PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) -- The American Nazi Party has volunteered to pick up trash along a quiet stretch of rural road in Oregon state, causing an uproar after getting a sign placed there crediting its work.

 

The issue has flared up in the same week that world leaders and aging survivors gathered in the Polish town of Auschwitz to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the infamous Nazi death camp.

 

"American Nazi Party" is written on the sign, which is part of the "Adopt-A-Road" program that encourages local groups to clean up road litter in exchange for recognition on small signs.

 

The sign, on a quiet stretch of road near Salem, Oregon, also lists the initials "NSM," which stands for the National Socialists Movement, another white supremacist group.

While it disgusts me that there are still people who make it their life's business to spread hate, I don't believe that a group should be shut down, or not allowed a road sign because of their philosophy. If they were killing people or in other ways directly hurting people this would be different. If this group was shut down what would happen to other groups with less popular ideals. Homosexuals would be a prime example from the US right now. Most Americans would agree that homosexuals have no right to marry, but does that mean that they should have the right to marry? It's a silly argument and the thoughts of nazi groups make me think of American History X.

Grow up dude. Don't mean to call you immature but I don't respond well to such intellectually weighty remarks as "stfu".

I didn't even say I objected to the sign being there or them being allowed to clean up the road. I just said that it's controvesial and posted the article.

While I agree that freedom of speech is paramount, remember there are limits that are placed on it. (IE how to build bomb literature, kiddie porn, and oh yeah hate stuff)

 

Personally I have no problem having the visibility of nazies limited. What 6 million people died defeating those basdards. Shall we trivalize thier sacrafice?

First, I don't really have a problem with how-to-build-bombs literature, and I just saw "The Anarchist Cookbook" in a store not to long ago and was even tempted to pick it up. And the only reason kiddie porn should be illegal is because it's causes direct harm to the child. Also, I don't think hate-crime punishment should come into affect until the "haters" are harrassing others. It's your freedom to believe that jews are scum, but if you start harrassing jews and calling them sub-human, you got a hate-crime on your hands.

Millions of Vietnese, Cambodians, and Laoese died due to the Democrat and Republican Party. Shall we limit their freedom of speech too?

Depending on who you choose to count, it could be far, far more. Most people tend to ignore the tens of millions of Russian civilians killed by the Nazis.

5 Million Jews were killed in the Holocaust camps, and one million non-Jews were killed in the camps too. That's what the counting comes from, the camps themselves.

The Russians are ignored because the nazis weren't able to build any camps in Russia, so all the civilians were killed in their own homes, villages, towns, etc... Never seem to hear us complaining about it though.

How many people did Stalin kill in slave camps, ... ? Russians killed a lot of people around the same time too, I don't get why that's so well ignored, I know Stalin was on the allies side in the end in World War II, but still, people should remember both attrocities.

Estimates say around 17 million.

 

Whereas 27 million Russians were killed by the Germans in WW2.

 

You hear plenty of Soviet atrocities if you're in the areas actually affected by them. All over Eastern Europe it's absolute common knowledge.

Stalin took alot longer to kill his people, and it's a tricky thing seperating deaths that are due to Stalin and that are due to famine/conditions.

 

Same should be said for Mao, who by some extreme estimates, killed more than Stalin and Hitler combined.
