Left-leaning voters concerned about the environment should vote NDP, as most environmental lobby groups gave them slightly higher marks than the Greens.
  22. You can't make a strike illegal! International agreements to which Canada is signatory guarantee the right to strike, and are are part of the "supreme law of the land" which supercede provincial law. Sorry, guy, the Liberals are the ones breaking the law, as usual. There was plenty of furor when the NDP did it, you probably just don't remember. As for employers having the right to set the terms of employment - wrong. Terms of employment are decided by agreement between employer and employee. That's the way it works, it's just that often the employee isn't in a position to influence the terms, so they're told to "take it or leave it." That's what unions are for - giving employees a voice in the negotiations over terms of employment.
  23. Unions are about fighting to exercise control over your job. Why should teachers have to "get another job?" They want better treatment for the jobs they have, and there's nothing wrong with them standing up and demanding it. Workers do have the right to strike, and the international agreements guaranteeing this that Canada is signatory to take precedence over provincial law - in other words, it's illegal to legislate teachers back to work.
