No mention of Tom Waits? The man's entire body of work is basically meant to get people to drink their sorrows away alone and slumped over in their chairs. -
I gotta say the new Arcade Fire does it for me. Just brilliant. Hospital Music is a tight second though.

Actually, I think the whole American release of BM sounds different. Giant is a good example, you can hear the lead guitar on the original release a lot better than the American one.
