Even though getting the CD for $0.99 would have been sweet, nothing could replace the adventures my friend and I had picking up that CD from the record store the day it was released. It will forever be known as the "Matthew Good Day" to us. B)

Just curious, but how come the singles from AoB aren't on the greatest hits disc? I know Matt has issues with that particular album, but I mean, even Rico made the cut. But I don't really care about that disc anways, except to get Big City Life and Oh Be Joyful. It's the bonus CD and DVD that I'm exicted about. ;) It's like getting exactly what you wanted for X-mas.

As far as pop-culture is concerned, I think we live in a bizzare era. We spend more time reminiscing about and trying to recreate past eras than we do on trying to create something new. Just look at the current fashion trends, they aren't anything new. They're basically the same as what you would have found in the 70's and 80's. Upon seeing a kid wearing aviator sunglasses the other, my mom commented that she felt as though she was in a time warp of her youth. What is odd is that what is popular for my generation, was also popular for my parent's generation. And that whole pattern of parents hating their children's music and vise versa is dissolving because, if you're like me, a lot of the music that youth listen to is the exact same music their parents listened to. I used to hate living in this day in age due to the shortage of anythig new or orignal, but I have come to realize that maybe we have the best of both worlds now. If you think about it, we now have access to all of the greatest music ever created. You don't like the music being produced right now? Fine, you still have the ability to listen to all the fantastic bands from other music eras. All the crappy music they pump out of MTV today won't erase all of the other years of amazing music. I mean, sure it would be cool to live back in the 60's or 70's when some of the world's best rock and roll was being created, but if you lived back then, you would not have access to all of the other musical movements and eras that came after such as the grunge or even new wave era. I think today's lack of really good popular music has forced people to revisit other eras in music that may have otherwise been forgotten and resulted in people having more eclectic tastes in music which can be a good thing because it allows people to make up their own mind about what they enjoy music-wise instead of having the radio or MTV dictate it to them. Looking at my CD collection, one would think I'm living in the early to mid 90's, not the 21st century which is perfectly okay with me. It's nice to go back and discover some of the bands that I hadn't had the chance to when they were popular, because now they are new to me. The bottom line is even if all the greatest music has already been written, we shouldn't complain because we are living in an era where we are lucky enough to have access to all of it. On a different note, I was wondering the other day about what my generation's children will think of my generation's music, when I began to wonder what even is considered my generation's music. Because to me, the music they play on MuchMusic and MTV is very forgettable, and I wonder how much of it will be remembered 10, 20 years from now? Will my children know all of the words to a Good Charlotte or 50 Cent song, the way I know all the words to many Led Zeppelin or Beatles songs? Just something to think about.

I actually like the song "Beverly Hills." I didn't at first, but once you give it a chance, you realize that there's a lot more depth to it than meets the eye. When I first heard the tune, I thought, "Oh great, another song about Hollywood and envying celebs." And when I found out they were shooting the video at the Playboy mansion, I thought Weezer had hit rock bottom. But after hearing the song a few times and watching the video, I realized the song has a great sense of irony to it. Do you think that Rivers is singing about Beverly Hills because he truly wants to live amoung the self-centred megalomaniacs that live there, or is he making a tongue in cheek comment about society's unhealthy obsession with wealth and celebrity. I'd like to believe that the latter is true, especially considering Rivers could most likely afford to live in Beverly Hills, but instead chooses to live away from that scene in real life. Regarding the video; I think it's fantastic. While most bands that film music videos at the Playboy mansion do so to make themselves look cooler, Weezer uses it with a sense of irony. They know they don't really belong there and they know visiting the Playboy mansion will not make them look like babe-magnets. Bringing along a bunch of ordinary fans and showing some of the actual attractions (ie: the monkeys, the pool, etc) instead of showing the playboy bunnies draped over the guys was a great idea. In fact, you don't see a whole lot of the playboy bunnies; the video isn't about T&A, it's about ordinary people. One shot that proves my point is during the guitar solo when one of the bunnies is pretending to play Rivers' guitar, and the shot looks really cheesy but then they pan to Rivers' sitting on the ground with a look of almost disgust as if he was thinking "This is ridiculous." And at the beginning of the video when Pat is talking to Hugh Heffner on the phone and is dressed up in a bath robe and pretending to smoke, do you think he's paying tribute to Heffner or once again pointing out the irony of the whole situation? Both the video and the song work because Weezer is fully aware that they do not belong amoungst A-list celebrities or at the Playboy mansion. They are the everyman's band and the song Beverly Hills points out this fact very clearly. On another note, how can you not love that cheesy guitar solo with the wah-wah pedal? Only a band like Weezer could get away that this day in age.

Haha, yes. Their song "Mistake" was on Big Shiny Tunes 4. I used to have that CD but it broke. I miss it, but not for that particular track. My Big Shiny 90's CD also broke. What the hell does MuchMusic make their CD's out of? Cardboard?

Damn, I miss that band. Even though they came out around the same time as a lot of big bubble gum pop bands and may have been categorized in that genre by many, to me they had a lot more depth than your average boy band. And while I'm not usually a big fan of lighter, poppier music, there's just something about Savage Garden I absolutely love. Darren Hayes (the lead singer) has put out a couple albums since the band spilt. The first one I wasn't a big fan of and the second I have not heard. He had a mildly successful hit off the first CD called "Insatiable" a few years ago and I think they used to play the vid on MuchMusic.

no. listening to a song or two streaming off a website is like test driving a car. downloading the MP3 is like taking the test car home with you and using it on a daily basis. Yes, but buying the track off of iTunes and then purchasing the CD is like buying the car twice. ;)

Haha. Oh yes, the Summer Vortex concert. I was at the very front of the mosh pit and taking quite the shit kicking. I was so glad when Matt finally yelled at the crowd. I mean, I couldn't breath and I was about to get sliced in half by the security rope. It's pretty bad when the artist on stage has to provide crowd control. Most of the people there were drunk and only came to act like idiots, not to hear Matt Good sing. However, it was my first Matt Good concert so I was elated to be there anyways, enough if I woke up covered in bruises the next day. But, it's a shame you missed the Put Out Your Lights tour. I'm sure many would agree it was his finest show in Winnipeg. It was, dare I say, almost "magical". The Burton (or should I say "Walker") was a perfect venue for the show and everyone who was there was there because they actually appreciated the music, and Matt appeared to be in a great mood. Plus is was awesome hearing some tunes off of AOB for the first time.
