  1. Yes I do mean the main media and what you are referring me to is the BBC news which is far better in journalistic integrity. Im using Congo as an example, but where were they in Rwanda when that was happening? where was the international community in general but more specifically the media. The issue im really getting at here is that yes of course they pick a topic and move on, but they focus much more attention on areas where they have vested interest and thats not always a very good thing morally to do. When as humans we should look out for each other, how would we know where to go without the help of the media? The amount of money that is being poured into the Tsunami is great but at the same time four times the amount of TOTAL Tsunami victims die everyday in Africa alone. Wheres the money and help for them? This is a crisis we are ignoreing. I just wanted to generate disscussion not much of a debate however it just sorta ended up being one. But yah so ive said my peace.
  2. Id say get out and get active, its a lot more rewarding.
  3. So the media reports on current news and moves on? Please, dont give me that shit man, the Tsunami victims got way more coverage than the Congo did by far so using the comparision is hardly accurate. More have died in the Congo than the Tsunami as well so its not an issue of it being a boreing topic. Why do we hold certain life more important than others? Doesnt anyone ever question this? You can see by the media, and then by extention who owns the media nad controls it why we feel certain topics are important and others are not. This is what i want to point out and maybe it will provoke some thought.
  4. Documentary.. and failing that maybe porn ;) haha
  5. ClickHere This is an article about what is going on in Congo, since 1998, 4 million have died and this has largley been ignored by the mass media. Just a question for those out their, why do YOU feel the media chooses to ignore certain horrifying topics such as this GENOCIDE and then focus on topics that are quite useless like steroid use in baseball players? do we have mixed priorities? or do we just not care?
  6. saladbowl i did not mean to offend, I learned this stuff in University as fact, so when I saw what you wrote i assumed you were trying to say i was wrong which is fine if you can prove it, but i didnt mean to stirr any real debate i just wanted to know if i was wrong lol but yah i didnt mean it insulting so please dont take it that way.
  7. Okay, well for starters what you are speaking to is how when a human has been isolated from other human interaction it does not learn the language WE know, not the language that is used by the society it belongs to. Animals use language too we are not speaking in terms of Enlgish or French or whatever, you have to get past this and see that symbols are a form of language, Language is hard wired into our DNA, this is only one link, you have to do your own research into this topic, find me CREDIBLE contradictory evidence i will examine it myself and use the universial criteria for premiss acceptability to determine its relevance and acceptability. You dont have to agree with me, I will accept if i am wrong or not if you show me evidence that we are not hard-wired for it. I have given you one, just one link, that supports my claim, and we can keep going at this for weeks if you want to step up and show me evidence of your claim.
  8. Language is simply symbols. Infact humans are hard-wired for language as a species, look at the work of Noam Chomsky a linguistics prof at MIT if you dont believe me. In terms of symbols babys yes use symbols as well to communicate, and in turn, we use symbols to communicate with them until they learn language, which is yes again, symbols haha. So animals do use symbols as well to communicate, for example showing the teeth i believe is aggression? Im not fully positive on that one so don't quote me or anything, and infact this meant the same thing to our ancestors homo sapeins i believe. Its a very complex issue i have studied in my psychology and ethics class and at present have not the time ot get into the complexities, but if anyone is interested you can email me: [email protected] and i can explain the origins of language in a better context beucase right now i gatta get my ass to class!
  9. Okay this is weird, second time today somebody has had the exact same thoughts as me, and its the same person. Very Odd. Im a justice studies major at UOIT ( university of Ontario) and we have been discussing abolishing prisons and im in favor of it to.. wow i thought i was the only radical on this board. Anyway, yeah i dont agree with the death penalty either, you'd be surprised at how many innocent people are put to death, getting involved in organizations like United Against Injustice and Justicia (i think i might have messed up that spelling)for example in the many others they have are important. These organizations help fight the wrongly convicted. This is socially responsible for anyone and everyone to help in. I recently visited a prison in Lindsey ( southern Ontario) and it was quite frightening to imagine that someone here is probably innocent and spending time in a shithole.
  10. Shesh THANK YOU! I was beginning to think I was the only one not seeing the problem in giving heroin addicts heroin. In Vancouver they have had safe injection sites for a while, helping to combat the spread of the HIV etc. What would be wrong in us giving these addicts what they need? Its a lot safer because its regulated! People always seem to get angry when we talk about "useing the taxpayers dollar to help addicts" but these are PEOPLE as well, not just addicts and they need help! Arresting them over and over again and attempting to rehabilate them when they dont want to be rehabilited is not going to do anything. Its going to continue the cycle. What it comes down to is humanity, these people arent bad people for being addicts, people need to stop looking at addiction as a morality issue and more of a mental and physical health issue.
  11. With throwing away the Queeen etc we can work on our real Canadian culture, im hopeing to see real canadian heros on dollar bills someday, people like terry fox, michael douglas, etc, thats real Canadian independance without being american and without being held back by tradition
  12. Socialist. No suprise there... looks at avatar..
  13. At least the money went to a good cause.
  14. Snow Patrol is the cats pajamas, my friend heather got me into them.
  15. Matt Good- Empty Road I love this song.
  16. I think whether Matt talks about International politics or Canadian politics can be interchangable. International politics still effects us Canadians, and lets face it, there are a lot of crappy things that happen, and injustices in Canada. BUT! There are a lot more distressing things happening internationally and I think that his focus on international politics is better suited.
  17. Isnt there the religion of ;) scientolgy?
  18. I watched the movie and I can honestly say I dont even remember seeing him in there?? I guess I must have missed something..
  19. Liberals practice something called Brokerage politics where basically they try to be "everything to everyone".The conservatives do this as well. Both just try to be as open as possible to get votes and then work on thier real and intended plans once in office.
  20. Yep, in life you are going to die, and pay taxes, only two sure things. lol. Definatly an agnostic over here, there is no possible way to know, either this universe was intended, or it wasnt.
  21. True, i see I have completely misinterpreted lol my bad, well in that case then i have no answers or useful information to put forward!
  22. I agree with Lauren here, i think that people attempting to commit suicide need to get help. I think that assisted suicide no matter what the arrangments is with lawyers, family etc, is a very very slippery slope, people do things with lawyers and family present and this can still be taken advantage of. People in extreame pain i do feel for completely and i know that sometimes there is not enough morphine in the world to cure the hurt, but if we open this door up, misguided people, and those wanting to take advantage of this could misuse this system. To me, one innocent life dead, isnt worth it.
  23. Take into consideration that to get into military colleges you have to have top marks, like starting at 87-89% upwards, including other factors which can risk your eligablity. Plus its like a nightmare, i know some people who have done it, and it is by no means a cake walk. Up at 5, lights out at 11. However the entire day is schedualed for you, extreamly little time to do anything else. Anyway my solution is something the Univeristy of Ontario in Oshawa is thinking of for next year. Basically you go to school now and pay later, but you only pay a certain amount according to your wage bracket, so you are not paying heavily, you are paying as adjusted by your income. And for anyone who doesnt know what the UNiversity of Ontario is, its a school which opened in 2003, so i dont expect really anyone to know about it. Anyways those are my two cents.
  24. One of the best shows i have ever watched, all kinda of hilarity going on there
