Am I The Only One Up For Another Straight Rock Album?

Wrong and maybe right as well. The Colour and the Shape beats anything Nirvana did anyday and is easily Dave's greatest accomplishment. But he did also do most of the drumming on that album according to what I've read (I never used to know that) and I think it shows because it's definitely the standout drum album of the Foo's as well.

 

In Utero and Unplugged in New York are both better than that album, but whatever.

 

Also, I'd say Dave's greatest accomplishment is Songs For The Deaf. That album is fucking incredible and the drumming on "A Song For The Dead" is just insane.

Agree with this.... Dave should remain a drummer, his talent is greater like that. Songs for the Deaf is his best work ever.

 

In Utero is better than anything the Foo Fighters have made.

I beg to differ... Any Foo's album beats Nirvana in my opinions.... I don't know it's just something about the Foo's that gets me. I thought Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace was a great record, my all time fav being In Your Honour though, but then again Nothing Left To Lose and The Colour and The Shape are pretty damn good too.

I heard at the time of Kurt did what he did to himself... he was working on more acoustic material, working with Stipe from REM.

 

I wonder if it's true and that was the direction he wanted to head in?

The Foo's are predictable to me, though. A lot of their stuff sounds exactly the same, especially their singles.

My interest in Nirvana has waned to the point where I hardly ever listen to them anymore, but that Unplugged album is still one of my all time favourites.

The first FF record was essentially Dave Grohl and Greg Dulli writing almost all of it. It's pretty good, but Colour/Shape kind of kicked it out of the water because I think that Grohl was way more focused by that time... not to mention the band was half of Sunny Day Real Estate during that period.. and you can't go wrong when you are repping that kind if a line-up.

That's pretty bad if it's true... Engik's vocals were what made SDRE.

Haha.. guys... I just saw Sunny Day a month ago in both NY and DC. They are fucking beyond amazing. They played just about all of Diary and LP2 in one shot... plus a brand new song with an unreal chorus, oh, and "Guitar And Video Games".

 

Oh, and yes, everything was in D-tuning this time... thank god.

I've been a FF fan for a little while, bought In Your Hono(u)r and thought it was a mistake after a few listens. It's ok now, still don't listen to it much. Similar story for WLRARR, wasn't the biggest fan but Blue Skies drew me in and it gets some rotation on my playlist. Not as much as Avalanche mind you, but more than most other non-MG(B) albums.

 

I get the feeling Vancouver might be the closest thing we get to a straight up rock album for a CD or two. I wouldn't be adverse to the idea Matt mentioned a while back of releasing a few EP's a year of stuff that he just comes up with, I'd be all over it. But hey, what do I know?

I don't like the idea of EP's replacing complete albums in terms of official releases. Radiohead has discussed this as well, I hope they don't go that way. But It'd be great to additionally hear 'ideas' or experiments in this format, like short stories instead of laboured novels. But I mean he's released pretty much an album per year since 2003, I can't ask for more.

 

I have no idea what kind of work he'll release after Vancouver, which is awesome. I could see him going on hiatus for a couple years to be honest, hope he doesn't tho!

i'm thinking there will be a break after Vancouver/touring the album as well. Hope it's not true but i can see it happening.

 

maybe an acoustic/folk style rock album of sorts? i'd love to hear that.

So I gave WLRARR another chance. After listening through a couple of times, I think while it's a great album, it's still my least favourite of Matt's. However, I have really grown fond of We're So Heavy and Empty Road.

Haha.. yeah, I know. However his voice was part of why the whole thing works so well... it's like an edge of a cliff.. with every measure..

I know I would definitely like to see another heavier rock album, something with the same momentum as Alert Status Red, Hello Time Bomb, Load Me Up, Put out Your Lights and Deep Six.
