So My Sister Has A New Boyfriend And...
WinstonSmith357 replied to sodamntired's topic in Matthew Good
The whole of Beautiful Midnight from beginning to end. -
The thing is: Radiohead makes amazing music.
-
I wonder if this researcher ever read The Island of Doctor Moreau?
-
I remember him raving about the release of Hail To the Thief on his blog once. He said something like, "Radiohead can't put out a bad record."

You are wise Cringleman. Thank you for writing this post so I didn't have to. We live in an unfortunate time where people believe they possess a better taste in music than everyone else does. There was a time when young people listened to LPs with their friends. Now, people will listen to their iPods by themselves. Others will go to online forums and anonymously voice their distain of music on other peoples

Sorry Moncton, the point I was trying to make is that music is filled with artists being influenced by others that came before them. I could have made that point with more tact. I still think comparisons of that nature don't consider the nuances of each artist. Matthew Good's new tunes have a darker sensibility and certain accessibility than many other current recording musicians these days. I personally think music can be about more than just heart felt interpersonal relationships. Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" is a good example. That song had a huge influence on the youth at the time. It wasn't about a girl or personal anguish caused by another person. It was about the anguish caused by a society living under the shadow of nuclear conflict. Many identified with it despite the obscure lyrics the song contained. When Dylan starting writing less "political" songs, thousands of people wanted to tear out his throat for it. Songs like "Tidal Wave" and "Black Helicopter" seem to be attempts to tap into the collective unconscious of those who pay attention to the news. These are fucked up times for those that pay attention to the news. I

Anybody have the "bombs were falling" version?
-
He was sandwiched between this bizarre avant-garde techno throat singer and Ani Difranco. He only played 45 minutes or so. Mostly because he wasn't the headliner. It was great to hear the new opener... It was about being on a plane and not being able to do anything about anything. It was great to hear "If I Was a Tidal Wave." I hope I never hear "Apparitions" live ever again. Boring.

N. Korea Missle Tests
WinstonSmith357 replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
Kim Jong Ill is a big fan of American films. Fact. Star Wars (the defence system, not the movie) doesn't work and won't ever work. If you had a "lazor" in space, why would you use it to shoot down ICBMs when you could hold the entire planet for ransom. GoldenEye anyone? North Korea isn't a threat to anybody except for South Korea. -

Read about the Soccer War. Some countries take it very seriously. -
Will There Be Another Election Soon?
WinstonSmith357 replied to Matt's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
It is political suicide to run an election with a leader that doesn't want to be prime minister. As interm leader Bill Graham isn't allowed to run in the Liberal leadership race. The Liberal party needs to regroup. They need to decide a new platform and write new policy. They won't force an election until all that has happened. It will take time. No party in Canada will force an election in a minority government unless they think they can make considerable gains. For the record, there is no such thing as a minority majority. It's either one or the other. -
Will There Be Another Election Soon?
WinstonSmith357 replied to Matt's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
Despite the fact Bill is the defacto leader of the Liberals, they are leaderless. The party is demoralized and in no shape to run a federal election. It will be another year of Conservative rule at least. -
At the Edmonton show he primarily used the Taylor mentioned above. He had a Martin onstage that he didn't touch. For Fated and The Fine Art of Falling Apart (encores) he used a jumbo Guild that came from nowhere then switched by to the Taylor. These are very pricey guitars in the $2000+ range. If you can't get the sound you're after it's probably because the guitar you're playing isn't as expensive. When it comes to acoustic instruments the quality of the wood and construction effects the sound. One can't make a $400 guitar sound like a $2000 or everybody would them.

tool
WinstonSmith357 replied to Crusader's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
Tool is very crafty with their releases. Trust nothing. 'cept Dance, dance. -
Johnny Cash's Hurt isn't that great. He just happened to die around the time it was released. Death = Popularity. The video isn't that great either. NIN is a much better piece of art. Amazed that Matthew tried it. Covers aren't better or worse than the originals. Just different interpretations.

Suburbia. The phrasing is amazing. No song sounds like it.

If you are working at a music store that's worried about words like 'fuck' and 'shit' you should probably be pushing that Black Eyed Peas song about tits and ass anyway.

Liberals In = Quebec & Alberta Out?
WinstonSmith357 replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
Alberta won't leave the confederation for a long time. The lastest polls say Harper could win enough seats to have a Conservative government. Alberta elects 30-32 Convervatives right off the bat every election. A Conservatives government wouldn't leave when they are in control. The radio is stupid. On the other hand, the Bloc is pretty fierce in their political rhetoric lately. So maybe. -
I remember hearing it on the radio when Loser Anthems was brand new. It wasn't played very often. But most of Matt's music isn't.

How are they going to check? With their Secret Police?

The picture he's using on his blog was painted by a fan. Not a self-portrait.

The story is indeed called, "The Magic Goats of Presto Island." The best part: "If I may make one suggestion, you might wat to consider changing the name of the magazine to International Geographic. It's just a thought."

Re-issue Ramblings
WinstonSmith357 replied to CaptainRocket's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
Pavement is one of the most under-rated bands of the 90s. Jeff Buckley can really belt it out. It is a shame he's dead. Weezer is classic, though Rivers is a nut-job. Anybody heard "Beverly Hills" yet? Anybody who wants to slam any of these bands must be deaf or have shit for brains. They have all written better songs than you.
