geography of thought - I forget the author

it examines the cognitive differences between the east and west and the possible reasons for it.

for example... individualism arose out of greece because of its hilly topography. it's more conducive to isolated groups.

Being There by Jerzy Kosinski. I saw the movie when I was a kid, and I couldn't wait until I wasn't a kid and would be able to understand it.

A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini

I've been meaning to pick that one up. How is it?

I'm only about 150 or so pages into it, but its good. Its nowhere near as good as The Kite Runner, but then again, I think Kite Runner is one of the best books ever written so....

Yeah, The Kite Runner was pretty damn great, that's why I wanted to read this one.

Reading an American poet called John Ashbery ("Where shall I wander"). Very impressive poetry

Posted

I will have to check that out. I've heard him mentioned a number of times, recently.

He's pretty good, very contemporary poetry... If u like poetry, I recommend it to you (specially this book I'm reading right now, the one i mentioned before)... I love one of his lines:

"I use lexical phrases to make my poetry more democratic" ;)

I like that, I will pick it up this weekend.

What is Poetry

John Ashbery

The medieval town, with frieze

Of boy scouts from Nagoya? The snow

That came when we wanted it to snow?

Beautiful images? Trying to avoid

Ideas, as in this poem? But we

Go back to them as to a wife, leaving

The mistress we desire? Now they

Will have to believe it

As we believed it. In school

All the thought got combed out:

What was left was like a field.

Shut your eyes, and you can feel it for miles around.

Now open them on a thin vertical path.

It might give us--what?--some flowers soon?
