I know that most people here agree that lyrics should be interpretted personally. I get that. It's just that this one line seems like it has a specific meaning that's flying right over my head.

Well speaking of flags and "out there" ideas, maybe he was referring to Canada becoming independent of England, by losing the blue from their Union Jack flag, leaving red and white for ours.

 

Perhaps he had some really bad poutine from france, and suggests that french canadians should be the ones making it.
