  1. I'll cross that bridge when I get it. But that would be an interesting sociology study. Identify the musical tastes of rapists and see if there's a correlation. I think I just found my sociology thesis.
  2. Yeah, but people need to realize that not everyone likes what everyone else likes. I have no problem with people liking The Mars Volta, I have a problem with those people telling me that if I don't like them I have no taste in music and am a horrible person.
  3. without trying to sound like a prick, it's actually just Elbow, although I'm not that familar with them, but they did have a track on that Help! comp.
  4. Umm..do we really have to drag this into other threads? If you're going to dismiss me for being younger than you, at least act your age.
  5. I never said you did. But to follow up the Something Awful article (which is of course tongue-in-cheek but fun nonetheless), here's the reader response They're really, really angry people. Even worse in person.
  6. I'm actually friends with The Mars Volta. We went to high school together. Good times. And don't get me started on Tool fans. I've had to endure them for far too long.
  7. I would agree with that to an extent, but the reason why the Mars Volta rattles my goat more is the legions of fans proclaiming them to be the next Jesus or something.
  8. Is it Ice Cream? The difference with Sufjan though is that he knows it's all a lark anyway. He's having fun with it. When was the last time The Mars Volta had some fun? (My indie yuppiness is so horribly outnumbered on this board)
  9. Of course they're pretentious because I declare them as such. That's how debates work. ;) And big words and references don't scare me. Here's the tracklisting of Sufjan Stevens; latest, which I absolutely adore. 01 Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, IL 02 The Black Hawk War, or, How to Demolish an Entire Civilization and Still Feel Good About Yourself in the Morning, or, We Apologize for the Inconvenience But You're Going to Have to Leave Now, or, "I have fought the Big Knives and will continue to fight them until they are off our lands!" 03 Come on! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From the Dead!! Ahhhhh! 17 Let's Hear That String Part Again, Because I Don't Think They Heard It All the Way Out in Bushnell 18 In This Temple, as in the Hearts of Man, for Whom He Saved the Earth 19 The Seer's Tower 20 The Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders -Part I: The Great Frontier -Part II: Come to Me Only With Playthings Now 21 Riffs and Variations on a Single Note for Jelly Roll, Earl Hines, Louis Armstrong, Baby Dodds, and the King of Swing, to Name a Few 22 Out of Egypt, into the Great Laugh of Mankind, and I shake the dirt from my sandals as I run I have no problem with big words and allusions in song titles. It just seems that The Mars Volta have to do everything big and epic, and make it seem like they're smarter than you. They're wanks, the type of people that memorize a really complicated solo at home then go to guitar shops and play it there just to show off. If you want big, epic multi-act songs, delve into the world of post-rock instead. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think, Sigur Ros, etc. and I Quite Like This Article EDIT There is no harder song to write than a great three minute pop song. I'm not talking specifically radio friendly, because 2+2=5 bombed as a single, just a song with some great pop hooks.
  10. So The Shins changed your life? ;) no yu begin wher i end, you should really listen to Oh, Inverted World. I'll admit its not as good as Chutes Too Narrow, but it's still pretty great.
  11. There's a difference between pretentious and open-minded. Look at the Mars Volta songs titles. Those are prententious, you can't dispute that. The difference between Mars Volta and Radiohead are that Radiohead can write songs that are under five minutes long, and they catchy pop tunes, as well as epics like Paranoid Android. Look at 2+2=5, there's practically four parts to that song and it still clocks in at under three and a half minutes.
  12. They've delivered two of the decade's best records, so I have high hopes for this one. Any other fans?
  13. Sorry, no flaming, just wanted to know why thisis your opinion. I love discussing music. They seem really overtly Prog for the sake of being Prog. And prententious as well. They don't need five minute guitar solos, but they put them in anyway. And they have some of the worst fans I've ever seen. That and the fact that I'm not a fan of overtly serious, prog-ish rock in the first place.
  14. Well, it's an official Scene release, so it kinda counts. But yeah, it's not really a leak.
  15. And now the second CD has leaked, which is will be nice while I camp out next to my mailbox.
  16. I can't really say he's my favourite anymore. I first got into him back in Grade 8 with Underdogs, and listening to a lot of the same bands mentioned in this thread, but over the years my tastes have changed and although Matt is still up there in the top 10 and dominated my listening for most of high school, I can't seem to get into him as much as I used to. My favourite bands right now are more of the indie persausion like Belle & Sebastian, Spoon, Pavement, Elliot Smith, Modest Mouse, Ted Leo etc.
  17. Yeah, but the allure of a signed copy was too good to pass up.
  18. Has anyone bought this yet? I was unable to find it today.
  19. So, I went to Maple Music's website to track my order and they won't recognize my order #. Is this happening to anyone else? It was there when I checked it just after I ordered.
  20. This could end up killing the CBC, which really sucks. I didn't realize how much I depended on them until they went on strike.
  21. Neil Young - Down By The River
  22. I'm going to be the dissenting opinion here and say that the Mars Volta are a horrible, horrible band. Flame away.
  23. Did you see the pool? They flipped the bitch!
  24. Does anyone have a link to their performance on Conan? I missed it. ;)
