  1. "The Diamond Age" by Neal Stephenson... The Diamond Age or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer is postcyberpunk novel by Neal Stephenson. It is a bildungsroman focused on a young girl and set in a world in which nanotechnology affects all aspects of life. Its primary themes include education, social class, cultural tribalism, and the nature of artificial intelligence. The Diamond Age was first published in 1995 by Bantam Books, as a Bantam Spectra hardcover edition. In 1996, it won the Hugo Award for Best Novel and was shortlisted for the Nebula Award. A six-hour miniseries scripted by Stephenson and produced by George Clooney is being developed for Sci Fi.
  2. Jesus, I'm glad this thread is stickied.
  3. If it's not too much of a pain, I would really appreciate it if "excellent writing" and other such points could be backed up by specific examples.
  4. I don't know why, but Rhett Miller's solo work goes along with Matthew Good for me like peanut butter and jelly. ;)
  5. Haha, nice... I hadn't heard them until recently either, but in March they're coming to a venue I frequent, so I'm currently asking their agent for an opening spot. I'll let you know how it turns out if it happens.
  6. Children of Men. Two thumbs up.

  8. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I think Scrubs is one of the most boring shows on television right now. It's not saying much, because almost everything on television is garbage anyway, in my opinion. The only non-C-SPAN programming I watch is Mr. Show, Arrested Development, Penn & Teller's Bullshit, the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, and The Office Hey, at least half of them haven't been cancelled. If someone would please explain why Scrubs is appealing, or direct me to an explanation that's already been posted, it would be appreciated... all the girls in my life who like the show only say, "J.D. is so cute!" and things like that about it.
  9. I was hoping this thread would be about building colonies underwater by choice, a la the Drummers in The Diamond Age. It would certainly be a boon for population density. Edit: The moment lobsters start singing and playing steel drums, I'm outta there.
  10. I don't mean it as an insult to your intelligence or anything of the sort, but the original post is so narrow minded it makes my head spin. Don't accuse a group of people of being automatons while at the same time implying that they should kowtow to the most fundamental interpretation of whatever religious text they subscribe to. The Christian Bible is only one example, but it's proof enough that human influence plays an integral role in how the religion has developed and branched out into so many different sects. If anyone sees this and is curious about how the Bible has been mistranslated and biased for personal gain, check out "Misquoting Jesus" by Ehrman. Summary: There are more personal beliefs than just the most widely supported ones. Ignorant people will always be ignorant, regardless of faith.
  11. IE7 worked for the downloads. Any other Opera users out there to comment on this?
  12. Feel free to chime in as well, Canadians... I'm sure you all have an opinion on this. ;) My vote personally goes to providing healthcare for children and the poor, as I feel health is a right and not a commodity. However, I think healthcare for all citizens is unwise, economically, as there are lots of people (like myself) who just don't need the assistance. Feel free to blast my opinion out of the water.
  13. I'm attempting IE7 now... I normally use Opera, but when I tried to download songs from the store, an error would occur and the ZIP files would end up being only 15kb and corrupted. Does this have anything to do with my browser choice, or am I experiencing something entirely different? ~ James Tillman
