Generally, I get this feeling that it's about drug-abuse ("So low, for how high?"), or just degrading yourself in order to get something you think brings you joy. By that I mean something like having sex with someone you love, but doesn't love you back?

I always assumed it was having no will to live, the whole tone seems to have something to do with that. I love the line "the gun it makes you look nicer in a bad way." although I can't figure it into the song.

Matt wanted to name the song "A Commoner's Guide to Suicide"

that spells the meaning out pretty darn clear

Not particularly authoritative, imho.

Especially since there are a whole bunch of mistakes in the lyrics...how hard can it be to copy it off a booklet? ;)

I'm pretty sure he confirmed this meaning back on one of the old official/non official boards, or maybe it was in his blog.

Bingo. That is exaclty what the song is about. "So low for how high" deals with the fact of is it really worth it becoming famous at the expense of compromising all past and current relationships.
