Lowering Voting Age To 16?
Monochrome Rainbow replied to ecnarf's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
Is it really that likely that many 16 year olds can be influenced enough by a teacher to register and vote? Anyone that concerned about politics at that age would more or less take the initiative to inform themselves. And to get any sort of strong following from a student you'd basically have to bluntly preach your own opinions. Word will get out, there will be one student in a class at least to speak out against the bias, even if it is not extremely obvious. All lowering the voting age will do is give students that are actually passionate about voting and politics the ability to vote while they are actually learning about the political process and the issues at hand (and in my opinion, probably more informed than many adults that will vote). Some 20 year olds are pretty protected too, and some 18 year olds. I don't even see why we're debating who's more protected anyway, I honestly don't think how independant someone is will influence their vote significantly. You can still educate yourself and understand the issues. If you're gonna register and vote at the age of 16, you'll do that too. I don't need to pay my own rent to decide whether or not the health care system needs more federal funding, or if scrapping the GST is a good idea. Any kid that'll get too excited over saving 3 cents on a bag of doritos to think past the issue at hand won't even register. Honestly, I wouldn't even expect a high turnout in 16 year olds. I don't think anyone does but when you're 18 or 20 or 25 you may be more compelled to take interest in politics because you'll have had more experience with it. And you'll pay more attention to what you learn in school if all of a sudden you have the option to apply that knowledge in a matter that can make a difference in your country, or at the very least allow you to voice your opinions. -
You guys have probably heard these already but whatever, some people might not have. Covers It's some German people. Mostly acoustic. One girl, two guys from what I can tell. Some is decent. Edit: I forgot to mention you click on Goodbanding (lame ass group or performance or whatever the fuck it is, I know). It's easy to navigate from there. Edit #2: Just listened to HTB. With stronger vocals and a better mix this would be decent, I think. It's interesting anyway.

Lowering Voting Age To 16?

I have seen instances of this as well, but it is also illegal to relay your political views as a person in a position of trust in schools. If 16 year olds were to become eligible, this policy would be enforced a bit more strictly as well. And only the kids passionate enough about THEIR beliefs will actually vote anyway, which are mostly the same kids that have matured past their age as well. Besides more kids would be more likely to listen to their parents more than their teachers over who to vote for anwyay. They get political prejudice from their parents long before they can even spell the words. 18 year olds are just as guilty of this as 16 year olds. -
There are two slightly different versions. I have the .mov file on a cd somewhere, as soon as I can find it I'll send it to someone if they want to upload.

say what? The only thing that the Liberals have done that is not fiscally responsible is the Sponsorshop Program and really now that it has surfaced I think there will be a lot more transparency in government and given the relationship between Paul Martin and Jean Chretien (and the fact that it operated mostly through the PMO)I would not be surprised if Martin actually wasn't part of the scandal. The finance minister has a lot of responsibility other than signing cheques and from my undrestanding, he doesn't even have the option to sign unless approved by the treasury board beforehand. He should bear some responsibility for lack of judgement in some areas although I'm not certain he was aware of what he was participating in. Even though it ISN'T the only fiscally irresponsible thing they've done (gun registry?), it is pretty fucking major. Fiscal irresponsibilty is one thing (they already had that covered), outright corruption, money laundering, and embezzlement are quite another. The Liberals have a huge part of the country eating right out their hand, and APPARENTLY it doesn't matter what they do short of throwing babies off cliffs will change their mind. For instance, if any other party had stolen money in this fashion, their support would be almost nonexistent. Liberals are still leading though... it's scary and depressing. And supercanuk, that is so true. Democracy has died and become plutocracy. I will admit although I am in favour of gun registry you are correct in saying that the program itself is infact extremely poorly crafted. There's no debating that and I would be foolish to even try. I stand corrected, it desperately needs to be revamped. I do still believe that the Liberals hold a very good fiscal track record however; their good far outweighs the bad, especially when you look at the last 10 years of economic history around the world. Much worse would certainly be in store under a Conservative or NDP government. The Sponsorsip Scandal is also indeed a HUGE deal, and if it were the same government in power there would be no chance of me voting Liberal or supporting them in any way; it's the biggest scandal in the history Canadian politics. Also, I can't speak on behalf of the rest of the country but I surely would not be voting for any government that has essentially stolen from me. I just don't equate Martin's government with Chretien's, the party had nothing to do with the program. I already explained my reasoning for my beliefs in regards to the Liberal party.

Lowering Voting Age To 16?
Monochrome Rainbow replied to ecnarf's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
I say lower the age. Mostly because they'll only bother to register if they're informed. As far as life experience goes, it's irrelevant. I know people in their 50's, 80's, 20's, you name it who have gone through life without actually listening to a word any politician has said and just have the general, "It doesn't matter, they're all crooks anyway" attitude. If you let them get involved earlier while they're actually learning the electoral process, they may just get out and vote or at least be more inclined to down the road. Writing an eligibility test is tricky, by putting that policy in effect you are essentially denying a right that so many had fought for years and years ago. A right that democracy is basically founded upon. I believe it would also complicate the electoral process further, thus lowering voter turnout. -
No, they don't get along well at the moment and a coalition government is extremely unlikely, I'm well aware of that. All I said was that given the election platforms so far, my ideal government would be an NDP/Liberal coaliton. Also, the NDP are reckless to a degree but not nearly as much as the Conservatives or Greens. And they do have some great ideas, tax credits on hygenic products, energy effiicient appliances and upgrading, fuel efficient cars. Also child care and education are finally getting some attention and results (albeit as miniscule as they are) have been created. At least the NDP are discussing sustaining the environment, homelessness, education, etc. Much like they propped up the Liberals in the last minority, having the NDP working with the Liberals will increase the desperately needed funding to these areas. Would I favour an NDP majority? I'd have to be out of my fucking mind. They're just not prepared for it and they would detroy our economy, which is the Liberal's strength. All I'm saying is that although there are not any long term monetary figures attached to their proposals at the moment, a Liberal/NDP partnership would push the Liberals to allocate more funds to social programming and development. Really with the party leader's in question there's not much more that can be offered to Canadians, which is kinda sad. I just feel it would be the best possible outcome out of the whole election, not much of a chance of it happening by any means though. I think the Liberals have played things very well thus far and wish they could have governed longer because they would have had more of a chance to act, my only problem with them is they don't (Or at least the old liberal government didn't. New one hasn't had much of a chance.) allocate enough funds to social programming. We'll see how it turns out, I can't say I am 100% behind any party.

He should bear some responsibility for lack of judgement in some areas although I'm not certain he was aware of what he was participating in. The Liberals are also the only party addressing what every economist says is our primary economic concern, which is productivity. They also have an excellent budget track record, are paying off the debt and investing socially (although some social expenditures have been flawed). I would like to see a Liberal/NDP coalition because the NDP are very innovative with social programming but reckless with businesses. Conservative are reckless and wastful in terms of taxes, although I do like their plan for small businesses.
