Recommended Posts

So I need some new music to listen to. I remember getting great recommendations here a few years ago.

Heres my last.fm page http://www.last.fm/user/dgoudie

I would probably list my top 5 artists/bands as:

MG and MGB

bloc party

radiohead

the new pornographers/destroyer

band of horses

Thanks in advanced!

I would recommend Suede (Dog Man Star and Coming Up), Pixies (anything), Depeche Mode (Violator and Music for the Masses), the Dears (No Cities Left), TV on the Radio (Dear Science), and Decemerists(Picaresque).

I am pulling these recommendations out of my ass based on the bands you listed.

Born Ruffians

The Frames

Frightened Rabbit

Great Lake Swimmers

Ra Ra Riot

Said The Whale

Wintersleep

Little more indie then your top five, but have the same idea going on.

Haha. Said The Whale. I totally missed my chance to see Said the Whale when they visited New York. I'm kinda sorta "friends" with the drummer, Spencer (he's been posting on this other message board as me for years), and he told me they were coming...but...I just couldn't make it to the show. I need a physical album of theirs already... But yeah, Said the Whale, good recommendation.

Pixies are also good. Try a band called The Hush Sound if you like catchy poppy indie stuff once in a while.

That sucks man! I was fortunate enough to see them when they stopped in Calgary for Virgin Fest. They put on great live show, electric Ukuleles and all. But yeah I'd recommend picking up Howe Sounds.

I was really impressed that Said the Whale was playing such a big venue. And Matt Good was on the bill with them to boot. Good stuff.

God is an Astronaut (instrumental, climactic ambient music, a la Explosions in the Sky/Mogwai)

Justice (Electric dance)

Portishead (Trip hop)

Bell X1 (Indie rock)

Rilo Kiley (Indie rock)

Wintersleep (rock)

Sondre Lerche (Indie rock/jazz)

Woodhands (electronic/dance)

Wilco (indie rock)

Album Leaf (slow and ambient laptop techno)

My suggestions:

- Sloan

- Great Big Sea (if you're into really, really upbeat stuff, and are open to the idea of listening to Newfoundland folk-rock)

- Barenaked Ladies

- The Stills

- The Trews

- Sam Roberts

- Broken Social Scene (and any thing associated with them)

- Buck 65 (if you're into hip-hop at all)

- Beatles (Yeah, people think their overrated, but look beyond the hype.)

i love Band of Horses!

To discover new music i go to AOL Radio where you can play tons of different types of music for free. I listen to the "Brand New Indie" station and have found countless great new bands i've never heard before. Its gold!!

Alright, I'm hijacking this thread! I've been very much out of the musical loop this past year or so. Yeah, whenever an old favorite released a new album I downloaded it but I haven't really listened to any new bands. So if you'd like, I'd love it if you could recommend some new good artists that you think I'd like.

As for what I listen to lately, I don't have last.fm anymore but it's been a mix of

Bat For Lashes

Explosions In The Sky

Bon Iver

The XX

and various moody (mostly) instrumental movie soundtracks

Here's some bands I'm into, take what you will. All of this stuff is new for 2010.

Thank you Ryan and Tim! I'll check all of those out (I know Minus The Bear, People In Planes and Deerhunter but all the rest I never heard of!)

I don't know if anyone knows Spanish bands, but there are a couple of good indie bands in Spain lately: Vetusta Morla and Zenttric. They sound pretty good, and good voices as well.

Juanpe
