Abortion: What Do You Think?
crazycanuck replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
Abortions for some, tiny American flags for others. -
I could name a vast number of people over the age of 18 who don't know anything about politics. Any argument that 16 years old are too ignorant to vote hinges on people magically becoming informed at the age of eighteen. There are tons of people who vote without the slightest clue as to what's going on. Besides, if you're 16, under-informed and apathatic, you're probably not going to vote anyway.

I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for the guy, but if I have to hear one more thing this week about his legacy and blah blah blah.... -

Has anyone heard "A Night at the Hip-Hopera"? Same deal, Queen mash-ups and all, but 500% better. http://kleptones.com/pages/downloads_hiphopera.html The Kleptones are pretty amazing. -
prequels make my head hurt.

Interesting. But wasn't the TV show created from an original movie? And thus the circle of life completes itself.

Ok. I decree a two-day festival right in the heart of sunny Steveston. It shall be as follows: Day 1 (The current bands) Spoon Ted Leo Blur (w/ Graham Coxon) New Pornographers Sonic Youth Radiohead and a reunited Pavement Day 2 (Where I jump into my time-machine) McLusky Gang of Four (Solid Gold-era) The Fall (circa mid-80s) Joy Division The Smiths Talking Heads -
Backstory: The ten page essay on the counter-reformation in Spain that I thought was due next week is actually due later today, so I've been up all night frantically writing this essay. Around 2 am, I decided to walk to Mac's to invest in some kind of energy drink. I got two cans of Rockstar (which apparently are double servings to begin with). Drank one on the way home which filled me with sugary goodness and energy for the rest of the way until I actually sat down at home and almost crashed right then and there. I immediately drank the second one, then realized the warning label says to only drink one a day. Long story short, I'm very groggy and having a lot of trouble concentrating. The essay is due in 10 hours, and I have three pages left. Wish me luck.

That's kind of a broad question. All of the media has bias, some more than others, and they can go either way. It all depends on the publication/outlet. As a sidebar, there was a recent survey on the political views of journalists, and the vast majority are socially liberal/fiscally conservative.

Coldplay's Xy

You know, saying it's the best since Pinkerton isn't saying much at all. Weezer in the new millenium has been just disappointment after disappointment. But seriously, Make Believe, awesome? Where? Name me one awesome song. The only redeeming factor of that album is maybe "Freak Me Out". -

Everyone loves to call Conor Oberst the "next Dylan", which of course is crap. -
I agree, but it's not like there's any better options out there.

C'mon. Your defence of the album is that for people who aren't very familar with Weezer it's not that bad? -

Parachutes was good, A Rush of Blood was ok, X&Y is the worst album of this year next to Make Believe. Not a good trajectory. -
when you say "they" exactly whom do you speak of? the weather gods obviously.

you don't know who Jay Leno is? The big famous talk show host with the huge chin? Weird. I've never met anyone who didn't know who Leno was. Are you familar with late night talk shows? Leno has one. It's probably the most famous right now, but it really, really sucks. -
I would love to, but doesn't Van have, like no employement opportunities? I've heard it was workig at a call centre or you're unemployed. The call centres are reserved for minorities over the age of 40. Can you make coffee? There's always coffee houses hiring.

I live in Victoria. Victoria is not supposed to have snow. Especially when it's still fall. What the hell is going on here? Where's Global Warming when I need it? I need to catch a ferry tonight, and the buses are probably gonna delayed, and the traffic will be a bitch, and the ferries will probably not leave on time. I normally love snow, but they picked the worst possible day. ;)

umm...Leno. Did you notice him during the clip? -
Charisma has always been an important political factor. It's not so much that you may think you're the best candidate, but you have to make the public think so too. If you can get your ideas across and woo the voters, they're obviously going to support you. It's obviously not as blunt as "I'll vote for this guy cause he talks pretty" so much as "I'll vote for this guy because he seems to know what he's doing and has a clear, articulate plan"
-
Yeah seriously! What the fuck was he thinking?? I think he wants to lose. Just to be clear, most Albertans (at least the ones i know) do not like Harper, but just see him as the lesser evil in this situation. Actually, I think it may have been a smart move by Harper. The main reason the Conservatives lost the election was the Liberal fear-mongering. By going out on day 1 and clearly outlining his plan for same-sex marriage (which isn't necessarily getting rid of it), he's got his official position out there, making it impossible for the Liberals to say Harper will ban same-sex marriage. And, any of the anger/outrage over the free vote will certainly be forgetten come election day. Harper gets same-sex marriage out of the way, and can move on now.

I haven't heard "The Shape of Punk to Come" in years, but goddamn it still packs a punch. The way Protest Song '68 disintegrates into that beautiful melody then just as you get into it, they turn it up to 11 again. I think those Anarchist Swedes were onto something.
