It's one thing to get on public transit and do that, it's another to plant a number of devices and set them off with a timer instead of a radio device. The targets they've chosen in the past aren't whimsical at all. They have been calculated to have an impact. Bringing down two of the major structures devoted to corporate exploitation, flying a plane into the US' most secure defensive structure, and simultaneously detonating 4 bombs during the busiest part of a London morning is something far more then whimsical. I won't disagree that they are cowards, but you really have to understand that they believe without a shadow of a doubt what they are doing is just. Matt makes mention of it everyday in his blog. Where's the front page news when 30 or 40 people die in an Iraqi car bomb explosion? Where's the front page news when the Americans and Iraqi Security Force go into a place like Fallujah and kill innocent civilians? heyrabbit, you have to understand that al-Qaeda doesn't need to carry out more then a few attacks in the west per year to achieve they're objectives. They aren't thinking of this as a short term war. They're looking generationally with this. Many believe that the goals they seek won't be seen in their lifetime. The attitude in the west is that we can bring an end to terrorism. We never will be able to as long as there is a group of people who feel oppressed and shorted enough to believe that violence is the only solution to effecting change. The twin towers weren't the only area of significance. You're correct in that. It was the one area where they would be able to have maximum exposure. New York is widely regarded as the media capital of the world. Why wouldn't you attack it first? If you really wanted to get your message out, it's the first place you'd hit. And since economic repression is one of the most prevalent forms of repression in the world, why not attack one of the symbols of western prosperity? D

It's amazing to me that there are always some protests, seemingly the large ones, that get out of hand very quickly, yet others seem to remain relatively peaceful. I don't recall a whole lot of violence in March 2003 when 15 million people in numerous countries protested the US' right to wage war pre-emptively. In a large group, there will always be 'troublemakers.' Anarchists are the typical kind, if you had to lump them all in one group, but never underestimate mob mentality. And never underestimate the police's use of force in controlling a large group. When you're dealing with numbers of that size, you can't afford to be picky. Don't get me wrong, I'm a pacifist, I don't believe in the use of force or violence at all, but unfortunately, my views aren't shared by the majority of people. Including my parents, it would seem. D

Gordon Lightfoot was stellar. Missed Floyd if you can believe it. I stopped caring after the showed the Pet Shop Boys in Moscow. I mean, they played in Moscow. They had a song called Go West. Honestly, that took stones. I'm alrady sick of hearing U2 and Sir Paul doing Sgt Peppers. The original is infinitely better. But then again, I'm not a big U2 fan. I actually really like Deep Purple. I heard Green Day on the radio, F bombs and all, and that made me laugh. I saw them in May and it was almost the exact same show. Oh well. Cheers D

Cmon you guys, he put an entire tour behind that EP release. It was the only radio release off of that EP, the tour as I recall was fantastic, I happened to catch the birthday show in Calgary. Musically it was one of the best I've seen, but on a personal level it sucked for other reasons. Anyway, cheers D

Did no one listen to the CKNW interview? He said he believed it would be out somtime in september, with a tour to follow in late september, october, november. As for the content, I was under the impression that the acoustic disc wasn't overdubbed, it was re-recorded with a mic set through a window to catch street noise. And yes, I agree, a lot is being blown out of proportion. I'm looking forward to it as much as the next fan, but I'm not gonna die if I don't have it in september. october maybe, but not september... D

I know a couple strippers. I know a couple teachers. I know a lot of business people. The strippers are by far and away the most down to earth, cool people I know. Aside from the fact that Jenn's post was utter hogwash (ie. Fictional) in the first place, why do you feel the need to bring the negativity here? Sock, how many American troops do you think are in S. Korea? Last I heard, it was in the neighborhood of 50,000. A few stealth bombers aren't going to change the balance of power. Any attack by the US after a N. Korean test would only suit to prove the point I made about the US saying "we can have them, but you aren't allowed." Believe me, if I had more time on my hands, I'd read the news more, I just worry about where the news is coming from. Considering all that has happened with media accuracy in the last few years, I'm loath to trust any of it. Hobo, it's simple to say they would have little use for it given reason x and reason y, but the simple fact is that those trends aren't going to reverse themselves any time soon, certainly not in time to avoid an international energy crisis. Even if China were to step back, I doubt very much the Indians would, and who's to say there wouldn't be someone else stepping up to the plate? I'm not disputing your facts, don't get me wrong, I have a pretty good idea of how much trade exists between the US and China, but if you don't think it would be just one more obstacle on a serious path to war, then you're mistaken. Iraq havning no WMD's and no connection to 9/11 certainly didn't mean anything to anyone in the current administration in the prelude to the second gulf war. D

Ok, first off, you can't go saying that your statement is based in fact, without describing said facts. Second, the Chinese and the Soviets really stopped liking each other somtime in the late 40's early 50's, and if I recall, the Soviet communist system has pretty much ceased to be in the last 15 years or so, so how you can go about calling the Chinese Russia's Communist friends is beyond me. Never say never when it comes to reasons behind warfare. We might not think that China would go to war with the US because of economic issues, but when it comes down to it, all it takes is for there to be a threat. The current American Nuclear Policy essentially states that 'We can have them, but you can't' with 'We' being the US, UK, Russia, France, China, Israel etc. This kind of thinking along with the current projection of conventional force leaves many nations (ie. Iran, N. Korea, et. al.) thinking that their only deterrent to a foreseeable "Allied" offensive is to possess the Great Equalizer. As far as N. Korea testing a weapon, I can't see how the resulting political 'fallout' would be wholly different then when India and Pakistan did the same a few years ago. Granted, given current world pressure, we're likely to see a massive global outcry, and even some sabre rattling, but I can't see anything larger then that. Hobo, you may need to revise your thinking towards the US going to war with China. Right now it doesn't seem like a very credible idea, but if you stop to consider that China is now the second largest consumer of oil, with India close behind, the US is looking at a very real competitor in the world's oil market. I'm gonna stop now before I get too sidetracked... D

I HAD a 50's reissue strat and an 01-02 SG Faded.... Both of been lent to a friend that I haven't talked to in 3 months. So I went out and bought an Ibanez Artcore AF85. Probably the best sounding of the 3. Might get a Tele later in the year, but I need a better amp first. D

Not a chance. Rock was supposed to be in it. The guy that played Eomer in LOTR is the main character. I had heard that they had totally neutered the story from the way the game is. I don't know, I'm waiting to see a trailer before I give it a second thought. Rock is supposed to be in Spy Hunter though. Never played the game, so I don't have a clue what it's about. D

Has anyone read this? I picked it up the other day after watching The Corporation (which is a show that I personally think EVERYONE should see). I read a little bit at Chapters and it seemed interesting, I was just curious to know if anyone had else had bothered to check it out... D

Yeah, it was time, and I really have to say that he is one of the smartest guys on tv. I don't get a chance to see his show a whole lot, but when I get the chance, I don't miss it. I'll have to check that book though... D

Doesn't mean that she should though. I was thinking the same about the Nirvana tune. Quest for knowledge? While at times that can be a laughable notion, I've had a few decent University teachers who I felt actually taught something both interesting and useful. The above posted article (the first one) clearly stated that membership in the Hitler Youth was compulsory by 1941, so really, he wouldn't have had much choice, it was either that, or be beaten. Also, his term of service as an anti-aircraft gunner towards the end of the war. Most people don't realize that a good many of the soldiers towards the end were either a) foreign soldiers forced to fight b ) fanatical SS c) the few members of the Wehrmacht that had managed to survive the grinding pace the Russians and Allies had set or d) forced conscriptee's. My ex's grandmothers brothers were forced into service late in the war, and both died. It haunted her for the rest of her life. I read on msn.ca that there are a good number of more liberal cardinals and higher ups that aren't happy with Ratzinger's election. I personally don't know enough about the man to personally comment, nor do I really care, as I'm not Catholic, and I believe that religion is a seriously flawed construct. I think 10 years is a bit optimistic. I mean, he LOOKS in good health, but who knows, right? insober, I think I read somewhere that there was an analyst (I can't remember who, or where I read the article, although it was VERY recent) that said he didn't believe the church or the world was ready for a black pope. Unfortunately, it's this kind of narrowmindedness that will keep it from happening any time soon as well. D
